Trying to figure out SCAL

I have read about SCAL and Inkscape. I downloaded Inkscape and it has me  . It is a bit more complicated than I had hoped. All I really want to do is to use the hundreds of great fonts I already have on my computer. I want to be able to connect them and make them different sizes, maybe cut them in a half circle or "wavy" design.

Do I need to use Inkscape for that or does the SCAL software does that? I kind of got the impression that the Inkscape is really for if I want to do more intricate drawings? I just want to make great titles with all the fonts I already have and love.

You don't need to use Inkscape to weld fonts in SCAL. Do you have SCAL 1 or 2? Directions depend on your version. Let me know and I'd be happy to help!

I don't have it yet--- I would be getting 2 obviously.

I had looked into it a few months ago and downloaded Inkscape and just was overwhelmed by it. I looked again last night at the new version and it seemed like I can probably do all I need without worrying about learning to use InkScape.

Hubby wants me to be sure that I can figure out how to use the program for what I want before I buy it.

I have so many fonts that I really don't think I need very many actual Cricut carts, if I have this software.

You can download the newest version and play with it. If you try to cut, it will cut into tiny pieces, but at least you can play with the program and see if it's something you can figure out.

Enjoy!

I just wanted to let you know that I LOVE SCAL! I have both, SCAL and CDS (Cricut Design Studio) and SCAL wins hands down! VERY easy to work with...I'm constantly cursing out CDS. I highly recommend! :thumbsup2

Oh, and I don't use inkscape...is too complicated for me too.

I don't use inkscape either. I tried.... You can use your font without inkscape. I agree with the previous poster --- it is so much better than CDS. I am not sure that you can easily cut out things in a circular or wavy pattern though. I think you may need inkscape for that.

Also - -don't forget dingbats! You can cut dingbats just as easily as TT fonts. Cricut does not have a good pumpkin. I found a good pumpkin dingbat and then a whole set of different pumpkin faces to cut out of it:cool1:

I can't find a photo of my pumpkins right now. Here are some things I amde with SCAL -- no inkscape

The epcot title piece and the Mickey/Epcot icon

Wow! Those are incredible. You all have convinced me! Now I just need to find some time to sit down and play with the trial download to convince DH that I can do it. Then it goes on my Christmas list!

Susan, can you do some research about the pumpkin dingbat and get back to me on it's name? :lmao:

For the Mickey head pumpkins, I used the Mickey icon from prototype community, found at Mickeyavenue.com . In SCAL, I used the basic shapes circle and made one to fit the Mickey Icon. The pumpkin face is a dingbat font called punkinhead (urbanfonts.com) -- lots of great faces! I cut the face out of the circle, then mounted onto the Mickey head.

Do you have SCAL or SCAL2? SCAL2 is really worth the money.

For a good pumpkin, I have used Hallowein (dafont.com) -- it is actually a jack o lantern -- I use the black out feature to make it a pumpkin, then I use punkinhead font to make whatever face I want. I have stretched the pumpkin to make it tall and thin, or short and fat etc. It works well.

I got SCAL2, I like it a lot! Thanks for giving me the names of the fonts!
