TSA Locks

Quick question for all of you who fly to the USA do you use TSA combo locks or ordinary locks?

Thanks in advance :)

We use them also. Last year when we flew back from the US we found a letter in one of our cases saying it had been opened for inspection. If we had got ordinary locks they would have had to break either them or the case so they were a good investment.

I have always used TSA locks but on our last trip they were still ripped off my luggage, breaking off the zip! Was not happy about that!

I think on our next trip we wont bother with locks. Just make sure anything of high value is in your cabin luggage. If someone wants to steal your stuff, a little padlock is not going to stop them!

That's true if they want to get in they will but i suppose for ease of checking the luggage the TSA locks make sense, i'm also trying to cover all basis as i've not been out of the UK for about 10 years  and would like it to go as smooth as pos :) (famous last worlds!)

We always use TSA locks also and, twice now, have had them just ripped off the luggage, breaking the zips. It really annoys me since the whole purpose of them is supposed to be so that the TSA don't have to do that.

That's not on did you complain?

we don't bother with locks anymore because the same has happened to us on a couple of occasions and the cases have been useless there after. I would say that every other trip our cases are checked as we always find that sheet of paper in them. Nowadays locks aren't really a deterrent as if somebody wants to get in your cases they just do very simply. At least if they are going to check your cases in MCO, if you don't have locks you will have a working case when you get home and not one that is wrapped in plastic.:)

Never use locks, if anyone wants to get in they will. If locked IMO they cause more damage, as shown break locks, zips etc.
We just don't put anything of great value in, they are welcome to my dirty laundry. :goodvibes

This. What's worth locking? If someone wants to rifle through my clothes, go for it. Anything of any value - monetary or sentimental - will be with me at all times.

I used a TSA lock on my case last year and it was not until I got home I noticed it was gone and I had one of those slips of paper in my case telling me it had been opened. You would think that I would not bother with a lock considering every trip I have come home to a note in my case.

As the pps have said if people wanted into your case they will get in regardless.

Its a rule of thumb for me to not put anything into your checked bag that is of value.

I can't understand why it says on the lock that its TSA approved yet they still seem to be unable to open them with out breaking the lock or damaging the case.

We were unaware of TSA locks on our 2010 trip so just used cheap luggage locks. It wasnt until we unpacked at home to find the slip of paper saying the case has been inspected that we knew it had even been opened. They had unlocked and re locked the padlock that was on the case.

They probably find the cheap little padlock easier to open than the TSA approved expensive ones:confused3

Cheap padlocks are very easy to open, so are the combination locks I can open them within a few seconds.

I don't use locks for keeping people out of my bags, I use them to keep them closed. I had one time a zipper that had the tendency to slide all by itself :scared1: and suitcases are handled pretty roughly. It's just a precaution, it's not a "security" measure

If that were the case, I'd use some cheap cable ties.

Only ever had one lock bust by tsa, but since we started using the approved tsa ones we've never had a problem. Althugh i agree that they're not really for security but to keep the zips closed.

Another excuse to buy too much and cram it in :rotfl2:

Me too .. just using the TSA ones mean the TSA dudes can open them if they need to .. bargain at Asda's too at about £5 for a pair ..

I even use them to keep my bag shut when I go to conferences and DLP - just useful little things
