'Twas the Week Before Christmas... Done & where to find us next!

I know – I’ve been slacking big-time with this report. All I can say is that I may have bitten off more than I can chew… between work, school issues for Leo and my own schoolwork, I just haven’t had the time I’d like to write this. I’m sorry. :guilty:

But I had a little break in the action and got busy with an update. We’re up to the fourth night of our five-night trip. Remember that we’d spent the morning at the Magic Kingdom and by early afternoon, it was time to dodge the incoming crowds and head for greener pastures – Epcot.

I’d say that might be the worst metaphor ever, but it actually applies here… have you ever noticed just how green Epcot is? I’ve long thought all those stretches of unnaturally green grass are what make my heart melt for Epcot. I’m especially partial to the grassy knoll (NO Kevin Costner) near the entrance to the Living Seas. Aside from just being pretty, that’s also where Leo learned to walk! :goodvibes

Anyway, we hopped a monorail to Epcot (EP) and watched the crowds disappear behind us as we whizzed over to the much easier and slower pace of Future World. There were probably lots of people there, too, and likely some long waits for rides… but we had other plans that called for a leisurely pace and some new experiences. Our only real etched-in-stone plan was dinner. But I’ll get to that in a bit.

We decided to wander about Innoventions, since we usually skip it in favor of rides. We looked in the window of the Velcro show, but it wasn’t calling us. The Great Piggybank Adventure, however, was.

The Great Piggybank Adventure was very cool and I highly recommend it! Basically, the idea is to show folks how to invest and save wisely. It’s sponsored by T. Rowe Price, but really, the product placement was minimal and our attention was very focused on the game.

To begin, we were provided with our Piggy, who we’d move from station to station, determining a goal for our savings and then navigating savings strategies and pitfalls.

5285793481_52e21c40f0.jpg

We chose to save for a vacation (of course!) on a warm, sunny beach. Given that we live less than five miles from a warm, sunny beach, we thought this was a pretty easy one to nail.

We were mistaken. :rotfl:

Sadly, I must report that the Great Piggybank Adventure showed us for what we are: a family of not particularly savvy investors who prefer safety over risk and probably spend more on vacations than we should. Oh well. It was a lot of fun and didn’t tell us anything we didn’t already know, so it was a winner all the way around!

And we were then ready for an over-priced shopping tour of World Showcase.

We bought Leo a Transformers/PowerRangers/Pokemon something or other in Japan, strolled the alleys of Morocco, and waved to our peeps at Tutto before descending upon the Germany pavilion to drop some serious change on food.

Yes, food. And wine. Not to be confused with my annual day at the Epcot Food & Wine Fest at which serious change is dropped in every pavilion.

This time, it was in only two spots: the Werthers shop and the Ghluewine cart. I think stupid Werthers has me addicted to their caramel and chocolate dipped pretzel rods; just the other day I found myself considering a day trip to WDW… just for those pretzel rods. :headache:

But at least I can count on the pretzel rods being there in the future. The Ghluewine, however, is a seasonal delicacy and had to be partaken of while in the right season. If you’ve not sampled it, Ghluewine is a somewhat sweet (but not overly so – I’m a dry wine person and Ghluewine doesn’t make me melt) red wine that’s served hot, like tea. It’s absolutely perfect for a crisp, cool afternoon and it went down very nicely, thank you very much!

5286392080_7bca03efff.jpg

We all sat on a bench, out by the edge of the lake, me sipping my wine while Gramma and Leo munched on some Werther’s treats. It was just about perfect; the sun was low in the sky, dappling Epcot in shadow and warm, golden light, and we were content to sit a spell and enjoy the company of each other. We don’t often have those opportunities in our daily lives, and we never seem to during summer WDW trips. That’s a big difference between our summer and winter times at WDW and I’d plumb forgotten about it until that moment. I vowed to myself then and there that we’d spend some more winter quality time in the House of Mouse in future years. And, I’m signed up to do just that. ;)

We eventually began making our way over toward the Mexico pavilion, stopping along the way for a final viewing of the Dragon Acrobats in the China pavilion. They’re ending their contract with Disney, this month I think, and won’t be back. We’ve enjoyed watching them for years and will miss them, but hope they’re moving on to better gigs.

