TSA Question

We are leaving tomorrow and of course DS gets sick right before the trip. Had him to the doc this morning and he has a cold and an ear infection. The doctor gave me chewable antibiotics to make it easier for us on the trip but also gave us ear drops to the numb the ear pain. He told me to keep the drops with me on the plane and to make sure I also had children's motrin or tylenol as well. I know you can take prescription meds thru TSA but what about the motrin - I'm pretty sure the bottle exceeds the 3.4 oz limit - will I have any problems with this? Do I just tell the TSA person that I have this liquid meds before I put the carryon throught the xray machine?

Since the motrin is not a perscription, I'd go out and buy a small bottle and not worry about it. If you can't get a smaller bottle, then pour some into a small container and check the rest.

Both prescription and OTC medicine are excempt from the 3.4oz rule. Just keep them in their own ziplock and "declare" them to the agent.

Here is what it says about OTC medicine:

"Declare larger liquids. Medications, baby formula and food, and breast milk are allowed in reasonable quantities exceeding three ounces and are not required to be in the zip-top bag. Declare these items for inspection at the checkpoint."

Sounds like a pretty sick kid, though. Are you sure you want to take him into a plane, where you will have a difficult time with a sick kid, where DS is going to have a hard time with ear pressure and just not feeling well, and where other passengers are going to be fairly annoyed with you for bringing an actively sick person into their airspace?

I once read a great idea from a pilot's wife about bringing earplugs for fellow passengers, when bringing a baby on board...you might consider bringing a big box of facemasks on board for the fellow passengers...just for a bit of a barrier from a sick person.

He's really not very sick - but he's had ear issues since birth - his 2nd set of tubes fell out a few months back and we're just waiting to see if he needs another set. So anytime he has any ear pain we take him in ASAP. I have a pair of child sized earplanes for him plus the doc gave us the drops which will numb his ear so he won't feel any pain on the plane ride so I think he'll be fine. I did ask his doctor if we should postpone and he said there was no reason whatsoever that we shouldn't go. He thinks the ear will clear up in a day or so and we'll take him to his ENT when we get back.

DH and I have constant issues with sinuses and ear pain. Our doc recommended taking an antihistamine (we like Sudafed Cold & Sinus) about an hour before the plane ride begins, which helps immensely with the congestion and ear popping affect we typically get. I wonder if that would help?
Have a great trip, hopefully the sickness doesn't put too much of a damper on it.
