Two ships collided in Cozumel this morning...

I see none of this was posted yet so...

Carnival Legend hit the Carnival Glory in Cozumel around 8:50 am this morning.

Apparently, high winds are the cause of collision.

Based on deck plans, the AFT DINING ROOM of the Carnival Glory was hit.

TBD: Apparently, the Carnival Glory then hit the pier as well.

EDIT: There was apparently 6 passengers injured (minor injuries) during the evacuation. All guests received a 100$ OBC and both ships will be able to sail as they were supposed to.

They say high winds, but the video doesn't appear to show the mobile ship even attempting to change course. Even with high winds, it is the responsibility of the captain to assess if the situation is safe. If they were so high as to not be able to control the ship, perhaps they should not have attempted docking.

The reports I'm seeing on Cruise Critic say one Glory passenger suffered minor injuries while being evacuated from the dining room.

It was bad enough to collide with a sister ship, but if the RC ship had been hit, the course it was on for impact looked very dangerous to me. Could you imagine sitting at breakfast and see another ship coming right for you? I would have been racing out of the area. Yikes.

Exactly. Thankfully someone on the Glory did see the possibility and was evacuating the dining room.

Reports of the ship being on auto-pilot if true are horrible. No way in high wind conditions should it be on autopilot. The captain should be fully in control of the ship in any kind of risky conditions, especially when attempting docking.

Carnival is already trying to mitigate the incident by claiming unusually high winds in the area made maneuvering difficult and that there wasn't enough available tugs to get into the area to assist in time.......usual deflection from the bridge crew's incompetence.

And if the report of autopilot is correct, it's even worse!

If the winds were that bad, perhaps they should have delayed docking until tugs were available - or canceled the port all together. Shouldn't it be safety first?

I agree on both. If that ship was on auto pilot in those conditions, it would be like having your car on cruise control while navigating big city traffic. Of course there is going to be a collision because you can't stop that fast. (if that makes any sense lol)

My comprehension of the process is that they bring people on board who "park" the ships are the pier.

Poor ship handling plain and simple. All on the captain’s shoulders. They may use a harbor pilot but the captain never relinquishes responsibility.

That is the pilot, they are employed by the port and come on board to guide the officers. And I do not think the ship was on auto-pilot. That would be ridiculous. However, some bad judgment calls were made. (high wind or not)

I'm curious what exactly the person steering the boat was trying to do here... That was an odd path to take generally, even if they would've missed both boats. I am guessing something had to have failed to cause this. It was way too close to a catastrophe to be an oops...

Agreed. Mind you, I don't BLAME them given the situation, but I think I heard less swearing in the series finale of Silicon Valley.

I don't know who to blame here. There's probably enough to go around though, but I'd like to find out more on the situation before making any comments beyond the general. I am glad to hear that injuries are minimal. That's a relief.

Aside: could you imagine if the Oasis got heavily damaged twice in 2019 though no fault of their own?

This screen capture from MarineTraffic.com shows the track of GLORY this morning. The track is of a GPS antenna on the top of the bridge (on the ship icons you may notice a small circle near the bow. . .) so think of the icon moving along this line but the ship's heading may not match the way it is pointing ....

IMO the track clearly shows that an approach was being made to the pier then for some reason they began to drift too quickly to the east and tried to abort .... I suspect they were trying to turn around to back in to park when the wind and current grabbed hold.

Since they were this close to the pier a pilot WAS on board. the pilot is an 'advisor' to the captain but in truth 'bridge dynamics' between pilot and captain can be interesting .... there are videos from other vantage points and OASIS was not hit ....



As one who's parked his ship here I'd note that yes the wind is blowing but this area is also know for STRONG currents that can shift in minutes from running southwesterly to running northeasterly especially when there's a stiff wind. Pilot has strongly cautioned about this every time I came in . . .

There is also video of an NCL ship aborting a landing here this am ... nearly running aground and then just leaving ... port call cancelled!
