Twelve Months of Training and Travel

There is a lot of data on that, where cross training versus back to back running days allows for better recovery.

I hope mine is completely effort based versus ability based. It feels that way but we will see. Some times I think I take the slow easy run a little too literally. I am rarely sore or tired. Occasionally stiff after the really long runs.

I went out 40 min later this morning than the earlier weekday runs. I was supposed to do 4-5 miles but ugh. 75 and 86% humidity. I called it good at 3 miles so I'd have time for one last dip in the pool. Definitely slow and easy but also hot and ugh! Lol. Pool won.

I think the pool should have won!! Good for you in taking it slow and easy. I think it is working for you. Who knows...maybe eventually it will work for me. Right now I have just been running way slower than what I did last year. I just can't see the point in pushing too hard. I mentioned it on your PTR...but maybe I just need a change of scenery to jump start me. Maybe between the change and it being race day I will actually see my pace rebound back to what I think it should be.

That's definitely a part of it. The whole "what is the point" of pushing it too hard. I do worry I have taken that too far and am too casual about it but we will see I guess.

What I think I am capable of doing, and what I generally "do" do (or the level of effort I feel like giving) can often be 2 very different things.

Which at some point makes me question what I am really capable of.

And then I go...but does it really matter?

No. Not really. As long as at the end of the day I do feel I gave it my best. That is all I really hope for.

That and no bio breaks.

LOL!

I think you have not taken it too far. I think you are going to rock the race!!!

What I think I am capable of doing, and what I generally "do" do (or the level of effort I feel like giving) can often be 2 very different things.

Which at some point makes me question what I am really capable of.

I am sure you are not at a plateau yet. I am sure you are capable of more. :goodvibes

And then I go...but does it really matter?

No. Not really. As long as at the end of the day I do feel I gave it my best. That is all I really hope for.

I think I took longer to get to this point than you did. And even now...probably only diid because my plateau and regression has forced me to...but still... I am just about completely to a point of just saying if I do my best... it is good enough.

That and no bio breaks.

LOL!

Oh my gosh yes!!!

I have lots to share. Where to begin and how to organize my thoughts. :scratchin.

Well, since I worry that this will affect my training/running. (but pretty sure it wont') lets start with I was rear ended today. I was stopped and was completely twisted in my seat trying to find something in my center console. I suspect that the driver behind me had his foot slip off the break and onto his gas pedal because he didn't just roll into me. That being said.. with both cars being SUV's, mine had no damage and his had minimal. Me though.. I am a bit sore. A bit sore today makes me worry I will be stiff by this weekend. And... this weekend is the disneyland half marathon!:woohoo: So tomorrow is a run day and I will see how I feel. I bio freezed heavily and took some tylenol. Cross your fingers that I wake less sore and not more.

I have just two runs left before the half. Both are during my taper and will be just short ones. Probably 4 milers... maybe a 4 and a 3. I am pretty ready for some shorter runs.

I took my mileage up to 14 miles on 8/2. It wasn't horrible to complete. Maybe a tad on the warm side weather wise but I ran the entire thing. I wish my pace had been faster but at this point I will take 10:47. I was pretty tapped after the run though. I didn't understand quite why until on monday when my tummy started waging a revolt. So I had a couple hard runs that week with many bio breaks. :rolleyes1

The following week on 8/9, I decided that I was going to try some intervals to see if that helped me. As usual my knees were not fans of the starting and stopping so I had to ease in and out of each run/walk segment. I did 4/1's and finished 13.1 with a pace of 10:26.

Snoqualmie Railroad Days 10k Race Recap

On 8/16, I ran a 10k. It was my third year in a row running it. It is a Pacific Northwest USATF championship race and WOW it has some fast runners. Like the top 25% of the runners are under a 7 minute mile. I knew going in I had no hopes of placing. My top goal was to be able to get an overall 10k PR so that I would have an even better time to submit to RD for a future race. If not that then the goal was at least to PR the race itself. Last year, I finished the course in 57:24. This year though as we arrived, I lost a lot of my hopes. The air was thick with moisture. So much that everything was damp. The good news was that Steve was running it this year. This was the first year for him. Last year he did not even come up with me to the race. It was really nice to have him there.

I try to shake off some pre race jitters by taking some bad selfies.

Pretty much the same shot..but here are a couple for ya.

