I hope someone can answer back quick on this!

Anyway, I am going to make tye dye shirts this week. I wanted to know if I should just buy the tye dye kit or can I use any clothing dye(ie:RIT) that I can find?

THANKS!!!!!!

:hippie:

I would buy a kit and also some soda ash to soak the shirts in beforehand. It really makes a difference in the brightness of the colors! Have you seen the big tie dye thread? It has a lot of great advise (although it might take you a day to read it!) ;)

Thanks! Yeah I have read that thread! :lmao:

I was just wondering if regular dye would be better. I think cost-wise a kit is better! Just wanted an opinion!

I bought the kit at Michael's. I'm sure any craft store such as that or Hobby Lobby would have one. I even saw one at my local Wal Mart. The soda ash was in the kit. I've read on the tie dye thread that the Rit dye does not come out as bright and vivid. I've only used the kit so I do not have first hand experience with the Rit dye. I LOVE the way mine came out.

I used both a kit and the rite and I have to say the kit colors came out much better. I used a yellow, royal blue and pink in the rite and didnt like the way the blue over powered all the other colors either. I am just going to buy the kit next time. Also I didnt soak in the soda ash as it didnt come in my kit, said it wasnt needed and there for the rite colors were very faded just after rinsing. Oh well I am going to try again. I guess we all have cute sleep shirts for disney now. :lmao:

Plus another feature of the kits or the Tulip brand dyr is they come with the bottle to use for the dye. Otherwise, you must buy the bottles for the Rit dye. I found ours at Joanns and they have it at walmart too. Good luck...we are doing ours this week too!
