I'm new at this so ... here goes.

Say you have 300 points and you decide to make reservations at your home resort. You give them the dates and you account has the points in it so they "hold those points" or something like that ... right? What if you decide to change your dates and take off a date ... do you lose those points or do they just deposit them back into your account?

What would happen if you rented points out to someone and they changed their date taking off a date ... would you then be able to put those points back into your account?

I know all this depends on availability but am just checking to see how it all works so I really understand it.

Thanks for your patience!

Sort of, though they don't "hold" points. If you make a reservation, you have used your points to do so. In this case, you can make a reservation for up to 300 points a year if you own 300 points.

Assuming you cancel any part or all of your reservation more than 30 days before your check in date, the points are returned to your account and you have the rest of your use year to use them. You can also choose to bank them if you are within your banking window.

You really never "rent points" out to someone...it's a poor choice of words that for some unfortunate reason has stuck. What you are really doing is making a reservation using your own points and selling that reservation to someone else. Because it is your reservation (even if you sell it), if any or all of the reservation is cancelled your points are treated the same as described above.

I know all this depends on availability but am just checking to see how it all works so I really understand it.

Please be sure to ask a lot of questions and read these boards a lot before buying. From your post I'd say that it appears that you don't have a full grasp of how the points work. I think it is important to know what your membership can do for you as well as its limitations. You're doing well to ask the questions and make yourself an informed prospective buyer. Good luck! :)

Maybe, maybe not. If you were the owner of the points, you could tell the non-owner who rented the reservation that no cancelations or changes would be accepted. It was final. You might be able to put points back into the current year, but if you couldn't use them and were beyond the banking deadlines, those points could be worthless.

I will give you a look from the other side. we rented points and went in January 2007. We had made a reservation way back in June 2006 for May 2007 and then in October 2006 I found out I was pregnant. We asked to change our dates to January. January is a cheaper time period. I never would have asked for the money back as that was our original contract. It was our fault and our reservation. But what she did do for us was ask if we wanted to go to a bigger room for part of our stay. This helped us get more for our money.

If things change it is the renters problem and not yours. You are not obligated to give back money. But it was nice that the lady we worked with gave us an option to give us more for our money.