As I figured the race was tough. That kinda of humidity is like running through jello to me. The race begins with both 10k and 5k running along side each other. This makes for a challenging race because those running the 5k may not be in it for speed quite as much as those who are doing the 10k. So the race was very congested at the start. I did a lot of weaving to get through the crowd. (I shouldn't have) I also almost got taken out by a kid who hopped in front of me and then abruptly stopped. It eventually thinned out and by the time the 5k runners turned off I had plenty of space.

The first half of the racei managed to keep my pace on track to finish with a better time than last year. Then I just figured that it was going to have to be good enough. It wouldn't be a better time to submit to RD and I was struggling to keep my pace down. I really didn't want to repeat how I felt after the 5k weeks before so I decided that I was not going to push so hard.

I finished upright... having not walked at all and no where near feeling like I was going to be sick. I finished not with an over all 10k PR nor a PR for the race. My time this year was 59:28. I saw the clock was at an hour and I knew that I would not be happy to finish in over an hour. So I pushed the last bit to come in just a hair under. Good enough.

I finished 134 out of 186. 52 out of 81 women. 7 out of 11 in my age group. Oh, this was probably the worst I have done since my very first 10k which.. was this race.

Steve did awesome. He ran the entire thing. He did NOT get sick at the finish. He missed his overall best 10k time by just 10 seconds and finished with a time of 1:05:38. 160 out of 186. 92 out of 105 males and 10 out of 10 in age group.

I needed 12 miles this day though and this was just half there. So once we got home I went back out. When did I go out? In the heat of the day. It was over 80 degrees. I have NEVER ran in that high of a temp. Guess what? I didn't die. It wasn't much worse than 70 degrees. I took it slow.. ran with 5/1 intervals and managed to complete the last 6 miles I needed to get in. (with just a hair over a 10 minute mile pace) :rotfl: I am not sure when my mindset changed so. Last August I was consistently running paces in the mid 8 minute range. Now I am happy to pull off a 10 minute. I guess it was that temp that made me feel happy with the pace... or maybe I just am not entirely caring about improving any more.

Last week I cut my mid week runs down in mileage last week as my taper progressed. I shaved a mile off of each making tuesday a 5 miler and thursday a 4 miler. This was good timing not only because I am ready to take my miles down a tad but onn monday 8/18, my lungs started acting up again. Nothing like feeling like you have an elephant sitting on your chest to make you start using your inhaler again. :rollyes: I think it has to do with Steve and his remodeling project in our master bath. I think the dust from it is just making my lungs unhappy. At first I was very worried I was getting sick. Now though I figure it must just be irritation since it hasn't gone away.

Adventure Run recap
8/21 we did something I had not done all summer. An adventure run!! :woohoo: I think it has just been too hot in the early evening to do the June or July event. It was just Steve, Zoe and I this time. We perused the vendors. It was a special back to school event at the shopping district where the event is held so there were a lot of vendors. We picked up some samples and go information on various other events set in the future. We went with the same pace guide as before. We didn't go nearly as fast this time and Zoe had no trouble keeping up. We did opt to skip some of the stops and in the end only did about 2 and a quarter miles. There was a slip and slide again. I even went down it. Zoe had to go twice. We had a great time. We did not stay for the after party and we did not win a single prize. I think summer months there are just so many people it reduces our odds. Still, can't stress enough how much fun we had.

Here are some pictures of the event. hmm, I snagged them from their facebook. It appears that they are super big. I don't have the energy to copy, save and resize them all. If they are just toooo mondo big, can y'all please let me know and I will take them down.(and be honest!) Who knows... maybe I will resize them later.

Saturday, 8/23 was my last long run before the half. I decided it didn't have to be fast at all. I decided I really wanted the company. So Steve and I went out together and ran. We did 5/1 intervals. It was a lot of fun. He was in new shoes though (I will get to that in a "purchases" update) and so his shins were hurting. He made it about 6.5 miles before calling it good. I went on for another mile or so finishing with 8 and a quarter miles. His goal was to be in the 10:30 to 11 minute range and we did just that. 10:50!

So as I mentioned now just 2 runs left until the disneyland half! :woohoo: I am getting excited!!!

Hi Ann!
I am all caught up here as well. ;) Took me quite some time!

Sorry to hear about the accident. I really hope you are going to feel okay for the Disneyland run! :thumbsup2

Let me start by - I am a good driver. I really am.