Finally, we made it to our end destination: La Hacienda de San Angel, Epcot’s new table service/ counter service establishment that took the place of the old Cantina. Aesthetically, the Disney folks did a superb job; the waterfront never looked better over there. The exterior of the building is lovely but unobtrusive; it’s not fighting for attention with the pyramid, but holds its own with saffron colored stucco, terracotta tiled overhangs and wrought iron embellishments. It looks like things will be dark inside…

... which makes the experience of entering the dining room all the neater – the interior was absolutely bathed in the light of sunset! A long row of windows overlooks the lake and seating is tiered, so that everyone gets a nice view.

5286394856_04c6ae6204_z.jpg

This was taken from our table. We were the furthest away from the windows, in a raised semi-circular booth. It was perfect!

Know what else was perfect at La Hacienda? The service. And the drinks. And the food. And the… everything.

Our server knew his stuff; he didn’t just recommend things for us, he took the time to ask what types of flavors we enjoy and paired us with food and drink selections that seemed tailor-made for our unique tastes. I began with a Guava margarita that I feared would be overly fruity and sweet… and I was blissfully mistaken. It was quite possibly the best margarita I’ve ever tasted! Gramma gave excellent reviews on her glass of white wine, too. A basket of fresh, crisp tortilla chips and a couple of salsa options come standard and, frankly, could have been a light meal themselves with a side salad. They were that good. Even Leo, who previously had refused to sample salsa, was won over!

5286392232_015ff23e85.jpg

We were so overwhelmed by the yummy-sounding menu choices, we did something we very rarely do: we ordered an appetizer to share. We went with the Botana - a sampling of Mexican favorites: chicken tostado, Chilorio sope (marinated pork), and cheese empanada. I think we mostly just moaned in joy and appreciation from that point on. I simply don’t have words for how amazing the flavors were in both the appetizer items and the main dishes. For entrees, Leo had chicken tenders with sautéed green beans and he proclaimed those green beans the best he’s EVER had! I went with the Puerco en Salsa de Mole Negro - roasted pork tenderloin with mole negro sauce, served with esquites (roasted corn), sweet potato mash, and sautéed vegetables. Gramma chose the Pescado a la Talla - grilled tilapia served with esquites (roasted corn), nopales (cactus leaves) and mango chutney. For the table, our server brought out bowls of rice and black beans.

Seriously, we were so loaded up with food, it was ridiculous. You could have fed a small nation with what was on our table. Or… you could eat less than half of the entrees and enjoy the leftovers the next day, which we did! Have I mentioned how much we loved having a kitchen?

And yes, we also caved in to temptation and had some dessert. Leo discovered the joy that is a churro, Gramma had something chocolaty and I had a few bites of each while finishing my margarita.

Really, if there’s a heaven, I hope it’s catered by La Hacienda. :cloud9: This just might have knocked Tutto out of the top spot for our favorite WDW eatery and I can’t wait to go back again!

After dinner, we bundled up, gathered our gazillion bags of toys, caramel treats and leftover Mexican food… and decided to go back to the condo. The plan had been to stay for Illuminations, but no one was feeling the pyrotechnic love that night. We were all warm and full from dinner and not one of us cherished the thought of becoming progressively colder as we stood outdoors waiting for Illuminations to start.

Instead, we made our way back to the car, still parked at the Ticket and Transportation Center form that morning, and drove back to the Reunion condo. With nothing planned for the next morning, there was no rushing through showers and pre-bedtime procedures; rather, we watched a movie, did some more laundry (whee!), and just plain r e l a x e d.

I think if I could create the “Perfect Disney World Day”, it might come very, very close to the day I’ve just described. For the first time in a long time, I went to bed on a WDW vacation feeling unhurried, well-rested, unencumbered by malicious thoughts about mean-spirited crowds, and so very ready to do it all again the next day.

Next: It’s time to light the lights!

