My DS12 is torn a little on what he wants for Christmas this year. He started to put together a list that included a couple of toys and video games. But, he couldn't think of anything he really wanted. I suggested that maybe he wanted some special clothes/shoes or maybe a new iPod or laptop computer. I'm not a big fan of video games, so he has a Wii that his grandmother gave him, but I'm reluctant to encourage more gaming by buying the Xbox system.

He's at that age, where he still loves Legos and a few toys. But, mostly spends his time reading or playing games on the computer.

Thoughts... suggestions?

An e-reader or tablet? Something that he can read on and play some games on.

no suggestions here - my 12 son sounds just like yours. I was just thinking I have no ideal what to get him. I'm not a 'Gamer' but I recoginize the video games are something he enjoys.. if not for that I wouldn't have any ideals, lol.

he still loves lego's so I know he's getting those and some skylanders (video game) plus a few books, but honestly, I can't think of anything with a "wow" factor to it.

my 9 year old started his list, and then finally, just handed me the TRU toy book and said basically all the boy things in here mom. I'm like whatever!:rotfl2:

Hey I've got one of those too ~ my 12 year old is getting a refurbed 32GB Touch straight from Apple *I already have it.
A couple Lego LOTR sets ~ our Blockbuster finally had the xBox Lego LOTR game last night *he's been wanting to rent it for a while, it's $3 a day but we have the $15 a month plan ~ one item out at a time - works great for game rentals.
He's requested Beatles & AC/DC Rock Band games. Those will be purchases not rentals.
He's mentioned hunting gear  I'll let his dad take care of that - I don't come from hunting folk :hippie: plus his birthday is in April *I plan to get him a new bike for his bday.

The boy and I each got a 32GB HP Touchpad last Christmas *$150 each! His is at his dad's getting Androided ~ he's had it for a while....
And 2 Christmases ago we got a family ereader ~ doesn't get used much, we prefer real books - heck I have a Kindle, where is it...?

I have a son the same age and I struggle as well. Except that I am giving up the video game battle and getting him a PS3. We have a Wii and he has outgrown it. Although, he is not getting M games like his friends - Teen only. But that is actually for his December birthday.

Other things he will receive at Xmas are two magazine subscriptions - SI Kids and Popular Science. Books, cool athletic shoes, a Nerf-like sling shot, Packers jersey and some sports hoodies. No "wow" gift for him this Xmas either. Although, when I add it all up, it makes me say "wow" - $$$ :rolleyes1

I snipped a bit ~ I like the magazine subscription idea.
I've purchased 2 pairs of Nikes for DS recently ~ he appreciates them but wants "cool" ones.... I may get him a gift card and take him shopping for those cool Nikes :cool1: he's requested a Nike hoodie *he's outgrown the one my dad gave him ~ I got a mens Med ~ he's so BIG :clown: :worried:

My DS12 has requested a rubber band gun so I'll probably get one from here:
www.rubberbandguns.com
They also have targets & ammo (rubber bands) to go along with it. Other things on his list are t-shirts with sayings like "enjoy Coke" or "I'm a Pepper", a sketchbook and Legos. For DS's birthday in October, his big request was a spork! We found a metal one at Gander Mountain for $10 and he loves that thing - uses it at every meal!

Here's some things my tweens/teens have asked for this year:

bow and arrow
root beer making kit
hoodies for fave sports team
video games
Wizard 101 membership
new ipod (theirs are really old)
snap circuits (they have some and want more)
Disney Head Bandz game
pogo stick

My 11 year old just informed me he "really really wants" the new Monopoly: World War II game. It's $40 and only available from the WWII Museum in New Orleans.

He doesn't have any gaming systems or IPOD, so with that and a few Lego Ninjao sets (have to find one that he DOESN'T have) he'll be set. Absolutely does not want clothes. Maybe a few books.

I'm getting ds11 a handheld playstation. We have an xbox that he always plays. The playstation will be for when we travel.

I'm also getting ds11 and dd13 electric scooters (the simple stand-up ones).

DD13 will get make up and art supplies.

I've been looking at cool tools/gadgets for ds. Also, flashlights... all different types of flashlights for him, from the finger ones, to ones that stand up in different positions w/ movable arms, etc.

I saw a snowball slingshot type toy that looked cool.

Looking for other ideas...

I suggest looking at the kindle fire.
My boys got them last year and use them daily. They were 9 and 11. My now 12 yr old uses his to keep his music lessons on it and the metronome. And as a music player... Plus all the apps, watches tv, etc. Another bonus is they can't get viruses on it like a laptop/pc... He really messed up my laptop with mine craft downloads.

We thought he would want an iPad this year but he wants a different tablet (after we told him no laptop, bc of what he did to mine). And he's getting an iPod shuffle from his gma. He asked for a Hoodie Buddie so that will work great with the jacket.

He also loves his blue tooth headphones.
He's also getting guitar accessories. If he wasn't into the guitar, we wouldnt know what to get him!