Tonight on my way home moments after I was complaining that my back was hurting from yesterday's rear ending... a car pulled out into my lane of traffic. She had been stopped and was making a left hand turn across the highway. Since it was a highway I was not going slow. Not only did she pull out but then stopped. It is funny how in these moments everything truly goes into slow motion. I thought "I am going to hit T-Bone her". I thought this as I slammed on my breaks. The anti lock kicked in and I began to slow but it wasn't happening fast enough. I swerved across the center into the oncoming lane. With oncoming traffic I then had to act fast not to drive head on into someone else. So I swerved back into my lane.

I did not make contact with the oncoming traffic but I did with the car that initiated the incident. Again as if everything was in slow motion I watched as I grazed the front of her car.

Luckily, no one was hurt. My beast barely damaged. Her car minimally damaged.

I am more wigged out than anything - that two days in a row my car has made contact with another car.

Oh.. yes, and my back hurts. ;)

Omg Ann!!!!

You need to not leave the house until Friday. Just rest!!!!!

I am so glad you are ok. We have had so many near misses lately by idiot drivers it is insane.

Ice everything and go to bed. I would be completely wigged out too.

Sending huge huge hugs

Ann, so sorry to hear this!

But I am very grateful, you were not hurt and were able to avoid an even bigger accident.
Have a doctor look at your back ... don't take it too lightly.

Ugh! Other drivers suck! You need to be overly cautious tomorrow so its not a three in a row thing.

Glad you are ok outside of being sore. You should set up a massage or something while you are out of town this weekend.

ANN.

Ohhhhh my gosh, I am so glad you are okay!! What a rough couple of days you have had. :worried: You totally deserve a fun trip to Disneyland. I hope you are feeling better! An enclose yourself in a protective bubble for the next few days, won't you?!

Sounds like a good 14-miler! :thumbsup2 The conditions for your 10K sound so tough! The extreme humidity is such a killer. It's amazing how much of an effect the weather can have on a run. Great that you were able to finish in under and hour despite those conditions, and congrats to Steve on a great race! :goodvibes

The adventure run looks like so much fun! And speaking of fun...I spy a SparkleSkirt in those pictures!! So cute. :)

Just 2 more runs left!! YAY!! :yay:

I said it on FB and I'll say it here again, I'm just glad that YOU are okay...that could have been a disaster.

I'm sorry your back is bothering you...hope it feels better soon.

I have lots to share. Where to begin and how to organize my thoughts. :scratchin.

Well, since I worry that this will affect my training/running. (but pretty sure it wont') lets start with I was rear ended today. Cross your fingers that I wake less sore and not more.

I hope your back is feeling better. I don't like the fact you were twisted at the console at all. I agree with Karin, getting it checked can't hurt.

I have just two runs left before the half. Both are during my taper and will be just short ones. Probably 4 milers... maybe a 4 and a 3. I am pretty ready for some shorter runs.

I really should have 2 but, unless I run friday in Anaheim, not going to happen

And I don't plan to do that!

:rolleyes1

I think 10:47 for that distance is just fine for a long slow easy run

or it would be for me anyway!

The following week on 8/9, I decided that I was going to try some intervals to see if that helped me. As usual my knees were not fans of the starting and stopping so I had to ease in and out of each run/walk segment. I did 4/1's and finished 13.1 with a pace of 10:26.

Again, perfectly fine and right where my long slow easy's have been. When you say 4/1 is that 4 min/1 min? 4 miles/ 1 mile? 40 sec/10 sec? I swear I never quite know how to figure those out and what might actually work for me.

Someday I will master the selfie. LOL!

As I figured the race was tough. That kinda of humidity is like running through jello to me. The race begins with both 10k and 5k running along side each other. Jello is exactly it! You did far better than I on that day. that was my scheduled 14. I ran 8, decided I didn't care and was DONE, walked 3 for a total of 11. In the bad socks.

Steve did awesome. He ran the entire thing. He did NOT get sick at the finish. He missed his overall best 10k time by just 10 seconds and finished with a time of 1:05:38. 160 out of 186. 92 out of 105 males and 10 out of 10 in age group.

You were consistently running 12 miles in a mid 8 range???? WHOA! I never run more than a mile, maybe 2 in that range other than my one fluke race. Which was in the 50's so I am sure that had a lot to do with it lol.

Last week I cut my mid week runs down in mileage last week as my taper progressed. I shaved a mile off of each making tuesday a 5 miler and thursday a 4 miler. UGH for remodeling dust. That will definitely impact the lungs. Hope it is getting better.

