Two Aussie first-timers in Disney! Lots of photos! NEW- FINAL CHAPTER! - Ch 20, Pg 30

I am sorry that your day got off to a bad start. My boyfriend is not a morning person, but I am so I have told him I am dragging his butt out of bed every morning to get to the parks for open. Poor thing ;) but I have told him he can have a rest in the afternoon. We are planning a rest day in the middle so we can relax, just hang by the pool and check out other resorts. We don't want to get totally exhausted so we don't have any fun. Saying that though I have never been to WDW and I am probably going to get overwhelmed no matter how much I plan :woohoo: .

Hello all!

NMAmy... You made me feel a bit better about having a sad day at Disney, thankyou! It's kinda nice to know that it happens to other people too! Well not nice, but you know! :)

Glendamax... I love your comment about there being heaters in the trees at Animal Kingdom!! That's definitely what it felt like!! :lmao:

edaymond... Ooh, you have an Australian Terrier!? I don't even know what that is! :rolleyes1 I'm a cat person, sorry!! But yes, it was torture leaving our cat behind for 7 weeks! She stayed with my brother while we were gone, and she fell in love with him and was completely happy, but we just missed her so much!! She's definitely our "baby"!!

REL1203... Thanks for popping into my trip report! Glad you're enjoying it!!

Lawyergirl... Yay! I love food porn!! :thumbsup2 Except while we were at Raglan Road, I so wanted to try the Raspberry Riot that you guys had, but they were all out of it that night! Booo! And don't worry, I'll definitely write about the Canada part of our trip, including our engagement story!! :yay:

Marion... Ahhh, your posts always make me giggle!! :goodvibes I believe you about the jumping spiders, but seriously, I've never seen one!! Don't let it put you off coming to Australia, because I think you'd have to be really, really unlucky to have one jump on you!! It's like saying I wouldn't go to America because I might run into a coyote! Hee! I am, however, with you on the bug thing. Bugs are evil!!

And to answer your question, I think I definitely would have enjoyed Animal Kingdom more if it weren't so crowded, or hot, and if we had have been there at park opening. Definitely!! I was cranky before we got there really, and the heat and the crowds just made things worse!! Doh! :headache:

Your grand-daughter, by the way, is so cute!!!

Sue88... Ohh, don't listen to Marion about those jumping spiders!! ;) America has Britney Spears, but we still went! Hee! You're right about Animal Kingdom not being so fun when there's lots of people - it just seems squashy!!

Marjol... You saw a jumping spider!? Eeek! Did it jump high? How big was it? Did it jump near you? Ew! We didn't want to have grumpy, "I don't want to get out of bed" day either, but we did! Booo! Looking back, I wish we had have just stayed in bed and got up when we were ready, but I had plans, and we were stickin' to them!! Next time, I'd definitely schedule in some sleep-in days and some days to just relax around the hotel. Oh well!!

lisaj... Hee! That's a funny story about you getting saturated on River Rapids!! I guess it does depend where you're sitting. We were actually sitting opposite a, ahem, really really large lady, who took up two seats. So maybe she got all the splashes, and we stayed dry!! Heh! I shouldn't laugh.

School has gone really well so far - thanks for asking!! The kids are refreshed and happy to be back at school, and just as lovely as they were before the holiday break! Although it's only Tuesday, and I'm already tired!! You forget how much teaching wears you out!! Good luck with your return on Wednesday!! :thumbsup2

Boston5602... Hiya! Thanks for popping into my trip report!! And no, you won't have to wait too long for the next chapter, don't worry!! :woohoo: Now hmmm, the Crocs!! I haven't mentioned them in my trip report so far, but I will now, since you asked!! DF LOVED his crocs!! He wore them ALL the time, throughout our whole trip! He liked the look of them, as well as finding them just so comfy! He still wears them all the time! So yep, he'd definitely wear them back to Disney! On the other hand, I had some too, but I didn't like mine much! I think they were too small, because they kept rubbing and giving me blisters! But, my feet slid around in them, like they were too big! I tried and tried, but they just hurt all the time, so I eventually gave up and wore my flip-flops instead! So really, I think it depends on your feet and if they fit you properly. Definitely give them a go though! Hope that answers your question, in a round-a-bout way!!

QuirkyButterfly... Your plan for having a relax day in the middle of your Disney trip sounds perfect!! I so wish we had have done that. Next time, we'll definitely allow for more sleep-ins, and more naps, and more swims, and more lazy time enjoying the hotel! It is a holiday, after all! I'm still glad we saw everything we wanted to though, but some quiet time is definitely the way to go, to make everything more enjoyable! :thumbsup2

Thanks so much for all your nice comments, everybody!! I hope to have the next installment up by this time tomorrow! :cool1:

I'm so glad you came to the states even with the horrible threat of Brittney Spears being on the same continent! :lmao: :rotfl: :lmao:

Don't forget to duck if you do see a spider jumping at you! OR if you see Brittany Spears jumping at you!!!! :duck:

Thanks for all of your personal answers to our posts! It is so nice to chat with you! :hyper2:

Sometimes, you just have to sleep in!

