My husband is an electronics freak, and recently purchased the TV he had been drooling over for 2 years. He also purchased some super expensive power strip to go with the TV and surround sound system, which he turns off every night before going to bed. Apparently, besides emitting some major heat, our new flat TV sucks up some major electricity. I usually shut-down my laptop every night, but I do not turn off the power strip because the broadband modem, router, and printer are all plugged into it as well, and we would have to re-set everything. However, no one else in my family has any excuse for not powering their electronics down and turning the power strip off; they just don't do it. If it makes any difference, my husband says that the "old" fat computer moniters functioned better if left on, but the newer moniters do not, and they emit a lot more heat. I can't imagine that shutting off the power strip would harm your electronics in any way, as long as you have powered down/turned off the electronic equipment first. To be safe, check with your electronics manufacturer. And to anyone NOT using a surge protector...you are taking a big risk with your electronic equipment. We recently had to replace a few of our surge protectors(but no computers) when we had a major electrical issue(a power line had become ensnared in a tree, causing the loss of "ground"). A good surge protector/power strip is well worth the investment.
