Two Cruising Rookies Celebrate 15 Years with 4 Nights of MAGIC (Updated 6/6)

I'm here for the fun. Love seeing the differences between the Magic and Dream. Also loving all the details, thanks for sharing :)

Thanks for stopping by! It is fun to see the differences, and I can't wait to check them out for myself in December. I think that I will love the new features on the Dream, but I might miss the smaller crowds and more intimate feel on the Magic. Either way, I will love having the chance to compare them!

Just wanted to pop in and say that I'm really enjoying your TR! Keep it coming! I love your selection of pictures. You managed to choose ones that show things that not everyone shows - like the sports deck! I had to show my kids that one:cool1:!
We're 34 days away and I'm having trouble focusing on what needs to be done - yikes:scared1:!

Thanks! I tried to take pictures of things that I knew my kids would want to see.

Busy weekend, but I will post the next update tomorrow. Thanks for reading!

We woke up on Tuesday morning and could tell that the ship was moving much more slowly. I looked out the window and saw this:

091.jpg

We hadn't planned to do any excursions in Nassau, so we weren't in a huge hurry. I wanted to go walk around the track on Deck 4 (one lap = 1/3 mile), but the deck was wet, and it was closed. I assumed that they had hosed it off and were doing some type of maintenance. We headed to the fitness center instead.

024.jpg

You can't tell from the picture, but the treadmills look over the water. The only problem is that the treadmills make you tall enough so that you don't really have a good view out the windows. My husband had his iPod, so he listened to music while running. I watched the attached television and read the closed captioning because I didn't have any headphones.

After I walked and my husband ran, we went to Topsiders for breakfast.

092.jpg

I'll now tell you one of my only disappointments of the cruise. Because I normally don't eat sugar or gluten, I was REALLY looking forward to the Krispy Kreme donuts on the ship. I love Krispy Kremes. Unfortunately, I love FRESH Krispy Kremes, and the donuts on the ship weren't fresh. For someone who is not used to made-that-day-soft-and-fresh Krispy Kremes, they probably tasted just fine. I had one bite and just didn't want anymore. (I treated myself to two fresh KK's at the airport when we returned.) I'm also not crazy about Disney sausage (it's the same on the ship as it is in WDW). I tasted my DH's pancakes and Mickey waffles, and they were okay. I didn't think the Mickey waffles were as good as they are in the WDW resorts. On the positive side, I did love the biscuits. They were flaky and yummy, and I loved all the fresh fruit, especially the pineapple.

We returned to the room to clean up before heading into Nassau. This was my first visit to a foreign country, so I wanted to walk around a bit. We used a self-guided walking tour (link below).

http://www.brentjes.com/nassau.html

This tour was very descriptive and helpful. Some of the street signs in Nassau were no longer there, so we had to backtrack, but the tour itself was well-designed and very descriptive.

We headed off the ship and through the terminal, and then walked to Parliament Square. There were signs celebrating the Diamond Jubliee of Queen Elizabeth everywhere.

102.jpg

We also saw the library, the Queen's Staircase, the water tower, and Fort Fincastle.

There was more on the tour after this, but we decided to head back to the ship. We were glad we got off and looked around, but an hour and a half was plenty for us. On the way back, we bought my DD a coral necklace and a shell (which she loved), then we got in the long line to exit the terminal and head back to the ships. Apparently, we weren't the only ones who were ready to return--it took us a little while to make it through the ID check in the terminal.

Thoughts on Nassau: I am glad I got off the ship, but when we go in December, we will probably plan to stay on board with the kids. If they want to get off and explore for a little bit, that's fine, but Nassau day is a great opportunity to enjoy the ship with fewer people. I know that Atlantis is probably amazing, but we don't want to spend the money to use the facilities there (we are frugal and feel that the waterpark adventure that our kids would enjoy is priced too high), so we'll enjoy all that Disney has to offer onboard instead.

Coming Up...Back on Board.

Very impressed you went on an exploring adventure, and it looks like you found some pretty neat places.

I'll be going on a 6 day in the spring, so I don't want to read any 7 days and see things I'll have to miss. Your 5 day is great!

Love the pics! And tell your husband that your food pics are doing some good...it's helping me decide what I will order!

