Trying to decide about a dress....

So, I'm now trying to decide what to do about a dress. My first big dilemma is that I would absolutely LOVE to have my mom and I make it together. But she's in Indiana, I'm in Maryland, and the logistics would be tough to work out. Add that she's got a lot of stress going on lately with taking care of my grandmother, who's gotten to be very difficult, and keeping up on my dad's health as well, and.... well, I'm coming to the conclusion that I'm going to need to go ahead and just buy my dress. The good news is that I can probably have her come out for a few days to work on alterations, especially if I buy a dress on the internet, which is what I'm kind of looking at doing.

But that brings me to my next dilemma. After looking at what seems like hundreds of dresses on-line, I found what I think is THE dress. The one I really want, that I think is perfect for me. The problem is, it seems to be a very unique dress. Most of the dresses out there, there are some close variations at one designer or another, so finding something close at a bridal shop to try on isn't that difficult. Nope, I have to go and find the one that isn't like anything else out there. When I show it to bridal shops, the best they can do is tell me they can let me try on dresses that are a-lines, which is what this dress is, but that they don't have anything that looks even close to this one. And not too many shops around carry this particular line - I went to one Saturday that's supposed to, and they evidently didn't want my business. The dress I want is supposed to retail for $498, the designer's site said that the shop I went to is supposed to carry it (Forever Yours informals line), and the woman I talked to agreed they did, but then when she asked me how much I was looking to spend on a dress, and I said around $500, she informed me that she was just wasting my time. :snooty: After all, they didn't sell any bridal gowns in their shop that started at less than $1300.

Sheeesh!!!!

I can get the dress on-line for around $400. I tried on an A-line at David's bridal on Sunday, and it really looked great on. If I wasn't already in love with this other style, I probably would have been ready to buy it! So I think the dress will look good on me. But spending $400 to buy a dress on-line that I can't return and have never tried on makes me VERY nervous.

Oh, BTW, here's the dress:

Anyone have any opinions on this? Or suggestions? I'm also looking at getting a different color trim, which worries me - I found a site which has a pretty good picture of the fabric swatches, so I'm fairly confident about the color choices at this point, but.... Argh! It really stinks that there is a no return policy on these dresses!

Here's the fabric swatches:

And I'm thinking of the sapphire right now.

And finally, since I've never posted a picture of myself before, I'll do that so you can get an idea of who the dress will be going on! :)

I can't help with the whole online purchasing dilemma, but I just wanted to say that it's a lovely dress and you'll be a beautiful bride!!

I think that dress will look beautiful on you. Have you tried looking at the authorized retailers on the designers website? I noticed it is an international company, but they may have a shop or authorized dealer in you area.

Well, there aren't a lot of retailers near me that carry their informals line, and the first one I went to was the one that told me they didn't sell any dresses that were less than $1300. Huh? Yeah, that place was really snooty, and obviously didn't want my business. She also tried to tell me I'm "petite" (I'm 5'4", which is average height), and that I'm short-waisted (I'm not, and I sew, and have for years, so I would know if I were!) She said that she'd been doing fittings for years, and assured me that an A-line would not look good on me with my figure (huh? classic hour-glass figure, what more could you ask?) Oh, and then she tried to tell me that I would look best in a drop-waist. Uh, yeah, if I WANT to look like a dumpy rectangular box for my wedding! The only problem I was afraid I might run into is that I have skin folds at my midriff from losing around 100 pounds within the last year and a half. But when I tried on the A-line dress Sunday, that didn't seem to be a problem at all - the way they structure wedding dresses, it kind of holds it all in! :)

There's a few more shops I can try, but I have a feeling most of them are going to be like that first one. They don't want my kind of business - I want a fairly low-cost gown, and I'm not bringing any other business to the store, as my bridesmaids are both in Indiana. Grrrr...

Sometimes I get really frustrated - the wedding business is such a racket, you know? And the funny thing is, I wasn't even looking at price that much - it just so happens that the dress I like is not that expensive compared to a lot of others out there.

GL with the remaining shops. I can't believe that one told you that an A-line wouldn't look good on you. Obviously she has no clue about what she sells. The wedding industry can be a racket, but there are a lot of gook places out there too.

Beautiful dress.....Would the company send you a swatch of the fabric? Realize that the final color may vary, but it might give you a better sense of what it would be.

An A-line looks good on every body type so you shouldn't worry about that. I looked at a Forever Yours Informal gown originally too. I loved the gown on-line but couldn't find it locally. I didn't want to buy it without trying it on (I'm small, but definitely pear shaped, and long waisted, so I have to be careful with some dress styles - usually way too big on top and just fit through the hips). In the end I loved the gown I chose more so I wasn't disappointed at all. Mine was an off-the-shoulder, A-line ballgown, very similar in shape to the gown you are looking at. It fit perfect and was very flattering. I think that gown will look beautiful on you!

Just a thought - if you do buy it and hate it you could sell it on e-bay.

wow, great dress! :thumbsup2 I think it will look great on you! A-lines are really flattering on pretty much everyone! I agree with scootert about seeing if the company will send you fabric swatches.

also, congrats on the weight loss! (hope that's appropriate!) :goodvibes
