I put this in budge but I thought I would put it here to for help. we bought turbotax to do our taxes last year. I want to use it again this year and updated everything per the download like it said - and it said all updates were installed. but all of the questions still say 2004 and not 2005 - does this change in the final section, i.e. the printout of the form? and if not, what am I doing wrong?

Did you accidentally click on the TT 2004 program icon? I know on our desktop (mostly out of laziness  ) we still have icons for past year's TT versions.

I don't think so, I think I went under "programs" on the control bar and it was there.

I was under the impression that you needed to buy the new version every year. I just picked up and installed the 2005 version last week.

It said I needed the 2005 updates so I connected and got them. I then copied my 2004 tax information over to my 2005 tax information.

I like how it has a column for both 2004 and 2005 data.

Good luck.

Charlie might be onto something -- did you download the new version (e.g. 2005 version) of TurboTax or just download the updates to the 2004 version?

Did you get charged anything for the download? If not, then you didn't download the 2005 program itself. :)

I was under the impression when I bought it last year that I could update it each year for just a little more.

where would I get it to download it?

You can just go to the website www.turbotax.com and do all of your work there....then you pay for e-filing only.

Good luck!

I do this as well. Using the website, there's never a confusion about software versions, etc.

But turbotax does cost the same as the software. You can choose to have part of your refund pay the cost or pay it directly with a credit card. What's free is the e-filing.

I used turbotax.com for my federal and state taxes, and I have some fairly complicated taxes (Schedule K-1 forms to enter, etc.), yet turbotax.com made pretty easy work of it all, and even asked me on the Kentucky side of my questions if I had subtractions to take from my federal tax liability (the aforementioned K-1 form), which it didn't do in the past. It gets a little better every year.

You should be able to download it on the website, or buy a copy in the stores (e.g. Best Buy, Staples, etc.). That, or like others suggested, use the online version (although that won't pull over data from 2004).

I'm not sure this is true. I've used the online version for 3 years now, including 2005. It has pulled the data from each year to the next since I've been using the website, as long as I use the same login credentials as the previous year. It shows me the amounts for last year and this year, as well as pulls my personal info and confirms it for this year.

Now, as to whether the online version would pull info from your 2004 taxes that you filed with the software, I'm not sure about that. However, I would not be surprised if it has some way to do this with some sort of upload feature if you still have the old version installed. I do seem to recall that the first year I used the online version, it somehow got my personal info for me so I didn't have to type it all in. It may have been keyed on my SS number. I don't recall having to enter all that information in. But I don't recall being able to see the previous year's amounts the first year I used the online version, but then I'm not sure any version of turbotax had that feature back then.
