Why...ummm..cause?? It's all a matter of taste. Some people HATE Harry Potter. Everyone has their thing they are into. I enjoyed the Harry Potter books, and the Twilight series. DD12 asked to read them, a friend recommended them. I read it too, to make sure it was age appropriate, and I enjoyed them. It's a nice read.

And heck..just like Harry Potter got kids to read...so is this..and that's all that matters.

We did see the movie today..and it was ok, we went in with very low expectations. I can see why it got panned. I think the director destroyed what could have been a really good movie. But everyone's vision is different. Hopefully the studio will pick a different director for the second movie!!

From talking to my dd (15) it's obvious that the appeal of Twilight is that it's a love story. The vampire angle isn't the big draw just a catalyst.

It's not like Harry aside from the fact that they were both serial books that teens particularly took to. Twilight is more 'girls' while HP was across the board.

I LOVE vampires...but Lestat is more my speed. I have several shelves full of exclusively vampire books - many are reference-type (written by Montague Summers and Katherine Ramsland, for example) and short story compilations, though. I'm currently reading The Science of Vampires by Katherine Ramsland.

Compared to Dracula and Lestat and The Vampyre by John Polidori (a contemporary of Lord Byron and the Shelleys, I believe), Twilight is just okay. I've read the books, but I'll wait for the movie to be released on DVD.

I read Twilight just to see what the fuss was about. It took FOREVER to get interesting then the last quarter was pretty good. I liked New Moon much better; a lot more going on throughout the whole book but very predictable. I will finish the series though.

Why? I am a 40ish mom and I enjoyed the temporary escape from reality in both the books and the movie.

I loved the movie and I will see it again...

I read the first in the series because DD16 loved it. I thought it was stupid. Didn't bother with the others.

I am not a fan of vampires at all. However, I picked up the first book just to see what the fuss was all about, and I ended up reading it in one sitting.

I'm a mid-30's mom, and I enjoyed the brief escape from reality. It's not highbrow fiction, but that's not what I want to read after spending hours studying. ;)

PS--I've seen the movie twice, and although it didn't measure up to my impressions of the book, I'll be seeing it again to celebrate the end of finals. :)

DD (15) read it about a year ago, she was so in to it that I asked her what she was reading. When she told me it was about vampires and werewolves...I was like, um, okay, glad you're reading. I am not into vampires or werewolves at all. Fast forward to six months ago when a friend of mine kept telling me that I had to read it. Surprisingly I really liked it. Like pp said, it's a nice love story with a twist. Who wouldn't want a protective Edward who's so in love with you? I watched the movie and ugh! I wish the director had done it justice...I hated the "zoolander" face poses that they were doing. Didn't like the musice either, I thought it was more of a made for tv movie. I loved HP movie and books and it seems like JK had a better grasp of her vision than Stephanie did and wasn't going to take any less than that. I'll go see the second movie but I hope it's better than this one.

On Thanksgiving my SIL (she's 17) asked if DH and I (we're fantasy fans) had read Twilight. I said that no, I had looked into it after hearing much about it and decided it was a bit juvenile for even our (admittedly juvenile) tastes. She said everyone at her school is either obsessed with it or hates it. I told her to read the original angsty vampire novels, by Anne Rice. DH sort of freaked out at me advising teenage Catholic school girls to read...ummm...adult literature. I think it's so cute how he still thinks his little sister is a baby.

I LOVE vampires...but Lestat is more my speed.

:thumbsup2

Don't even get me started on my Lestat obsession. Especially Queen of the Damned. Actually, DH had to stop me from naming DS6 Lestat... :rolleyes1

I read all four of the Twilight books (why didn't they leave it a trilogy? Why?) and it definitely wasn't my kind of story. Actually I'm quite concerned about the controlling, emotionally abusive relationship they have going, but ignoring that, I'll say the main reason I can't stand it is the abuse of the semicolon. Seriously, what's up with that?

While I understand the current obsession about vampires, that novel was just horrible.

Really, it was. It was horribly written with a boring, mary-sue type plot. As a teen myself I continue to be horrified with the books that become popular. I mean, Harry Potter (the first few were ok, but the last few....), Eragon and now Twilight? Blech.

There are so many more masterfully written young adult novels out there! Are teens (and adults) so under-read that they think this stuff is good?

I guess it just really gets on my nerves.

Just checked the poll results. It looks like I'm the only one that has never heard of it. I opened the thread assuming that it was about that time of day between sunset and night. So what is it? I'm assuming it's a book or a series of books.

I hate it, sorry. The hype is CRAZY!! I'm a HUGE Harry Potter fan so maybe that's why, I don't know.... but regardless, Twilight ain't my cup of tea.

Now sit me in front of Order of the Phoenix (favorite HP film) with Alan Rickman as Snape and I'm good to go. :goodvibes
ITA. :thumbsup2

I'm 39 and love the books. Not so much the movie, but hoping they improve on that. Anyway why do I, not a teen girl, love the books? They are quick reads and I love the passion and longing and desire! It brings you back to the day when you had that first love and first kiss and all those raging hormones! LOL! I just find them really fun to read!

Haven't read the books myself and really don't want to. At first I was kind of curious with the movie coming out but now I'm just sick of all the hype.

I also don't consider myself a HUGE Harry Potter fan (I've read all the books and seen the movies but am not overly obsessive) but now with Twilight I think it's making me like HP more...:rotfl:

me hubby and daughter went to the movie on friday.... she read the book and we didn't. I liked it hubby didn't. I thought I was gonna see more vampire stuff but it was just a lot of drama, It was ok :)

For me, Twilight is something I would have loved about fifteen years ago. Today, as an adult, I really can't read it without rolling my eyes out of my head. I don't care if So-and-so asks So-and-so to the Prom. I don't care if So-and-so is jealous that another So-and-so is going out with a different So-and-so. The teen angst gets old fast.

If Twilight had been written as an adult novel, I probably would have enjoyed it more. But the teen angst ruined it for me. Not to mention that Bella is probably the most boring character I've ever read. I actually like Edward, but I just get annoyed at him for being obsessed with somebody so dull. And I've even read Midnight Sun, and Bella is even more boring in the third person.

I've actually found a great deal of HP fans are also Twlight fans.

Anywho. I think it's more about the story line and the fact that the characters all work well together regardless of their race.
