Turkey Legs

ummm.... did anyone really think it was emu? i thought it was just a laugh! :)

btw, i loooooooooove emu! :)

I agree with the thoughts on the leftover turkey parts. Why is it hard to figure where the rest of the turkey went? Turkey bologna, turkey ham, turkey roasts (shaped like a meat loaf), turkey nuggets, ground turkey. My goodness, you can get turkey in every shape and form. Now, if it were emu, where is the rest of the emu? There would be A LOT more emu to use. And I agree that food cannot be labeled anything other than what it is. Also, why think emu would cost any less than turkey?

Furthermore, just because you don't see the whopper turkeys in your store doesn't mean they are geneticlly altered. My husband and I are poultry farmers. We raise chickens, not turkeys, but it is all done on the same principle. If you go to a store and purchase a whole chicken to cook, it will weigh around 3 lbs. Our broilers (chickens) are between 6-7 lbs because they are grown for parts - they are used for chicken nuggets, chicken sandwiches, breast fillets, etc. In other words, they are not putting the really huge turkeys in the store freezer because most likely no one would buy them. Instead, they are selling the legs to WDW and using the other parts for other items.

Now, how do we get them larger? We keep them longer. To get a 3-4 lb chicken, you raise it 6 weeks, to get a 6-7 lb chicken, you raise it 8 weeks. It is so simple, isn't it?

Man, just when I thought it was safe to check this board again this silly emu thing raises it head again (or maybe it stuck it's head in the sand!).

LOL, EpcotMom!

Emu meat is like ostrich meat. It's a red meat, like beef and venison.

(It's so funny that people hold on to these weird rumors like emu legs and wives' tales like shaving your hair and it growing back thicker and darker. I wonder why people do this?)

Thats why his office was moved here. He will have an Emu-tional welcome. As far as these Emu rumors.....Everyone...look at the flashy thingy...
Now, what were you saying?????????

;) ;) ;)

"wives' tales like shaving your hair and it growing back thicker and darker"

that one's true, but only on body hair, not on the hair that's on your head. :)

:p Okay- again... Jennie-o supplies the turkey legs and the rest of the turkey is made into lunch meat. I told you I knew first hand- hello I used to serve them and work in the kitchen's at Epcot. It is so funny that people even remotely believe that it is anything else.

This has been a lot of fun!

LOL...whoever going to WDW and sees Walt and Mickey walk out...make sure to report on how it was...wish I could see!!!
Emus are cool...dont go dissin' the emus!!! :D

Hyuck, Hyuck: you guys really had me going for a minute......now I know that the turkey legs really ARE emu legs. If you hadn't protested so much, I would have thought that they were turkey, but NOW I know better. By the way, We're going to WDW in Dec. Is that when Walt will walk out of the castle? I'd love to get a picture of that, maybe even with my wife and kids in the shot. Does anyone know the best spot to see this? I'd be willing to get there early too.

caity caity, the hair growing back darker is indeed a wives' tale, no matter where the hair is: I shaved the hair on my right arm after I had a cast on it (the hair had gotten nasty-looking because of clogged pores) and it grew back so it matched my left arm!

:D

A little off topic...

I was in MK for E-ride night and just after the park closed for day guests, the CM's at the place near Astro Orbiters were loading up the heated case with fresh turkey legs. There must have been 50 of them in there. When we went back for a drink three hours later, most of them were still in there! If they threw them out: what a waste! If they served them the next day: YUCK!
Either way, I'm not going near those things. I think "salmonella on a stick" described it best...