I scheduled a guilt-free sleep-in morning last trip and it was :cloud9:

Can't wait for more...

Kathy

Haha! I just had to chuckle while I was reading your Animal Kingdom day - those mornings definitely happen, with or without homesickness on top of it all!! Not to mention the heat at Animal Kingdom! Sorry to hear the morning was rocky, but sounds like things improved over the course of the day.

Oh, and coincidentally, I've been looking at the "food porn" thread (I think the "food porn" label is genius, whoever came up with it!) and I've seen several postings by you from before your trip. It's so funny to think that now you're the one with the pictures to help other people decide! I think your Tusker House posting here has definitely put me over the edge and we'll have to eat our lunch there when we go in August. It looks quite tasty! Also, do you have a link to your dining review? I'd love to take a look at that too!

Can't wait to keep reading! :yay:

I am loving your report, 7 week holiday i am so jealous.
I go in 11 days just to make you feel jealous back. :cool1:

Please Please Pretty Please Update. I really want to know what happend next :yay:

I have one question you went in september and everyone complains how hot it is there. How did you find it, is it Australian hot or worse because of the humidity.

Oh noooo! I'm so sorry everybody! I know I said I'd have the next chapter up yesterday, but I'm just very bad and haven't finished it yet!! :confused3

I promise this won't turn into one of those trip reports that gets dragged out forever and ever! I get cross when that happens!

I'm definitely still here, and to make it up to you, I'm going to post at least 2 chapters over the weekend! And if I don't, you can all throw rotten tomatoes at me via the web! Okay? Yay!!

To be honest... I've forgotten how busy school is!! I leave home at 7.30am and don't get home until 6pm, and then I have dinner, relax for a bit, then shower and go to bed! Terrible!! Where's my life gone?! Wah!! But anyway, I'm sure I'll get used to it again soon. Plus, only 1 more day til the weekend! Yahoooo!

Sue88... Thanks for the advice! I'll definitely keep an eye out for jumping Britney's next time we're in the US!! Heee!

KathyRN137... Ohhh, next time I'm definitely scheduling a guilt-free sleep-in at Disney!! Or maybe even 3! Sounds great!!

Disneymooner07... Oh no, how embarrassing! You read my silly questions on the food porn thread, like, "What does family style mean?!" Duuh me!! But you're right - it's nice to be able to help people now!! Not that I'm an expert by any means! Here's the link to my dining review...
http://www.disboards.com/showthread.php?t=1245844
Hope that works!!

luciloo... Ohhh, you go to Disney in 11 days!? That's so exciting! I'm definitely jealous!! Hope you have a fantastic time!! :woohoo:

A fat english gent... Hi! You're right - it was a great holiday! Umm... jolly!! ;)

QuirkyButterfly... Eeek, sorry! I will definitely write some more chapters on the weekend!! In regards to your question about the weather at Disney World, it reminded me a lot of Brisbane weather! I don't know if that helps you... But yeah, it was really, really, really steamy. Not a nice heat. I can handle dry Australian heat (to a point!), but Orlando is a whole different thing. It's incredibly steamy, but then the sun is amazingly strong too. Definitely slip, slop, slap that sunscreen on!! Especially that Animal Kingdom day, it was SO humid and yucky. We were sticky and sweaty and gross all day. When we first arrived in Orlando, I remember saying, "Augh! I can't breathe!" It really does engulf you! Hehee. That being said, the air-conditioning in our hotel was AMAZING, the buses are all beautifully air-conditionined, every attraction everywhere is air-conditioned, so there are always heaps of places to escape! And it's all worth it anyway - it's Disney!! :yay:

Anyway, I'll be back very soon with the new chapter, everybody! I'm so sorry for keeping you waiting! Thankyou all so much for sticking with me!! Stay tuned!! :thumbsup2

Florida CAN be very steamy! But, depending on the time of year, the weather can be absolutely great! My sister lives near cape canaveral ( or port canaveral if you are a disney cruiser!) and I have gone to visit her on all different months of the year. I have gone in July and September when it has been VERY hot and steamy. I have gone in November and found the weather to be wonderful. I have had some good weather in the spring but it does seem to rain more regularly in April-May.

Staying Tuned for more Trippie Report!:goodvibes

AussieAngel thank you for answering about the croc's. I guess you love or hatem and I just don't want to spend the money to hate them.

