Well he does continually (through the books) warn her about what he could do, and why she should be afraid of him, so even if he can completely control himself, that is threatening her which is not okay with me.

I feel like he should have trusted Bella to make her own decisions, and make her own mistakes but he doesn't let her.

Yeah I think it's good that he came around, especially because of Jacob and Renesme.

He did it because he wanted her to leave him. He knew she'd be better off that way, but she was too stupid and it didn't work. He was never really threatening her.

The thing is he's terrified she'll be killed, in any way. Having no control over protecting her scared him to death which is why he wouldn't let her go at first. He got over that in the end though.
