We tried the turkey legs. They tasted too much like ham, so we won't be getting them again. We like turkey that taste like turkey.

Boy, that really blows the "tastes just like chicken" line right out of the water~

Thanks for the heads up. I've been dying to try the turkey legs, but having been raised in a Kosher home, I do not tend to like the taste of ham.

Just a poultry kind of girl.....

The reason is because the meat is smoked. So it does not taste like Turkey we make in the oven.

I had one from Universal and it was good.

It does taste like Turkey.
It tastes like Turkey should, when it is smoked.
I guess the problem is most people are used to baked turkey, and smoked ham. . . .so our brain says "ham" when anything is smoked.

Was just at Disney and my husband and two other friends said the turkey legs tasted like ham. He was very disappointed in it.

Wow ... Goes to show how opinions differ on the turkey legs. We love them BECAUSE they taste like ham. DH puts mustard on his and is in heaven. I don't like the taste of dark poultry meat, but I love those smoked turkey legs.

I don't much like smoked ham (except in very small quantities) - yet I love the turkey legs. I personally don't think the turkey legs taste like ham.

Restaurant for Thanksgiving [you had to drop it off fresh and then pick it up Thanksgiving morning]. It was sooooo good. I'll have to try this. But I do not eat Pork so I'll make DH try it first! ;o)

i usually like smoked meat and i love turkey but the t.legs (at epcot at least) were greasy and imo not good. they tasted like cheap water injected turkey ham to me too! won't make that mistake again;)

that's cause they're not really turkey at all. They're emu legs, that's why it tastes like ham.

The turkey legs are smoked and that is why they taste like "ham"...lol! If that makes sense.

Our family loves to eat them, I have a pic from years ago of my daughter, then probably about 4 or 5 and she is eating the turkey leg. It was bigger than her, but she ate the whole darned thing.
:earsgirl:

It was funny, we were in MGM for hours and all I could smell was ham. Took me forever tell I actually saw why I was smelling it (thought I was giong crazy fro a bit there). My father ended up buying one. I always tell people abuot it; if it smells like ham, looks like ham, and tastes like ham, it must be turkey!

Savin4Disney, I have read that there are turkey carts all over the Disney parks. Where did you find the legs in Universal?

we love them too!

i saw a special on "unwrapped" on the food channel when they did all disney food. they showed how they make the turkey legs. they are injected with seasoning, marinated for 24 hours, then smoked for a long time (forget how long they said). they said that although many people think that they are emu legs, they really are turkey legs. they get them from a turkey farm in the northern US. those turkeys get up to 70lbs each, that is why the legs are so big.

but it is true that smoked (turkey, ham, chicken, etc) all have similar flavors. that is why you may think that it is ham.

here is a pic of my husband and my brother playing checkers and chomping away on their turkey. (they moved the stands last time we were there, but are still close by the stand in mk)

I saw that special too! And we LOVE the legs! Can't wait to go back and get one, that is if I have enough room left after eating on the dining plan

I am back and forth now on whether to get one. It was one of the things on my to do, but with all the negative remarks I just about decide against it until I read good reports. I need to make up my mind soon! :(

Well, I like ham and other smoked meats, (even turkey) but I still do not like the turkey legs at WDW. I think it must be the injected marinade that I don't care for. (?) I would love it if they offered "regular" turkey legs that taste like roasted turkey--then I would be in heaven!

Also, the legs seem kind of tough to me. I can't imagine eating one with my teeth. When I have gotten one I always had to try to eat it with my fingers or utensils and still couldn't get the meat off. If it is really smoked for such a long time, why isn't the meat "falling off the bone"? I don't know, I want to like them, and I have had one once or twice at the local zoo which were better, but the ones I had at WDW were kinda nasty.
