Truck stop/Rest stop off I95?

We are driving the RV down for the first time this Feb for DS(2) first WDW trip. DH wants to try to make it as far down as possible the first day of our two day drive. So he is planning on doing a truck stop or rest stop for our overnight stop. Anyone have any recommendations? I believe we will stop in South Carolina or Georgia since we are coming from Southern New Jersey. It would be a plus if it had showers but a comfortable stop and can be safe for an overnight is most important.

Sometimes we fuel up at Flying J truck stop, and take a few hours to sleep at night. There are RV areas to park - no amenities, of course. It can be very noisy as they are right near the fueling areas (all nighters), but they would be safe. (Just be aware, first come, first served, limited spaces).

I suppose there would be *trucker* showers. I have no desire to use those, so have never looked into them. We always have enough water in our MH to cover our trip down.

Rest areas do not allow all nighters, but a couple hours of rest would be allowed.

We have made the trip to Disney on 95. Like you, we look for a good stopping point in SC or GA. Our normal rule of thumb is that 500 miles is a long day on the road - so not sure how far you plan to go on day one. Here are two places we have used and can recommend.

KOA Fayetteville in Wade, NC
KOA Savannah South in Richmond Hill, GA

We have also used Flying J as a short stop to rest on a very long day when it would have been pretty late to pull into a campground. No hookups but it worked.

There are a few other campgrounds that other people have recommended. We have not used them. They are:

New Green Acres
KOA Point South

I will never understand why people stop at South of the Border.

We stopped with our minivan once to use the bathroom, and it was DISGUSTING!

We will take our first RV trip this fall as well. With our minivan, we stopped on our last trip at exit 95 in Savannah GA. From there it is about 4 hours to Disney. However, we started in NJ too, shore area, and I know we will not make as good time in the RV as we did in the van. I think there was a truck stop at that exit, there were tons of hotels and restaurants.

However, we started in NJ too, shore area, and I know we will not make as good time in the RV as we did in the van. I think there was a truck stop at that exit, there were tons of hotels and restaurants.

Am in complete agreement about *south of the border*!! Get so sick of their stupid signs. We never see many cars there, so really wonder how they stay in business. My dh & I play guessing games about what *really* keeps them in business We, too, would never go there.

were also from south jersey and also going in feb were leaving on the 2nd about 3am also gonna go as far as I can stand to drive. being a truck driver it should be about 13hrs . gonna hit a truck stop for a few hrs sleep before movin on if you guys are going down at that date maybee we could convoy.

You can find locations of Flying J's and Cracker Barrels online under their respective dot com addresses. They can both be far between, so you might want to locate several around where you might expect to stop.

South of the Border does have a campground. It is gated and quite reasonably priced. Arrived late and left early. We would stop there again.

Did not realize Cracker Barrels allow camping at night. Regardless, I would not feel safe in their parking lot. At Flying J, you are in an RV spot, and there's activity (fueling) going on all night, plus there's usually several other RVs around you. We fuel up our MH, then pull over into an adjacent RV area, and catch 40 winks, or more. Usually never even open our door after fueling.

As for the PP's suggestion of CC at *south of the border* there's something cheesy about that place that we will never care to go to. There's too many other CC's around to choose from.

I live near Savannah and it takes at least 5 hrs. to Disney on I-95. There are several speed traps and you don't want to be racing through them. There are several good hotels, etc. at the first few exits entering Georgia.

Some exits off I95 make me nervous because they are run down and desolate. Savannah was a great place to stop, but it may make our first day drive too long since travelling in the RV will be slower.

We only stayed at Walmart (about 30miles from Gainesville) one time while going to pick up our son at U of F. We happened there on a weekend when *everything* was going on and couldn't find *one* CC that had a vacancy. We had no choice but to stay there. We were *very* sorry. About 2 AM a group of loud motor cycles started roaring around our MH and we were *very* uneasy to say the least. We definitely couldn't sleep. Thankfully, when we were wondering what would happen a huge thunderstorm blew in and there was a torrential downpour. THAT drove them away. We said *never again*. We *did not* feel safe.

They were probably just *messing* with us, but who knows?? We sure will never try a repeat of that! It's Flying J or a proper CC in a good location from now on.

The New Green Acres Camp Ground has all pull thrus and is very good for overnight, without unhooking tow or trailers. Very reasonable and just off I-95 in Walterboro, SC, just north of Ga. state line.
Also the Florida Welcome Center does allow overnight. I called the center and asked and was told it is patroled, safe, a little noisy with trucks running and in and out, but well lighted.