So glad they are helpful! My DH liked looking at other people's pictures on the Dis when we were planning, so I told him that we would be helping others! I guess it is kind of weird to take pictures of your food, but I am happy to be weird for the Dis!

After we returned to ship, my DH parked himself in his favorite spot:

112.jpg

He relaxed and watched ESPN for a little while. I went up to the Quiet Cove pool and parked myself here:

113.jpg

I read for about 45 minutes, and then DH came up to meet me for lunch at about 1:30. We went to Topsiders. If I am remembering correctly, this was the second and last time we ate at Topsiders. We decided we enjoyed the other dining room options more. This was my lunch plate:

114.jpg

The fried chicken was AWFUL. I am a southern girl, and this was probably my least favorite fried chicken ever. I'm not sure what the coating was, but it was not good. The meat itself didn't even taste good. I enjoyed the steak with sauteed mushrooms on top (I added the mushrooms to the steak), and the onion ring was good. I should've gotten more of them. My favorite part was the mashed potatoes. I'm not usually crazy about mashed potatoes, but these were fantastic. Loved the cheese in them.

For dessert, my DH got this. I think it was some type of warm banana bread/cobbler type stuff. It was very good.

116.jpg

We also got these:

117.jpg

They were okay (again, not a big fan of Disney cheesecake).

I wanted to stop by the Cove Cafe to see the dessert selection in there. It is next to the Quiet Cove pool, and there is usually a selection of breakfast pastries or desserts (it is also adult only). We got this:

118.jpg

I'm not sure what the white-ish looking dessert was. The others were brownie and chocolate cake. The only downside to these desserts was that they were kept in a refrigerated case, so they were hard because they were cold. They would have tasted much better if we had let them get to room temperature before eating, but we weren't that patient.

After lunch, we decided to go see a movie. On the way, we ran into Pluto. You may not be able to tell, but this picture turned out blurry. I was sad about this because my DH rarely acts goofy (outside of interacting with his kids). It was fun for him to go a little crazy with a character! :)

120.jpg

We headed to the Buena Vista Theater for John Carter.

121.jpg

My DH enjoys watching movies, so it was fun to have a theater on the ship. The movie, however, was so bad it was funny. It was just corny. We laughed about it, but I'm glad I didn't pay to see it in the theater! A tip--DON'T SIT ON THE BACK ROW! I had read this on the boards, but I didn't remember until the movie started. The leg room on the back row is nonexistent. All the other rows have much more space. We did not make this mistake again! I'm not sure if it is the same way on all the ships, but don't sit on the back row on the Magic.

Coming Up--Villains Tonight and Parrot Cay

Thanks for writing your TR. If we go I am sure we will take our DD. She just turned 3, so I am guessing we'll wait another year or two so she can really enjoy all the kids clubs and shows. My DH and I went on a trip to NYC without her last summer and I wasn't as ready to be away from her as I thought. It's nice to get a Mom's perspective. I hope you write another after you go on your cruise with kids :)

I am rarely away from my kids, and it is hard for me to travel without them (my DH travels a lot so he's used to it), but I will say that it has gotten easier as they have gotten older. They were so excited to be with their grandparents, so that made it easier for me to leave, and they are old enough that they can take care of some things and help their grandparents with routines and stuff. BUT, as much fun as we had, it was so nice to return home to them!

I do plan to write another trip report. I have written about WDW trips in detail on my personal blog before, but I'm going to write them here from now on. My in-real-life friends don't appreciate the Disney details like the hard-core folks on the Disboards! :)

Thanks for reading!

Same with us! I travel a lot, but DW is a stay at home Mom. We also had Grandparents help us and that really helped us know they would be fine.

Feel free to chime in with any of your experiences on the cruise. Are you writing a trip report? I would love to see the similarities and differences!

Honestly didn't want to hijack your report with too many details of ours. It might be a good idea to do my own trip report. It would be my first! I am gathering photos and working the outline.

There are a lot of similarities.. we also were late dining with APPL... DW didn't have the best first night as the Bonine hadn't kicked in yet. You made the right choice by starting that early!

We wondered about how the movement affected others. We had never been on a cruise before, so we weren't sure what was normal. Our assistant server, however, said it was moving a lot, so we figured she knew. Sorry your wife had a rough evening!

Be sure to post your link here if you do write a report. I'd love to read it!

