Associated Press tally shows the number of U.S. military deaths in the Iraq campaign has passed 1,000, including 998 U.S. troops and three civilian contractors working for the Pentagon.
The tally includes deaths from hostile and non-hostile causes since President George W. Bush launched the Iraq campaign in March of last year. The 1,000 mark was reached amid a spike in fighting in which 14 U.S. service members died in the past two days. Two were killed Tuesday in Baghdad in fighting with militiamen who support renegade Shiite cleric Muqtada al-Sadr.

Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld told reporters at the Pentagon that in fact, many thousands of Americans have died in the larger war on terrorism -- and that the Iraq war is just a part of it.

The latest fatalities in Iraq followed the deaths of seven Marines killed earlier Monday in a car bombing on the outskirts of Fallujah.

Monday was the deadliest day for U.S. forces in four months. A suicide bomber in Fallujah killed seven U.S. Marines, along with three Iraqi soldiers. :(

How many thousands and thousands of his own people has Sadam killed since the war began?

How many people in the US died in car accidents today? I feel badly for those families of the 1,000 soldiers. However, I think you have to keep the number in perspective and be thankful that the number is not far greater.

I am sure the above responses give great comfort to the families who lost their loved ones.

Padams- Your first sentence is totally absurd. You equate getting killed in combat to a car accident???? Of course the death toll eventually will be far greater, have you heard Bush's exit strategy yet?

All I have to say is that they all Volunteered, not that it makes it any easier on the families, but you join knowning the risk, just as I did when I volunteered and joined the Marines back in 1977, I was 2 weeks out of high school and knew at any time we could be sent off anywhere in the world. Belive me I do feel for the families that are left behind but they joined in beliveing they could make this place a better and safer place to live in. May they all rest in peace now.

That's true...

It's very sad. It always seems that the media profiles widows who just had babies or were pregnant when their husbands died. "The son he will never know..." and so forth. It just makes me sadder when they say stuff like that! :(

How many Americans did he kill?

None! I believe that guy's name was Osama Bin Laden but we don't hear much about him anymore, certainly didn't hear his name mentioned at the Republican convention:rolleyes:

I think comparing soldiers who died fighting on their country's behalf to traffic fatalities is offensive. It was offensive when Limbaugh did it today, too -- also offensive when he compared them to college students who kill themselves each year.

This misadventure was always about war-profiteering and the Neo-con fantasy that the only thing holding back a flourishing democracy in Iraq was Saddam and that after welcoming us as liberators and throwing flowers at our feet they would build voting booths and people in other Middle-eastern countries would see how wonderful things in Iraq were and demand it for themselves. .

Gosh, how's that working out?

Well it appears that some have not noticed, but it's been nothing but a disaster. .

We are not safer; it's caused moderate Muslims who might otherwise give us the benefit of the doubt reason to accept the worst said about us by the bin Laden-types.

World-Wide terrorism is up, not down since the invasion/occupation of Iraq.

Afghanistan has been virtually ignored and now the Taliban is regrouping.

We have alienated the majority of our longtime allies because of Bush's arrogance. At a time when full cooperation and coordination among all nations is the best defense in stopping future attacks.

Every month the violence gets worse. . thousands and thousands of innocent Iraqis die along with the relatively few "insurgents" and terrorists. . terrorists that were invited there by George Bush with his "Bring it on!" bull****.

And now 1,000 American soldiers have died. . and for what? There will never be democracy in that country. The Kurds, Sunnis, and Shia have cultural and religious differences that go back 100's of years and if we leave tomorrow, or next week, or 10 years from now either it will be an all-out civil war; a 17th century Theocracy ran by an Ayatollah; or a ruthless dictatorship just like Saddams except with a different US puppet.

The only entity benefiting is the Haliburtons and big defense contractors and big oil. .

And of course George Bush and his merry band of Neo-cons. . unless the American people wise up and send him back to Crawford this Nov.

Prayers to all who have lost loved-ones in this nightmare and prayers to those who have loved ones still there. . . I support the military by doing whatever I can to get us out of there and bring them home.

It was offensive when Limbaugh did it today, too

You'd think when one is going to be offensive, they could at least be original, huh?

I wonder how it feels to spew out Rush's regurgitated garbage?

Old "El-Rush-hole" is just bitter because they took his Hillbilly Herion away. .

Brave words from the worlds biggest Chickenhawk. . what a piece of human garbage. .
