Tsunami Warning for Hawaii. Hilton Waikaloa Village web cam

I think Fox News said they may be tapping into a web cam when the time comes.

Thanks for the link, Dawn! It'll be interesting to keep an eye on the cam to see how it rolls in.

Are they expecting lots of problems on that side of the island, or will it be more of a Hilo issue?

From what I understand, it won't matter which side of the island you are on.

How spooky is this?

I posted a link to live Hawaiian coverage on the other thread. They said that there were traffic jams at elevated areas as people gather to watch for the tsunami. It's all so strange.

Fox is showing pics every now and then. The water looks so calm. I guess the calm before the storm

That's what I think too.

I read that Hilo area would be the part of the island affected. Hilo is towards the northern part of the island. The Hilton Waikoloa Village is in the southern part of the island (we stayed there on our trip to Hawaii in December 07/January 08).

Thanks - I just went and checked myself and also found the word was they are expecting wrap around.

I wasn't watching any news this morning, so I'm coming late into this info despite my brother living in Hawaii. I just talked to him and he canceled his charter this morning and has moved his boat to higher ground. From his shop sitting well above the harbor he can see the boats that have all moved out far enough off shore to ride it out. The water gets deep quickly so it should be pretty smooth out there.

I was looking for webcams showing the highways/streets to see if people are jamming the roads to get out, but couldn't find any.

That cause they are all watching it. Fox is showing lots of people just standing watch for it to come in

I've been down with a terrible sinus infection so haven't paid attention to the news. When is this supposed to hit?

Now! They say there's some ocean receding now and ocean discoloration, which is supposed to be a sign.

One of the best understated attractions on the Big Island, is the Pacific Tsunami Museum in Hilo. It is located in a former bank; one of the few structures that survived the last tsunami to hit Hilo in which 65 people died. It stood standing because of the structure of the bank; in the front big windows, out the back. The "doyenne" that escorted us through the museum, was very enthusiastic about her job. She was such a good guide that I said to her; "Where were you when the tsunami hit?" I could tell that she had been a part of it. She was on the school bus, on her way to school when her brother looked out of the bus window and said, "Look, the water went away". There were people in Hilo Bay picking up flopping fish, shells, etc. Her bus driver immediately took note and fled to higher ground. She didn't even get her feet wet, but people died in that 1946 tsunami. The Pacific Tsunami Museum is very active in tsunami education. They have long felt that they were overdue for the next tsunami and they want everyone to be prepared. If you are ever on the Big Island, visit the museum in downtown Hilo. http://www.tsunami.org/

We went a couple of years ago. It was fascinating, especially after the recent tsumanis. My pre-teens at the time were really interested.
