I'm thinking about buying a new TV.
Do I need an HDMI cable if I don't subscribe to any HD Channels?

Thanks :thumbsup2

Buy your HDMI cables from here: http://www.monoprice.com/home/index.asp

No reason to pay big money for them from places like Best Buy, HH Gregg, etc.

HDMI is not necessary, but it will give you the best picture.

I agree, I got a HDMI for our TV and for our WII there for LESS then one HDMI for the tv costs at any store. My order was at my house in just a couple days too.

Thanks! :thumbsup2 Those are waaay better than the $50+ I was looking at before - seemed to much $$$ to pay for something that I didn't think was required.

Even if you have HD service, it is debateable whether you need HDMI. Most folks feel that there is no appreciable difference between HDMI and component video.

I have never paid more than $6 (shipping included) for an HDMI cable. The ones for over $100 are a joke. They are pure profit for the company.

And I would recommend component over the crappy yellow composite video connection. It always amazes me when I see a TV display (usually running a DVD) and they have it hooked to a composite connection. It's like they don't want to sell those TV's because you can see the inferior picture.

I would use HDMI as opposed to component and the necessary audio cables, one cable in place of five. And Monoprice is excellent...price, quality and service. :thumbsup2

Definitely:

1. HDMI (single, typically black cable, carrying both audio and video) and Component Video (three cables, blue, green and red; typically along with separate audio cable(s)) are the best, suitable for use with HD.

2. S-video (single black cable, with a complex little circular connector, with a bunch of conductors in it) is second-best. It cannot handle HD, but it can at least keep things that are wide-screen as wide-screen. It is actually pretty difficult to tell the difference between HDMI/component video and S-video, at screen sizes smaller than 20".

3. Composite (single yellow cable) is much worse than S-video, at all screen sizes.

4. RF (single coaxial cable, where you would tune your display to channel 3 or 4 to view) is much worse than composite.