After John Carter, we went back to our cabin to dress for dinner and the show. My DH wanted to grab a snack before the show, so we went up to Deck 9. Apparently, someone had pooped in the Mickey pool because it was roped off, empty, and they were draining the water.

122.jpg

DH grabbed a burger at Pluto's Dog House. It was a typical counter service burger, but the fries were good.

124.jpg

We headed to the Walt Disney Theater to see Villains Tonight. I liked the humor in this show, and I was pleasantly surprised that my DH enjoyed the show as well (he's not a musical theater fan). I didn't think we were allowed to take pictures during the show, but based on other trip reports, I think that you can take pictures without a flash. This is the only picture I snapped (before the performance).

125.jpg

After the show, we browsed around the shops and then went to the atrium for a picture (it was dress-up night). I told my DH that I didn't care if he wore a tie, so he was content with a polo and dress pants. Some dressed up more, but some people were VERY casual at all the dinners. I am such a rule follower that I was surprised by men wearing sleeveless shirts and shorts in the main dining room. Of course, that didn't affect my vacation at all, but I was still surprised.

126.jpg

In both the Passporter book and on the Dis, I had read that dinner in Parrot Cay was not a favorite, but my DH and I LOVED our dinner there. The bread came first. There were some plain dinner rolls and some banana bread. My DH really liked the banana bread. It came with banana butter that was yummy.

128-1.jpg

For appetizers, DH ordered the Jamacain Marinated Chicken Tenderloins in a Sizzling Spicy Jerk Sauce with a Chunky Bleu Cheese Dressing, and I ordered the Baked Crab Dip Martinique: Jumbo Lump Crab Baked in Creamy Cheese Sauce Served with Colorful Tortilla and Plantain Chips. We both really liked our appetizers. The plantain chips that came with my dip were very good. We ate every bite of these starters!

129.jpg

130.jpg

For our second course, DH ordered the Cream of Green Asparagus with Crabmeat and Asparagus (no picture), and I had the West Indies Romaine Salad: Fresh Crisp Romaine tossed with a Creamy Romano Dressing topped with West Indies spice Dusted Croutons. DH loved the soup, and my salad was fine.

131.jpg

For the main course, I had the Island Spiced Grilled Rib-Eye of Beef Topped with Handmade Spiced Butter, Corn on the Cob and Double–baked Potato. The corn and potato were okay, but the rib-eye was the best entree I had all week. It was seasoned wonderfully and cooked perfectly. Delicious!

132.jpg

I think my DH had the Mixed Grill: Grilled Beef Tenderloin Steak, Lamb Chop, Bacon Wrapped Sausage and Jumbo Shrimp on Mashed Potatoes, Asparagus and Grilled Tomato with a Cabernet Mushroom Sauce, but I don't have a picture. He liked his as well, but he also thought my rib-eye was exceptional.

For dessert, we ordered the Crème Brûlée Cheesecake, the Ice Cream Sundae (cookies and cream ice cream, served with a fudge brownie bar, whipped cream and chocolate sauce), and the Parrot Cay`s Sweet Temptations: A Trio of Crème Brûlée Cheesecake, Lemon Meringue Pie and Chocolate S`More Vanilla Cake. I liked this cheesecake's flavor and consistency better than any other cheesecake I had on the ship, but there was something about the flavor of the crust that I wasn't crazy about. The sundae was standard, but yummy. I don't like soft-serve ice cream (which is all-you-can-eat and self-serve on deck 9), so I was glad to get a little bit of hand-scooped ice cream.

133.jpg

134.jpg

135.jpg

We left this dinner full and happy! This was one of our favorite meals of the week.

The ship stayed in port at Nassau until 2AM. I think many people took advantage of this and stayed off the ship until late, but we were exhausted. We walked around outside on deck 4 for a little while, and then we returned to our room.

136.jpg

Because we had felt the ship moving so much the night before, we thought we would wake at 2 when the shipped pulled out, but we slept right through it!

Coming Up...Castaway Cay!

I didn't think we were allowed to take pictures during the show, but based on other trip reports, I think that you can take pictures without a flash.

From what I saw during the shows, I got the impression that they don't want you taking any photos, period. We sat on the aisles and I saw several CM's "patrolling" looking for guests with cameras. You could tell because the only guests they actually seemed to talk to were ones that obviously had cameras because you could see the glow from the LCD screens. I was amazed how vigilant they seemed to be about this.

