Typical availability at 7 months...

Kind of off topic, but if you buy re-sale do you get to still book 11 months out at the home resort? I thought it was 7 months period as a re-sale.

Yes, resale buyers also have 11 month booking at their home resort.

Thank all for all the insights. It may be worth the extra money for me to buy at a different resort...
FWIW, we've owned SSR since early 2004 (pre-opening, purchased sight unseen) and use our points generously across the system. We do not want to feel locked into any one location. Sure, we enjoyed SSR's Treehouse units ... but now we want to visit Copper Creek Cabins. We love Aulani and the Grand Cal. DVC's growth, while somewhat slow, is sufficient to give us something new and different every few years ... and we don't feel confined by a "home resort."

I'm in favor of the early advice to buy enough points for a 1BR unit as they are often easier to book than studio units.

Too many things to think about. I thought planning one Disney trip with all the ADRs and fast pass plus was a puzzle, now I don't know what to do. I'll probably try out a resale contract at SSR and see how DVC works for us, and buy more points at a different resort down the road if needed. Thanks for all the options and different ways of thinking about this major investment.

We own at SSR, having bought before the resale restrictions came into being. We have had no problem (other than not enough points) booking throughout the system at the 7 month mark.

Whenever I swap out my BWV days for VGF, I'm happy that I got VGF, but sad that it cost me nearly double the number of points.

Lol, that's how I felt about the Poly. We were happy to be there and loved everything about the resort EXCEPT the point cost per night. It was once and done for us - only because it is too hard to pay that price when I can get a 1B at BWV for just a few points more!

I do want to try the VGF when I can get in, (it will be a studio), but I'm nearly certain I'll feel the same way as I do about the Poly. :)

BLT studios are more reasonable, so that's where we'll be on the rare occasions we feel the need to be near the MK for a few days. Top floor LV studios are our favorite location/view there.

Yep, truth be told, we almost never stay anywhere but the Boardwalk. I say almost never because we once added on a pre-BWV stay night at VWL (I love that resort) and once booked BCV for SAB when the kids were the right age. And our next trip is with a six year old and we are at Kidani. I'm far too frugal to ever want the Poly or VGF (although we usually get a BWV at the Boardwalk - we often have guests and it is a really impressive experience to walk into that view).

And to the OP, that's actually part of the problem - the people who own BCV and BWV in particular - with their expensive resale and limited contract time remaining - tend to stay where they bought - and book eleven months out to ensure that. BLT owners also seem to be fairly loyal to their home resort - at least enough of them are that the value standard view rooms are almost never available seven months out. It isn't that you'll NEVER stay anywhere else, its just that people who spent the money for the Poly aren't lining up to trade into SSR which frees up rooms for the SSR owners to trade into the Poly. So you are counting on owners who don't book (or book late) and owners who want to stay somewhere other than home. It doesn't take long for a BWV owner to get broken of the habit of not making their reservations during the home resort window.
