I'm hearing that Tropical Storm Stan is on it's way - or at least due to form by Saturday. As I'm in the UK and getting this information second hand can anybody shed any light for me? Obviously I hope that if it does form it causes as little devastation as possible but also from my rather selfish point of view I'm hoping it doesn't coincide with my holiday (we fly on Saturday - sorry!)

According to weather.com, there are currently no active Atlantic storms. Nothing named 'Stan' yet, so I wouldn't worry too much about it.

There is a large area of unsettled weather and it may develop into a tropical depression; however, it looks to be heading north and wouldn't impact FL except at the beaches for the foreseeable future.

In the wee early hours this morning (around 4 am!) The weatherman was talking about a storm that was brewing in the area south of Jamaica I believe, I dont remember details because they said it was going in a direction other than the gulf states!! (so nowhere near FL either!!)

I dont remember them saying it had a name, but it was 4am!!

The Weather Channel this morning siad there is an area in the Caribbean that they're keeping an eye on because it shows some rotation now. There is also a disturbance near the African coast, south of the Cape Verde Islands, that may develop in a few days that they are watching.

No Stan yet!

The "invest" area in the Caribbean is heading towards Mexico, if anywhere. Very little threat to central Florida.

It's cute how everyone gets worked up about storms heading here, we very very very rarely get anything and last year was just a big fluke. :)

Aren't all the storms named for women the first time through the alphabet? Since Rita just went through alot of storms would have to go by before we came to a "Stan".

Nope. We have already had a taste of Cindy, Dennis and Katrina here in Alabama. :umbrella:

In 1979, both women and men's names were used. One name for each letter of the alphabet is selected, except for Q, U and Z. For Atlantic Ocean hurricanes, the names may be French, Spanish or English, since these are the major languages bordering the Atlantic Ocean where the storm occur.

So who decides what names are used each year? The World Meteorological Organization uses six lists in rotation. The same lists are reused every six years. The only time a new name is added is if a hurricane is very deadly or costly. Then the name is retired and a new name is chosen. (info came from Fema website)

The remaining names this year are:

Stan
Tammy
Vince
Wilma

If they run out of names this year (and I'm praying they don't!) they will then use the Greek Alphabet (ie., Alpha, Beta, etc.)

HTH! :cool1:

There is no Stan. Like someone said bookmark the noaa site and keep informed-the info will be under storm predictions and there under Atlantic. Even if it does form it won't go to FL-it'll head into the Bay of Campeche. I don't even think about these waves until they are Tropical Storms and I just went through Rita. As a matter of fact We were in WDW while Rita was brewing. I had to cut my vacation short to get back to Houston before the airports closed but what the hey that's the price I pay for living in paradise. Go to WDW and enjoy.

If you want to keep up with current weather and news from our fav place wftv.com is a really good site. No signs of stan on there yet though.

They also don't use X or Y, obviously. So there are 21 names each year before we get to Greek letters.
