Hi all!
My sister and I will be in Key West on Mother's Day, and are leaving Mom in Ocala, with my brother! Does anyone know how the cellular reception might be in Key West? I would sure like to make a call to wish her Happy Mother's Day!

fyi - we have US Cellular Service.

Thanks for your help!

I checked US Cellular' site (http://www.uscc.com/uscellular/SilverStream/Pages/r_zip.html?call=2) to see if they had local service in Key West. They don't indicate local service.

I assume then you will be outside of US Cellular local service area, but like all cellular (digital) service you will be roaming and piggy back on another carrier's circuits.

How clear that will be??? I travel all over the country for work, and usually have no trouble on other networks - even in some very remote places (I'm a US Cellular customer too). Clarity also depends upon the make / model of phone you have, and the geography of the land (but your on an island 4' above sea level so that shouldn't be a problem - if so try from the upper decks of the ship).

We had great reception in Key West.
We also got good reception on our western cruise as we headed towards Castaway Cay. The Navigator let's you know when you'll be passing within 50 or so nautical miles of Key West; we were able to get a good signal then too. It was good to have a quick check in with family.

Our service is through Nextel.

We had no problem using our cell phone in all ports on the Western. If you use it in Cozumel or near Mexico, you will have to dial 011(US Country access code) to reach a US connection, or else the recordings will be in Spanish. Reception was also good in all ports.

I used my Verizon cellphone from Deck 4 and called all my friends to tell them where I was with a drink in my hand. It was fun doing and I had no problem with the calls.

Our cabin was on deck 1 and we had no signal in our cabin at Key West, but had a very strong signal in the cabin at Cozumel - go figure. I did not dial out from Cozumel because I did not know what the rates would be.
There are pay phones right outside the ship at Key West and they are located on several of the streets if you decide to use a phone card to call.

Just a quick note. Though my verizon service worked in Key West, I did have to pay roaming charges.
