Okay, I am planning our first cruise and I am wondering for the formal night how many people actually wear Tuxedos? A close friend who cruises quite often told me everyone just wear suits now (which I have plenty of). If many people do still wear the tux's I am going to buy one as I plan on becoming a regular visitor to the ships :D

I don't know about other cruise lines, but on the 2 Disney cruises we were saw about less than 20% of the men in formal attire. Most men opted for suits.

I agree. Suit over tux.

It's just a matter of choice. I am going to rent a tux that comes with both a white and black jacket. I will wear the complete outfit for the formal dinner and the opposite jacket minus the cumberbun to the semi formal dinner:Pinkbounc :bounce: :Pinkbounc :bounce:

You'll be just fine with a suit. - Mike

I wore a tux on formal night and then again the night we were at Palo on our Western cruise last October. On formal night I observed that most wear a suit some wear polo shirts the others wear a tux. At Palo I would say half wore suits the other half a tuxedo.

I decided to wear a tux because my wife asked me to. I don't have a need for a tux at home so thought this would be a change of pace and I'll be happy to do it again on the Eastern we have reserved this November.

Whatever you decide...you definitely will fit in.

Have fun on your first cruise. Be prepared to get addicted to cruising.

you'll be fine either way, as long as you don't show up to dinner in cutoffs and flip flops ;)
personally, DH and I do not get to dress up that often, so on our first cruise, he bought a tux from Gingiss at the end of prom season, when they sell off their stuff. For the tux, 2 shirts, 2 vests/ties, cufflinks and studs, we paid $200, which will pay for itself when he wears it again on this cruise!

My DH, DS and DDad all wore tuxes and they looked soooo handsome! The pictures we had taken that night are priceless to me. We bought all of the tuxes on eBay for less than $100 each (less than $50 for DS's), including the shirt, bowtie, cummerbund and shipping, and they were well worth the $$$. If you do decide to go with the tux I would definitely suggest checking eBay. DDad's tux is a Ralph Lauren that is absolutely gorgeous and DH's and DS's are equally nice.

A suit is more than acceptable, but tuxes are just so special.

Rideengineer, join the club as my DH is buying a tux since we're planning to cruise regularly for our vacations now. Even though the majority wear suits, I think most wives/girlfriends will agree w/me that a tux really makes their husbands stand out (in a positive way of course!)

I asked my DH since we're celebrating our 15th anniversary on our next DCL trip, would he please wear a tux? He saw the rental prices and said 'to heck w/that..I'll just BUY one!'

Gee! Okay!:D

There were more suits on our cruise in Feb.

A little advice from me. For the amount of time we actually spent dressed up, I am glad we saved the money we would have spent on rentals.

This may have been the case at Palo on formal night or semi-formal night.

However, Palo is not an "every night is formal" restaurant. On regular nights, jackets are appropriate. That can just as easily be a sport jacket without a tie.

I'm not saying that people shouldn't wear a tux to Palo on a regular night. It's a dressy place, so dress up as much as you wish.

Once again - personal comfort!!!

We opted for suit for the comfort, but we considered renting a tux for less in our suitcase! I still haven't learned that "pack less" mantra, but I'm trying

Maybe I am young albeit old-fashioned, but I am a firm believer in the three-piece tux. A vest and bowtie look way classic, but still modern.

I hope I am not the only one!

If you feel like you will really be getting into this cruising thing and you think you will be cruising on other lines (Celebrity, HAL, NCL, etc) then you might want to consider buying the tux (I can't believe I said that - you know me - shirt, tie, slacks and sandals is what I wear to formal/semi formal nights). The other cruise lines are much more formal at dinners than DCL is.

Actually, for 7-night cruises, DCL encourages the same standards of dinner attire as other mid-market cruise lines, such as Celebrity. One formal night, one semi-formal night, one tropical night, and four resort casual nights are pretty common on 7-night Caribbean cruises.

The vast majority of DCL passengers dress in the spirit of those recommendations. But there are some who seem clueless.

By the way, a tuxedo or a dark business suit are both completelty proper as formal attire. And I don't see anything wrong with those who choose to wear something like a dress shirt, tie, and blazer instead. But I'm disappointed by those who make no effort at all.
