A TSUNAMI WATCH IS ISSUED FOR THE STATE OF HAWAII EFFECTIVE AT
0805 AM HST.

AN EARTHQUAKE HAS OCCURRED WITH THESE PRELIMINARY PARAMETERS

ORIGIN TIME - 0748 AM HST 29 SEP 2009
COORDINATES - 15.3 SOUTH 171.0 WEST
LOCATION - SAMOA ISLANDS REGION
MAGNITUDE - 7.9 MOMENT

EVALUATION

BASED ON ALL AVAILABLE DATA A TSUNAMI MAY HAVE BEEN GENERATED BY
THIS EARTHQUAKE THAT COULD BE DESTRUCTIVE ON COASTAL AREAS EVEN
FAR FROM THE EPICENTER. AN INVESTIGATION IS UNDERWAY TO DETERMINE
IF THERE IS A TSUNAMI THREAT TO HAWAII.

It must be so scary to live in Hawaii when something like this happens. When my mom lived in Hawaii, they had a hurricane, and then rolling blackouts for several days afterwards. You're basically stuck out there with nowhere else to go.

The earthquake has been updated to an 8.3 and the tsunami looks as if it's headed to New Zealand, rather than Hawaii. There's a girl that I graduated from high school with who now lives in New Zealand, so I'm really hoping we've seen the worst of it and that it won't hit New Zealand too hard.