I know – I’ve been slacking big-time with this report. All I can say is that I may have bitten off more than I can chew… between work, school issues for Leo and my own schoolwork, I just haven’t had the time I’d like to write this. I’m sorry. :guilty:

No guilt, we understand:hug:

The Great Piggybank Adventure was very cool and I highly recommend it!

I really want to do this one.

We bought Leo a Transformers/PowerRangers/Pokemon something or other in Japan,

I think between Leo, Michael and Jimmy we could probably open our ownTransformer/Power Rangers/Pokemons store. Did Leo see the Premier of the new incarnation Power Rangers on Monday? We had to have our bath early so we could watch:rolleyes1

Really, if there’s a heaven, I hope it’s catered by La Hacienda. :cloud9: This just might have knocked Tutto out of the top spot for our favorite WDW eatery and I can’t wait to go back again!

That is high praise coming from you especially about Tutto!:thumbsup2

ANother great update as usual V:goodvibes

Aw V, I personally think that does sound like a near perfect day. You got to soak up the magic with two people you love, without rushing, arguing, sweating, battling crowds or worrying about whatever it is we worry about. I love carefree WDW days! Don't you think Walt imagined them all that way, truly? :goodvibes

The Great Piggybank Adventure looks like a lot of fun. We will definitely have to try that. I also am not a risk taker and probably spend way more on vacation that I really should. La Hacienda sounds fabulous. Do they have some plain things like tacos and nachos for the less adventurous people in my household? ;)

Hi V!

 for the extra stress in your life right now, but :goodvibes for another wonderful update! It did sound like a great, close to perfect, Disney day! I always say I will relax more and not let myself get so hurried, stressed and rushed, but it never seems to happen and I'm always constantly thinking about what's happening next. That is one of my goals for my upcoming trip! *insert shameless plug for pre-tr here*

My niece and I did the piggybank adventure a couple years ago - can't remember what we bought, but I know I could never have afforded it in real life . If only saving money was that easy!

I LOVE me some Mexican food - even bad Mexican - and now I want to eat in Mexico! We are already booked at Via Napoli, which makes my mom very happy, but I will make a mental note for future visits!

Your day sounds perfect. I love your dinner review. I think it may have bumped that restaurant up in my ADR wish list.

Great update :thumbsup2

Now that's saying something.

Como say better than Tutto?

Book it, Danno! :thumbsup2

:rotfl2::rotfl2:

Great update. I smiled reading the whole thing and fell in love with that day, even though I wasn't there. We are headed to DW in two weeks, and have never seen the acrobat act:rolleyes1. Our plan has us at Epcot 2/28. Do you think this will be thier last day performing? Where can I get that info?

Also, I have my very first Le Cellier booked for that night and I am seriously considering changing it now. That food sounded scrumptious!

I really want to do this one.
It was fun, we all agreed! Which is saying a LOT. ;)
I think between Leo, Michael and Jimmy we could probably open our ownTransformer/Power Rangers/Pokemons store.
:rotfl2: So true!
Did Leo see the Premier of the new incarnation Power Rangers on Monday?
Nope - he conveniently knows nothing about it. :teeth:

I do! :cloud9:
La Hacienda sounds fabulous. Do they have some plain things like tacos and nachos for the less adventurous people in my household? ;)
Hmm, I wouldn't call anything on the menu (excepting the kids' portion) plain - everything is very, very flavorful, though not necessarily spicey. But you reminded me of something our server mentioned - they can adjust the heat to taste, so don't be afraid to ask for more or less spice! :thumbsup2

I always say I will relax more and not let myself get so hurried, stressed and rushed, but it never seems to happen and I'm always constantly thinking about what's happening next.
I know what you mean and I think it was easier this time around simply because I was tapped out, lol! I'd been so overwhelmed for so long, I just fell into relaxation mode effortlessly.
That is one of my goals for my upcoming trip! *insert shameless plug for pre-tr here*
Thanks for the shameless plug, or I'd never have known! I'll be over soon :thumbsup2
I LOVE me some Mexican food - even bad Mexican - and now I want to eat in Mexico! We are already booked at Via Napoli, which makes my mom very happy, but I will make a mental note for future visits!
Oh boy. I must say this: try to fit it in if you can!

