Trying on shoes with bare feet?

I've been watching What Not To Wear since the lady from here was on, and I noticed that when shoe shopping the people try on new shoes with bare feet.

I wonder when this became acceptable. It used to be a sanitary issue that you needed stockings, or sox & if you didn't have any with you, you had to buy a cheap pair of nylon slipons before you were allowed to try on any shoes.

Sometimes I think I must live in a vacumn when I realize how much I DON'T know.

Don't most shoe stores have those little slip on nylon footie things? Every store I've been to recently still has them. Or they could be like my dd--she steals the socks right off my feet to try shoes on if she's wearing flip flops.

I agree with you, though. It is gross to try shoes on with no socks.

I never really thought about it but to be honest wearing a pair of nylon things is like being barefoot so I don't see much difference.

What grosses me out is when people walk back to the restroom on an airplane with bare feet! I always make sure I am wearing knee highs or socks when I go through security.

Not sure why it is more sanitary to have hose or socks on because if you have sweaty feet they will be sweaty no matter what, and sweaty socks are just plain old yucky.

I hardly ever wear socks even in winter. I hate the feel of them on my feet. Hose I don't mind as long as they don't have that toe seam, but only wear them when dressed up.

So, I will try on shoes in bare feet. Sorry. BUT if I did go into a high end store (like they do on WNTW) I would put those little sylong thingies on only because they were super expensive shoes and I would feel like I had to. But if I bought them I would bewearing them with bare feet.


I actually thought the reason we had to wear socks when trying on shoes when we were kids was to be sure they fit correctly with the socks my Mom made me wear.

I try on shoes with what they will be worn with, whether it's barefoot, socks, trouser socks, stockings, etc. Isn't the point of trying shoes to see if/how they fit?

Same here. Shoes don't fit the same barefoot as they do with those nylon thingies.

It depends where i am shopping i have to say.

If i am in primark (really cheap clothing shop) i wont worry about it too much. I won't however go to a proper shoe shop without socks on.

Maybe im just crazy!

Well, the thing about it is, in case you haven't noticed, today's generation does not believe in wearing socks. So, unless the person trying on the shoes is over 40, they probably never wear socks and do not have them on when shopping for shoes.

I do not want to divulge my age, but I would have to say that your comment is not entirely correct.


Although the fact that I don't wear socks ever probably has more to do with living in Florida.

Thats not true! I am half that age and i am wearing a wonderful pair of pink spotted socks! I can't wear shoes like converse without socks, thats gross!

I think that you should always try on shoes with whatever you are going to wear with them. So, if you are going to wear the shoes without socks or hose, then try them on barefoot. That way you can truely see and feel how the shoes will fit.

I'm not real fond of a bare foot in enclosed shoes. Personally, I only go without socks in sandals. My daughter has the biggest stinkfoot when she wears flats without socks. But then it may depend on what the shoe is made out of. Some sandals can cause stinkfoot too.

Ok this thread is making me laugh and heres why. About a month ago DH and I were in Target. On the spur of the moment I said to him oh we should pick you up a new pair of sneakers (his had holes in the bottom because he just won't go buy a new pair) and he said yeah ok. Well I didn't think about it but he did not have on socks because he does not wear them unless its to work. Anyway, we stroll over and he sits down and I start handing him the different shoes and he picks a pair and proceeds to try it on. I said oh shoot you dont have any socks wait let me get you some of those nylon things. He gave me an evil look and said no way am I putting those on my feet, and proceeds to put the shoes on. Well in the meantime this young girl who was working in that section walks by him and looks down at him putting his foot in this shoe and I swear I wish you all could see the look she made at him...it was kind of like this and this . Oh heavens to Betsy I never laughed so hard in all my life at that face she made. She never said a word just made the worst grossed out face and kept going. Ok sorry I guess you had to be there but this thread just made me think of that.

To be honest, I would wear socks with my sandals if I could just get past the thought that it looks weird. At least on women I think it does. It doesn't bother me for a man to wear socks with his sandals.

Another thing I won't do is wear sandals when I go out to eat. Something about not know what is under the table and sticking my feet under there just gives me the heebie jeebies.

I was thinking the same thing.

If I'm buying sneakers or boots I always go to the store with socks or hose. If I'm buying dressy shoes (flats or heels) or sandals I try them on my bare feet because that is how I will wear them if I purchase them.