Looks like a really fun event! Super cute pictures of Zoe, she is clearly having a blast.

Were you really scheduled for 8? I thought that plan only had 5 for that day. You have completely blown me away in miles.

So as I mentioned now just 2 runs left until the disneyland half! :woohoo: I am getting excited!!!

Last run today for you?

I am done!

Let me start by - I am a good driver. I really am.

She had been stopped and was making a left hand turn across the highway. Since it was a highway I was not going slow. Not only did she pull out but then stopped. Luckily, no one was hurt. My beast barely damaged. Her car minimally damaged.

I am more wigged out than anything - that two days in a row my car has made contact with another car.

Oh.. yes, and my back hurts. ;)

GO GET SEEN today. To be safe.

Other than that, stay out of the car until someone drives you to the airport TOMORROW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Oh my goodness! I really hope you are ok! That is super scary. Glad you were not terribly hurt. I cannot believe you had that happen two days in a row! What on earth was the other driver thinking? I have had a couple close calls this week with dumb drivers. One decided to stop in the middle of the road at a green light! Really?

Anyways, safe travels tomorrow. Make sure you get seen today if you need to! See you tomorrow!

Adorable picture - that is if I cut the right one. If I didn't I am too lazy to go back and fix it. It's the adorable last one of Zoe.

Ugh - so sorry to hear about your bad luck with driving recently. That is terrible. Sounds like you had good instincts and really reacted well with that last accident. I hope you are all recovered and ready to run on Sunday.

Best of luck to you and Cynthia. I know you guys will be amazing! ::yes::

Yikes, Ann, on the accidents!!! :scared1:

I'm glad neither was very serious and that your back was okay during the race!!

Omg Ann!!!!

You need to not leave the house until Friday. Just rest!!!!!

I am so glad you are ok. We have had so many near misses lately by idiot drivers it is insane.

Ice everything and go to bed. I would be completely wigged out too.

Sending huge huge hugs

I probably never thanked you for your concern. As you know... I got through the weekend just fine despite the crazy driving from last week. :goodvibes

Ann, so sorry to hear this!

But I am very grateful, you were not hurt and were able to avoid an even bigger accident.
Have a doctor look at your back ... don't take it too lightly.

Thank you so much, Karin. I am fine. I wonder if my back being sore has more to do with last week than the race in DLR...but I will totally live. :goodvibes

Ugh! Other drivers suck! You need to be overly cautious tomorrow so its not a three in a row thing.

Glad you are ok outside of being sore. You should set up a massage or something while you are out of town this weekend.

I was cautious and survived the last days before the race. The weekend was very full and there really was not time for a massage. Not that I would have got one. I have never had a massage outside of treatment after a MVA 20 years ago.

Ohmygosh! I'm glad you are ok, how scary!!

It was scary. Kinda just wigged me out more than anything..

ANN.

Ohhhhh my gosh, I am so glad you are okay!! What a rough couple of days you have had. :worried: You totally deserve a fun trip to Disneyland. I hope you are feeling better! An enclose yourself in a protective bubble for the next few days, won't you?!

I did play it safe and survived till the weekend. Not sure if I deserve the trip to DL... but it certainly was a blast!

Sounds like a good 14-miler! :thumbsup2

It was and more than anything... it was a good mental boost. Even thought it was not extremely fast I ran the entire thing. It helped me to realize I can go that distance.

The conditions for your 10K sound so tough! The extreme humidity is such a killer. It's amazing how much of an effect the weather can have on a run. Great that you were able to finish in under and hour despite those conditions, and congrats to Steve on a great race! :goodvibes

It was a hard race. I will do it again next year and hopefully do better. I have no doubt that Steve will too. :goodvibes

The adventure run looks like so much fun! And speaking of fun...I spy a SparkleSkirt in those pictures!! So cute. :)

They totally are fun and yep... that is a sparkle skirt!

Just 2 more runs left!! YAY!! :yay:

And now I have the count down of runs until the ToT!

I said it on FB and I'll say it here again, I'm just glad that YOU are okay...that could have been a disaster.

I'm sorry your back is bothering you...hope it feels better soon.

 thanks so much, Kathy!

I hope your back is feeling better. I don't like the fact you were twisted at the console at all. I agree with Karin, getting it checked can't hurt.

I will survive. I have had some spasms but really it could just as easily be due to the race.