Como say better than Tutto?

Book it, Danno! :thumbsup2
Maybe. I'm reserving official judgment until it's had a second run, but it's definitely a contender! Let's all try it together, shall we? :yay:

Your day sounds perfect. I love your dinner review. I think it may have bumped that restaurant up in my ADR wish list.
Oh, bump it, bump it - it's so worth it!

And....now I'm hungry. Think they deliver for breakfast? ;)
OMG, how I wish they did breakfast - I can't even imagine how yummy that might be!

You're not that far, so why not;)
She's right you know Kate - meet you there?! ;)

Great update. I smiled reading the whole thing and fell in love with that day, even though I wasn't there.
Aw thank you! :goodvibes

You know, I'm not really sure. You might post that on the Theme Park board to get a definitive answer, but I thought they were to be gone in Feb.
Also, I have my very first Le Cellier booked for that night and I am seriously considering changing it now. That food sounded scrumptious!
Oh, I'd totally go for La Hacienda over Le Cell, any day! (Can you tell I'm less than impressed with Le Cellier? I'd mark it as "okay", but hugely overpriced for a steak I can get at home. But I know others rave, so go with what sounds good to you!)

Granted, it wasn't the Disney ghluewine which may be better, but a neighbor of mine down the street (who lived in Germany for a while) makes it for a Christmas party every year and I'm not a fan.

I'm so glad to read your good review of La Hacienda! It's moving up on my list of places to try.

I'm so with you.

V that sounds absolutely wonderful :goodvibes Glad you had a fabulous meal too!

What's different about a Mexican brekkie? :rotfl2:

Hey V,

I have been remiss. I've been reading, but not posting, and now I can't possibly remember all that I wanted to comment on. WWOHP sounds amazing, and I definitely have to hit that at some point. Though I must admit that although my older son and I have read all the books (some twice), my younger one was never all that interested and my husband is clueless. Even more embarrassing, none of us has seen any of the movies after the first one :headache: I'm thinking we will have to plan a trip there, then we can have a marathon viewing party before we go. ;)

The only other thing that jumps out in my memory right now is the WERTHER'S SHOP.:cloud9: My new favorite place in all of WDW. I'm with ya on the pretzels. They are my #1 choice too. Though I haven't had the bravery to try an apple yet. When we were there a couple of weeks ago (Maelstrom Meet!), I used over $40 of my Disney Visa rewards to buy all kinds of stuff to share with my friends. The CM was actually laughing at me!

I totally spaced La Hacienda. Must check it out next time. We did, however, hit "The Ditch" for some bangin' Margaritas. Wow. Those things pack a punch!!

Sorry your life has been so frenetic. Hope things calm down for you soon! In the meantime, we'll keep waiting patiently for updates on your Disney adventures :thumbsup2

I am checking in late as usual.:goodvibes Now I need to go back and read.
Hi there! Thanks for coming along again!

Granted, it wasn't the Disney ghluewine which may be better, but a neighbor of mine down the street (who lived in Germany for a while) makes it for a Christmas party every year and I'm not a fan.
I think it's one of those things that will either be instant like or dislike - I'm frankly surprised that I like it, lol!
I'm so glad to read your good review of La Hacienda! It's moving up on my list of places to try.
:thumbsup2 I'm excited to go back!

Oh, and Kate - we should find a Mexican place near WDW for breakfast! :goodvibes
Cant' we just invade your DVC kitchen?! ;)

V that sounds absolutely wonderful :goodvibes Glad you had a fabulous meal too!
I really, really was! :goodvibes

I'm thinking we will have to plan a trip there, then we can have a marathon viewing party before we go. ;)
::yes:: We hadn't seen any of the movies, short of the most recent, in quite a while and I can't tell you how many times that day I said, "I wish we'd have done a HP movie marathon first!"

