Trying to talk DH into buying.

I really liked the Poly and my DH really likes WL, so we could share time between the two.

One word of caution. DVC points are not a good value to use at non-DVC resorts. Currently there is no DVC at the Poly and it's very point expensive to stay there. Much more point expensive than staying at a DVC property.

My suggestion is to only buy DVC if you are planning to stay at DVC resorts most of the time.

I checked into that and the points needed are waaaaaaay too many. If I only get 50 points on extended stays I could get the best of both worlds. I like WL and it's my DH fav resort. My fav is Poly but he liked that one too. So we could use points for WLV and cash for Poly. On shorter stays we would just use points for WLV.

Another poster asked if I was a planner and that is a great big yes, I obsess over planning. We went on our last trip 10/19/11-10/21/11, before we even went on this trip I already had our next trip planned. I only have to wait for the park hours to come out so I know when to schedule our dinning. Narcoossee's is our fav so I like to book this during wishes.

I've read alot, made some calls, and asked some questions and I'm totally in love with the idea. Thanks everyone for their input, it has helped so much.

Is there a site that lists the points required to stay at NON DVC Resorts, such as the one that you referenced? I'm on the outside looking in, and it is hard to determine if I should/could use my points at other resorts nation wide (as is my intention).

DVCNews.com has a lot of useful information.
Here's a link to their Disney collection point charts.
http://dvcnews.com/index.php/dvc-program/points-charts/non-dvc-destinations

If you compare it to DVC resort point charts, you will see why most recommend only using points at DVC destinations.

When DW and I joined, we decided we would rather rent our points than go through the exchange system for non-DVC locations. Cash offers more flexibility and a better bang for the buck. (We've never rented our DVC points, but I think people are getting $10-$11/pt).

. . . it is hard to determine if I should/could use my points at other resorts nation wide (as is my intention).

If you are considering resale, then that will already be determined for you as you won't be able to use those points for the non-DVC resorts or cruises anyway. Most people think it's a bad use of points so you may not be missing much, but others like the flexibility.

Be careful how you word things. Resale points can't be used for non-DVC DISNEY resorts or cruises, but they can be used for RCI exchanges and some of the other non-Disney hotels, etc.

As others have said, some of those are not great values, but some of the options are gone, some are still there.

Also, it's also important to remember that NONE of these things are guaranteed to any DVC owner, regardless of how they purchase. The ability to book at non-DVC Disney resorts could be taken away from direct purchasers with a stroke of a pen.

Yes, I agree we should be careful how we word things so here is the full listing of the exemptions from the TTS's website:

The real estate interest (Membership) that you purchase through The Timeshare Store, Inc.® will not be eligible to use those Vacation Points to make reservations within the Concierge Collection, the Disney Collection or the Adventurer Collection. Those Vacation Points will instead be valid for reservations at Disney Vacation Club resorts, as well as for the RCI® exchanges, Club Cordial and Club Intrawest.