I really should have 2 but, unless I run friday in Anaheim, not going to happen

And I don't plan to do that!

It certainly didn't affect your performance! You did awesome!!!

I think 10:47 for that distance is just fine for a long slow easy run

or it would be for me anyway!

Well, at least I did a tad better than that on sunday. ;)

Again, perfectly fine and right where my long slow easy's have been. When you say 4/1 is that 4 min/1 min? 4 miles/ 1 mile? 40 sec/10 sec? I swear I never quite know how to figure those out and what might actually work for me.

Well, it was time. 4 minutes and 1 in my scenario . I think there are some that do seconds. I just think I get more sore when I stop. (I really think that my intervals are what has caused me to be unusually sore post race)

Someday I will master the selfie. LOL!

I would like to say someday I will too...but so far... not so much. :rotfl:

Jello is exactly it! You did far better than I on that day. that was my scheduled 14. I ran 8, decided I didn't care and was DONE, walked 3 for a total of 11. In the bad socks.

I am just so glad the humidity is dropping!

You were consistently running 12 miles in a mid 8 range???? WHOA! I never run more than a mile, maybe 2 in that range other than my one fluke race. Which was in the 50's so I am sure that had a lot to do with it lol.

Oh, no... not 12 milers. More like 4 to 5 mile runs. I have a lot of 8:30 to 8:50 pace runs that are under 6 miles...but I also have a lot that are over 9. I think I just look at my graph and think that I have backslide...but really I think I am more at at average than not. I do have some longer runs that were sub 9...so I know I can do it. But the graph is what makes me panic.

See my 7 to 11 mile runs look like this.

My 11+ are like this

UGH for remodeling dust. That will definitely impact the lungs. Hope it is getting better.

Lungs were feeling great by the time we left CA but I started to get thrush from the advair. So I stopped and now I am feeling like I need to cough constantly... constantly on the verge of an asthma attack. So either the environment is the big factor or it is the medication....

Looks like a really fun event! Super cute pictures of Zoe, she is clearly having a blast.

So fun! And thank you! Yes... she had a ton of fun.

Were you really scheduled for 8? I thought that plan only had 5 for that day. You have completely blown me away in miles.

I have other races that I am contending with. The day I did the 8 miles... if I were following the ToT training it called for 9. I just have decided to do my own thing. I need to take my miles back up a bit now in prep for the 10 miler and then back down. I will totally be yoyoing for the next few months.

Last run today for you?

I am done!

GO GET SEEN today. To be safe.

Other than that, stay out of the car until someone drives you to the airport TOMORROW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I was fine. I just complain a lot. ;)

Really?

It was definitely pretty unlucky to have happen two days in a row...but luckily it was just the two.

Anyways, safe travels tomorrow. Make sure you get seen today if you need to! See you tomorrow!

It was so nice to see you! I am sorry I didn't reconnect with you later in the trip. Between the race and post race stuff I just lost time.

Adorable picture - that is if I cut the right one. If I didn't I am too lazy to go back and fix it. It's the adorable last one of Zoe.

It was the right one, and thank you. She totally was up for playing "model"

Ugh - so sorry to hear about your bad luck with driving recently. That is terrible. Sounds like you had good instincts and really reacted well with that last accident. I hope you are all recovered and ready to run on Sunday.

It was crazy bad luck but I survived the week and as you know..was fine for sunday. :goodvibes

Best of luck to you and Cynthia. I know you guys will be amazing! ::yes::

Thank you so much! I am mostly ok with how it went. Most importantly I had a great time. I wish I had performed a tad better but I will take it as it wasn't horrible.

Cynthia... well, she of course rocked it! For a first half I am in awe of her :worship: I would have been very happy to have matched her pace. I was close for about half of it.... then I just kinda gave up.

Yikes, Ann, on the accidents!!! :scared1:

It was pretty scary to think about but it really wasn't so bad IRL.

I'm glad neither was very serious and that your back was okay during the race!!

Exactly! I survived and the race went well. Does my back hurt now from the race or from the incidents last week? I don't know. I would suspect that the low back spasms are from being rear ended..but then again 13.1 isn't an easy thing to do to your body.

Oh no! Scary scary stuff! I'm glad you weren't seriously hurt! Hope your back gets feeling better soon! :goodvibes

Hope all is well. Will there be a race recap soon? I'd love to see some pics! So proud of you gals!