Will be waiting patiently for the next installment

Our hometown was Satellite Beach (just south of the Cape). I can't agree with you more on the weather. We always plan our Disney trips in Oct-Feb (but not Christmas--crowded!) . The humidity even keeps us former Floridians away.

Wait for the next installment:cool1: .

Chapter 12... Animal Kingdom continued!

After our yummy lunch at Tusker House, we both perked up a bit, and were ready to explore some more of Animal Kingdom! It was our Fastpass return time for Expedition Everest, so we made our way there again, only to discover it was still out of action! Boooo! :sad2: It hadn’t been working all morning apparently, and showed no signs of starting up again soon.

Instead, we took a photo and headed towards Dinoland. Ah, well. I’m sure we would have loved Expedition Everest, but just not on this trip! It gives us something new to do next time!

IMG_0597.jpg

Dinoland kinda reminded me of a cheesy 80’s carnival… which isn’t necessarily a bad thing! It was actually much quieter there than anywhere else in the park, which was nice, so we hung out there for a little while.

First we had a ride on Primeval Whirl, which we thought would be a fun little quiet ride after lunch. But actually… YOWZA!!! Primeval Whirl HURTS!! :scared1: There was just the two of us in the little pod thing, so every time we turned a corner, we both went “Bang!” into the edge of the seat and jarred our shoulders. And went we went the other way, we both went “Bang!” into each other. That ride is seriously jerky and rough!! By the 12th time my shoulder banged into the edge, we were both saying, “OW!! I want to get off!” I know, I know, we’re big wimps, but we so weren’t expecting it to hurt!! Ouch!! :headache:

After limping off Primeval Whirl, we hobbled over to Dinosaur. We waited for about 5 minutes, then jumped on. We both enjoyed Dinosaur, but if I was a kid, I would have been peeing my pants. That big dinosaur is scary, and it’s really dark in there!

We went for a little wander after that, and bought a DELICIOUS frozen banana on the way from one of the little carts around the park. When the CM picked up on our Australian accents, she said, “Oh, I’m sorry to hear about Steve Irwin.” (He had just died the week before) We looked at each other, shrugged, and said, “Hmm, I think Americans liked him more than we did!” to which she replied, “Yeah. Even we didn’t like him that much though.” Hehheheheee. That little exhange just makes me chuckle. There’s amusing things in there about being so polite about other cultures, when really, we all just think the same way. (And I know, some people adored Steve Irwin, and each to their own! But you know what I mean!) :)

Munching on our fabulous frozen bananas while walking through the park, we came across this tree lady… I can’t remember her name now! Whoops! What is it again? Anyway, here she is. For now, we shall just call her Tree Lady…

IMG_0580.jpg

Next up was It’s Tough to be a Bug. DF loooved this movie, and yes, it was quite cute, but I’m a bit paranoid about bugs. I spent the whole time lifting up my legs, because I knew at some stage they would gush out cold air onto your legs and pretend it was bugs, and I knew I would freak out completely when that happened. Heeee. So when everyone else screamed and jumped around in their seats because bugs were touching their legs, I just chuckled quietly to myself and kept my legs up. I think we’d been to too many 3D movies at that stage! It was fun though, and so nice and cool in there! :thumbsup2

Here’s the Tree of Life…

IMG_0578.jpg

By that stage, it was around 2.30, and the park was getting ridiculously crowded and painfully hot. We decided to call it a day and head back to Pop for a relax. I think this was the first day for us that the heat and the sweaty crowds just outweighed the fun. :guilty: Never mind – we still got to see most of the things we wanted to, except for Expedition Everest of course. Ahhh, well. Maybe next time!!

Back at Pop, we refilled our mugs with frozen coke, bought some more cheese popcorn, and watched a SuperNanny marathon on tv! Well, I watched SuperNanny while DF slept. I don’t really know why I chose to watch SuperNanny instead of having a sleep, but I think I was just so happy to be back in our quiet little hotel room with the air-conditioning and the cheese popcorn! What more could one ask for!?

At around 5.30, I woke DF… it was time to get ready for our ADR at Spoodles! We were both looking forward to this meal. We chose it by looking at the AllEars menu, and thinking it looked great – but then, so many people on the DIS boards said the food was awful! We were interested to check it out, anyway. :woohoo:

We caught a bus to MGM, then a boat to the Boardwalk, which is just beautiful! We had a little bit of time to explore the hotel and the boardwalk itself, which we loved. It was just like the fair in Big! Very cute! Anyhoo, our ADR was for 7pm. We were seated straight away, and enjoyed one of the best meals of our trip!!

I had the Mediterranean Dips for an appetizer, which were huge and delicious, followed by the Fettuccine Alfredo, then an orange cheesecake thingy for dessert.