What did you think of the service on the Parrot Cay night? I thought it was a bit rushed... I associated it with the fact that we were staying in port until 2AM so the crew could get some extra shore leave and since we had late dining it seems like they wanted to get the heck out of there.

I didn't even think about it at the time, but that was our fastest meal of the cruise, so you're probably right. Our servers were just as friendly that night, so I didn't feel rushed, but I did notice that we got out of there earlier than we had the night before.

I've always thought that no photos or videos of any kind are allowed in Broadway-type productions because of licensing agreements, but I do remember them saying no flash photography. Either way, I'll keep my camera put up during the shows. I certainly don't want to be called out on it, and it's nice to enjoy the show without looking at it through a lens!

We woke up on Castaway Cay day, and decided to try breakfast at Lumiere's. We liked this better than Topsiders, but generally speaking, breakfast was my least favorite meal during the cruise. I thought the pancakes and waffles were so-so in all the restaurants (and I've already mentioned my disappointment in the not-so-fresh Krispy Kremes). We were excited to find that our serving team was working in Lumiere's that morning, and we were seated in their section.

I got a croissant from the bread selection that was offered. It was quite good. I ordered something that included bacon, french toast, pancakes, and waffles. I got pineapple on the side. The french toast had the best flavor out of everything on my plate, but since I'm not a huge fan of french toast (it's too mushy for my tastes), I didn't eat that much of it. If you like french toast, they had something on the menu that was a french toast/pineapple combination. It looked very good.

137.jpg

After breakfast, we went back to the room to wait for permission to leave the ship. We must have missed the announcement because we saw people walking past our window, so we headed out. It was a beautiful day. We were told that most days prior to our cruise had been rainy, so we were thankful to have such wonderful weather at Castaway Cay.

138.jpg

We walked to the family beach, stopping to browse in the gift shop and to take pictures to show the kids.

144.jpg

145.jpg

147.jpg

Then, we hopped on a tram to Serenity Bay. We spent the morning moving from chairs to hammocks and back to chairs. It was WONDERFUL.

156.jpg

157.jpg

152.jpg

155.jpg

154.jpg

We went back to the family beach area for lunch. Before eating, we watched a crab race. This was cute, and something our kids would enjoy. The crabs are numbered, and families are assigned to each crab. They have heats, and then the fastest crabs participate in a final race.

164.jpg

For lunch, we headed to Cookies. We got some fruit, some salad (the fruit and salad stations are separate from the rest of the food), burgers, and desserts. The cookies were yummy. There is also a soft-serve ice cream machine. On the ship, the soft-serve is chocolate and vanilla. On Castaway, they also had a machine that served strawberry and banana. I'm not a big fan of soft-serve, but I thought the strawberry was good.

172.jpg

174.jpg

173.jpg

We went back to the family beach for some more relaxation. I wanted to spend every possible moment reading and enjoying the sunshine. One of the nice things about being on the Magic is that there was plenty of room at Castaway Cay. We could always find an empty chair or hammock. It will be interesting to see how different it is when we sail on the Dream.

166.jpg

175.jpg

At about 1:00, my DH headed back to work out in the fitness center. Then, he went back to the cabin to watch ESPN and nap. At 3:45, I left my spot in paradise, and slowly headed back to get ready for the show and dinner.

183.jpg

184.jpg

190.jpg

My only regrets: I wanted to do the Castaway Cay 5K so badly, but I didn't get to. I started running a little over 2 years ago, and I even ran the Disney Princess Half-Marathon in 2011. Shortly after that race, I got a bulging disc in my back, and I haven't been able to run. I am just now starting to test the waters with some running again, so I hope I will be able to do the CC 5K when we sail in December. It would have been much easier to do on the trip without kids, but I'll just have to leave the kids with DH!

The only other thing I wanted to do at Castaway Cay was parasailing, but I couldn't talk my DH into doing it with me. I love him for being the stable, steady-as-a-rock, non-risk taker, but these character traits become frustrating when I am trying to get him to do something like parasailing! :) My 7yo DD, however, is ready and willing to do it with me in December, so this is on the agenda for next time!

Up next...Pirate Night