The only other thing that jumps out in my memory right now is the WERTHER'S SHOP.:cloud9: My new favorite place in all of WDW.
Right there with you sister! Leo and I went to EP this past Sunday... I may or may not have bought EVERY pretzel in the case to load up my fridge at home. :rotfl2:

When we were there a couple of weeks ago (Maelstrom Meet!)...
Oh, I forgot - how was it?! I'm glad you guys had a chance to reconvene :goodvibes

We did, however, hit "The Ditch" for some bangin' Margaritas. Wow. Those things pack a punch!!
Right?! :faint:

For the record, repeating the preceding “prefect” day was not my end-goal on our next-to-final day in Central Florida. Honestly, I had no expectations beyond leaving the condo at some point and getting to Hollywood Studios (oh, how it pains me to use that name! RIP MGM) in time for our dinner reservation.

I point this out because we’ve had poor luck with Hollywood Studios (HS) in the past. There was the trip in which we missed most of our HS plan thanks to multiple snafus with the Boardwalk Inn check-in debacle. There was the trip in which Gramma and Leo spent THREE hours in line for Toy Story Mania (I quit after an hour and half – ‘Go on without me!’). There was the trip in which I darn-near wound up prone on the floor with heat stroke at the Sci-Fi Dine-In. So, given our history, I chose to approach HS this time with almost no expectations of things going well. If we managed to eat and see some holiday lights, I was willing to call it a success.

In that frame of mind, I also planned for us not to rush anywhere first thing in the morning. We declared it a sleep-in morning the night before and set no alarms.

Not that we needed to – Leo was up by 8am anyway. Oh well.

Gramma, though, is a night-owl and really needed to catch up on some sleep, so Leo and I ate a leisurely breakfast and he vegged out with some TV while I got in a little yoga and a long shower. We walked a full garbage bag over to the dumpster, and played outside the condo for a bit. Around noon, we had leftovers for lunch and Gramma awoke and readied herself to head out.

It wasn’t an exciting morning, but it was a good morning. Just what we needed. :thumbsup2

It was also a gorgeous day! The sun was shining, the air was warming and it felt so nice to not need a jacket. So we decided to take advantage of the weather and do something outdoorsy, something new to all three of us…

We went mini-golfing!

We’ve seriously talked about mini-golfing at WDW for years, but this was the first time we actually tried it. We mini-golf a lot around home; we do, after all, live in a very touristy area, so we have a variety of fancy mini-golf establishments within 15 minutes of home. But we’d somehow never gotten around to giving the WDW mini-golf options a shot.

Leo likes a lot of silly obstacles in his mini-golf; the more ostentatious, the better. So we quickly settled on the Winter-Summerland location for the pure novelty of its designs. And, once there, the choice of the Winter course was an easy one, given the holiday theme, time of year and loop of fun holiday music playing.

5286395086_b8e6e780bf.jpg

I don’t want to give away the many surprises on the course, and, for that matter, I can’t really remember them all, but trust me when I say this: Get thee some mini-golf time on your next WDW trip! We had an absolute BLAST – the course was impeccably kept, the designs are hysterical and the challenge level was low enough that Leo did quite well, despite his complete refusal to actually look at the ball when he putts. Not, however, well enough to beat our winner… Gramma! She surprised us all by beating us by quite a bit. She was quite pleased with herself, but refused a celebratory picture.

After that, we headed over to HS and boarded the tram from the parking lot. I only mention this because we got one of the new trams. These have doors to keep people from falling out and they utterly confused both Gramma and me. After each of us struggled to open the stupid thing, Leo sighed, said “I got this,” and pulled it open with a mere flick of his little wrist. Oh yes, the new doors are most childproof.

Amazingly, we had some time to kill before dinner and wait times weren’t horrific for several attractions. We chose the Backlot Tour, because we haven’t done it in a while and Leo’s recently become very interesting in filmmaking. Gramma didn’t care either way, and I – I had the Good Camera, so I was all for some action sequences shot fast!

I think we took in the Not So Great Movie Ride, too. It’s hard to remember that one. ;)

And then, it was time. Time for this lovely:

5286413106_e4ee4c5583.jpg

I’ll own it: I’m a martini snob. I’d just as soon not have one at all if it’s not prepared just right. Which makes the Hollywood Brown Derby one of my favorite spots in WDW. (Sadly, we haven’t been there much in recent years; it just never fit into our plans well. But I had lunch there with the gang on our big summer trip and was reminded how good the food and service were; I made sure we were booked for dinner on our Dec. HS night.) Anyway, the Brown Derby knows how to make a martini; theirs is about the best I’ve ever had! Dry, crisp, no taste of weird old ice residue, blue cheese-stuffed olives – three of them – shaken and poured right there in front of me, into an appropriately-sized, chilled glass (ENOUGH with these fish bowls people are calling “martini glasses”!) Mmmmmmm.

As for dinner, well, um….. hmm. Y’know, I can’t remember just what I ate, lol! I think it might have been the grouper…but I really like the tofu noodle bowl, so it could have been that. I do recall whatever it was being delicious, though! Gramma, I know, had the Cobb Salad. Leo? Who knows. Some kids’ meal; same old story. ;)

We took our time eating, and lingered for a bit, talking over coffee. Much as the rest of day had been, it was a relaxed affair; we were in no rush to get anywhere.

Continued in next post...

When we finally decided to leave, we made our ways over to our only real purpose for HS in December – the Osborne Lights!

I’ve been seeing the Osborne Lights since the first year they came to WDW, before Leo was born. And I do believe Leo has seen them every year of his life, even the years we didn’t do a “real” Disney trip in Dec. To say it’s a tradition for us would be a huge understatement; the Osborne Lights are an integral component of our holiday festivities and Christmas just would not be the same for us without them!

And now, here we are at 2010…

5285901349_bb8033fdf2.jpg

What makes the Osborne Lights so much fun? Well, for starters, there are just so darn many of them! All of the streetscapes are covered in little lights. Also, they “dance.” Holiday music plays the entire time, but every 15 minutes or do, the Trans Siberian Orchestra starts up with some rockin’ holiday tunes and the lights begin flashing on and off in sync with the music. It’s pretty neat. Also, there’s hot cocoa, and wine and glazed almonds to snack on. And snow. Fake snow, but realistic enough for this former northerner to feel right at home.

I’ve often seen it asked on the DIS – but, what do you do at the Osborne Lights? Well, we wander up and down the main and side streets. We sing along with the music. We point out funny details. We sip hot cocoa and sometimes we dance. And we laugh. My, how we laugh!

This year, I was armed with the good Camera, so while I took the usual Osborne Lights shots, I also tried my hand at some artsy stuff…

My favorite :goodvibes …

Gramma took over and captured a couple of great shots of Leo and me – which is HUGELY appreciated, because I’m usually behind the camera!

And one more before we left the lights behind us…

We were still feeling pretty awake at that point and had no need for an early start the next morning, so we indulged Leo and took in the Magic of Animation. Yes, he loves this attraction, though only for the little movie. We talked him into trying the animation class, though, which wasn’t a huge success… Leo got frustrated with his imperfection and I was seated next to a young boy with what I assumed to be the plague. Plague-boy was a cougher and saw no reason to cover his mouth. Yuck!

Still, I made a decent little Chip. Or Dale. I forget.

And then we called it a night.

Amazingly, I think that day really was as perfect as its predecessor! Despite a very relaxed pace and mindset, we actually did quite a bit and didn’t feel at all as if we’d missed out on anything. In my estimation, that’s a Disney day done right. Which is absolutely the best way to end a Disney trip, right? :goodvibes

Next: WAIT! It’s not over yet… we’re going back for more!

WHAT??!! What do you mean "CONTINUE: SAVE"?? You can't do that to me!! Ugh!

ETA: Ohhhh. Okay. Got it.

Ok this last one has me soooo giddy, I can't freakin' wait! I can't wait to have dinner at BD and I can't wait to drink a "real" martini (I'm so with you on that one!) and I can't WAIT to see the lights!! Oh those beautiful lights!!