DF chose the Garlic Shrimp for his appetizer, the New York strip as his main, and the Make Your Own Sundae for dessert.

The food was all fresh and tasty, the service was excellent, and the whole restaurant had a very relaxed and cruisey vibe! Our total for this meal came to $102 – we still couldn’t get over the fact that it was actually free!! Yayyyyy! :cool1:

Here I am looking very relaxed about to board the boat at the Boardwalk…

IMG_0609.jpg

It was turning out to be a lovely night! We both love eating out at nice restaurants, and looking back, I think some of our favourite times at Disney were at the restaurants! After all the hectic pace of the parks, it was so nice to be able to explore other hotels, then sit down and enjoy a fantastic meal to finish off the day. We’d definitely do the dining plan again next time – free or otherwise! :thumbsup2

Back at Pop, we decided to do some washing in the coin laundry. Not very glamorous, I know! But since we were away for 7 weeks, coin laundries were our best friend. While our clothes were in the wash, we went for a swim. Nice!! I love night-time swims.

If you happened to be at Pop Century on the 10th September last year, you would have seen a guy and a girl trying to do “The Lift” from Dirty Dancing in the pool. You know, that dance move when Patrick Swayze lifts up Jennifer Grey straight above his head? Well… that may or may not have been us in the pool that night. Okay, it was. And we nearly got there!! Well, not really. Can anyone else in the world do that except Patrick Swayze and Jennifer Grey? Nup.

I love Dirty Dancing. :cloud9:

We eventually had to get out of the pool, because we were scaring the young children, and also because our washing was ready to put in the dryer. While putting it in the dryer, DF made a friend. A really big, tough, bikie dude who was holidaying at Disney with his family. Heh. He was actually really nice, and started off the conversation by saying to DF, “I saw you playing in the pool with your missus.” Heeee. How embarrassing. :rolleyes1

DF ended up chatting to the huge biker dude for over 45 minutes in the laundry, while I went back to our room, showered, and watched some tv before bedtime. And ate some more cheese popcorn, of course. popcorn:: Apparently the biker dude knew a lot about mining in Australia, and taught DF all about it!!

So, that was pretty much our day! It seems wrong that we had so much more fun resting at Pop, eating dinner, swimming in the pool, and making friends with a biker, than we did at Animal Kingdom. But it’s true!! I think sometimes the best things at Disney World (and indeed, the rest of the world...) are the unexpected things, and I will definitely remember that for next time! I will remember to take time out, and to do silly things, and to enjoy the little moments, instead of trying to do all the things you think you should enjoy!

Philosophical moment, over. :yay:

Next up… Our last day at Disney World – AUGH!! Blizzard Beach, here we come!

Another great report, like the look of the food at Spoodles (I also loved the menu at allears but it has been vetoed by the rest of the family!) Looking forward to hearing about Blizzard Beach. We need to go there on our first week in October as I believe it will be shut when we return in November.

*sigh* Where are those photo pass people when you really need them!! :rotfl: I love the story of your DF and the biker bonding over their laundry. Sounds like a pretty decent day despite the heat, and I truly love all your photos. Except maybe the food porn this early in the morning. I'm not a food person til closer to noon.... I'll look at those later :surfweb:

I'm sad we're nearing the end. You have to go back.

:thumbsup2 I love the food pictures! Makes me very hungry! Oh no, only one more day?! You will have to go back to wdw so you can write another trip report ;)

Hey everybody!

Guess what - I've got tonsilitis again! Whaaat!? Sometimes I can go a year without getting it at all, but I had it 4 weeks ago, and now I've got it again! Apparently my tonsils don't like it when I'm busy. They're my body's way of saying, "Slow down!" So I'm back on anti-biotics and back to sleeping a lot and resting my tonsils! Perfect for playing on the DIS boards - not so perfect for teaching! Lucky it's the weekend though - I can relax, and I should be okay by Monday. Silly tonsils! :confused3

lisaj... Why is Spoodles vetoed by your family? That's no good! It really is delicious! I think one day people will start to realise how good it actually is, and it will become the new Le Cellier, or the new Kona Cafe! :thumbsup2

Marion... Ha! I'm so glad the photopass person wasn't there when we were doing the lift! Funny idea though!! Glad you like the photos!!

tashas mum... Hahaa! I watched that YouTube clip! I have no idea who those guys are, but it made me laugh! He really did get those Jennifer Grey moves down perfectly! But don't they know...? "The best place to practice lifts, is in the water." Heee! Thanks for the clip! :lmao:

tazz23... Glad you like the food photos!! And yep, I definitely do need to go back to WDW! I know... how about if you pay, then I can write my report? Yahoo!!! Thanks!! :yay:

Thanks everybody for sticking around! As promised, I'm going to have another chapter up tomorrow! :surfweb:
