There is taxact.com, taxslayer and turbotax has a free option if you only need to do a 1040ez. I just used it for my nephew's taxes the other day. I used taxact last year. You have to pay for state taxes, though.
Our insurance company gave us free access to Turbo Tax one year other then that we have always paid. It is $35 for the Deluxe version (CD/downloadable) but that comes with 5 free federal e-files too as well as a State version (but you have to pay for a state e-file).
If you make under a certain amount of income, you can use the online version of Turbo Tax for free. You can also get a free e-file on your federal return (you have to pay for state).
Since my daughter makes so little, she filled out her taxes on the free on-line edition. My version of the software only comes with one free federal e-file.
I use the free version of Taxact. We file a 1040, schedule A, schedule C, schedule 8829 and the forms for education expenses that we paid for DD#2. It always asks if I want to upgrade and pay but I never have. We file our state (IL) on our state's website for free otherwise Taxact charges for the state returns.
