Hello Everyone...

Days are flying by now..

Have a question..

Tropical Night..Do I really need to wear Pants to dinner?..Seems kind of crazy..

Is anyone else going to wear shorts to dinner..And I mean Dress Shorts...

We are having Tropical night at Parrot cay

Let me know

Bobby

This was the one night that our servers told us to be comfortable & wear shorts. DH & DS did & so did most of the other guys in our dining room. We will be wearing matching shirts & dresses this year & the boys will be wearing kaiki shorts.

We asked the people at DCL on one of our numerous phone calls and they said that it is fine to wear shorts on tropical night, even expected.

Can't wait to find a bright tropical shirt in St Maarten to wear with my dress shorts.

Personally, I would choose capris over shorts, but I can't stand my thighs. :o I bought a cute tropical skirt, though, and wore that.

Just now looking at our Navigator for Mexicalifragilisticexpialidocious night (same as the Tropical....... night on the Eastern), and it is the only one that doesn't say "no shorts" for dinner. Instead of No shorts or Jeans, it simply says, No Jeans.

This is just my opinion, but I don't think I or my husband would ever wear shorts to any of the main dining rooms even if it is Tropicali or Mexicali night -- BBB or Topsiders perhaps, but not the main dining rooms.

Again, this is just my opinion.

All of our Navigators from previous cruises (both Eastern and Western) state "No shorts or jeans, please." on Tropical/Mexical night. In fact, the most recent have the statement in more than one place.

In front of me I have the Navigator from the July 3 2004 cruise ... and I quote:

WEDNESDAY, JULY 7th 2004
Suggested Evening Attire: Mexican, Tropical (No jeans please)
Suggested Palo Dinning Attire: Jacket Reccomended

FWIW I didn't wear shorts.

I wore capris a few weeks ago to this dinner. They are comfy and still follow the suggested dress. (plus they are warmer than shorts if you are cold like me!)

Sorry, wasn't on the July 7th sailing so I can't speak (and wasn't) for the Navigators on that sailing. However, the Navigators from the four seven-night cruises I have sailed on do indeed ask that shorts not be worn in the main dining rooms on Tropical/Mexical night.

A scan from the Navigator of the May 1st Eastern cruise:

Notice the "No shorts or jeans, please" next to each seating time for the main dining restaurants. (It's even in caps! ;) )

The Disney Cruise Line web site also provides this info in relation to appropriate dinner dress:

What should I wear to dinner?
For more specific suggestions, look under "What do I bring for evenings?" The attire for Animator's Palate and Parrot Cay is casual. Lumière's, Triton's and Palo are more formal. We kindly request that no shorts, swimsuits, T-shirts or jeans be worn in any of our restaurants in the evening.

What do I bring for evenings?
Let's talk about dinner clothes: We kindly request that no shorts, T-shirts or jeans be worn in any of our restaurants in the evening. Evening attire for the Animator's Palate and Parrot Cay dining rooms is casual. Button-down, open collar shirts or polo shirts and slacks are recommended for men. Pants and a blouse or a casual dress are appropriate for ladies. For Lumière's and Triton's restaurants and our adults-only alternative dinner restaurant, Palo, it is suggested that men wear jackets or a button-down shirt and tie and ladies wear dresses or pantsuits. Aboard our 7-night cruises, one dinner is semi-formal. Another evening requires more formal - or "black-tie-optional"- attire. Tuxedo rentals are available, in advance. Other themed evenings aboard our 7-night cruises that adults might want to pack for include salutes to the 1960s, 1970s and 1980s.

Three Circles-I have the Navigator from July 7 and it does state:

Suggested dress: Tropical, Casual-no shorts or jeans please

I do remember seeing quite a few people in shorts for this dinner.

This is one of those areas that I think DCL is vague, either intentionally or inadvertently. I remember seeing on a website of an individual who had a Cat 3 room, where she posted photo copies of some of their room information, DCL told people in Cat 1,2,&3 that shorts were acceptable and encouraged on Trop/Mex night. Looking at my Navigator's, I see both requests (no jeans,no shorts vs no jeans) Some are even contadictory on the same Navigator - front page - no jeans, dining page- no jeans, no shorts. We have been told by our servers on several cruises without asking that we could wear shorts on Trop night. In my opinion, DCL's vagueness makes it clear they don't really care if you wear shorts or not. They surely don't throw you out if you do, and it seems like every cruise more and more guests are wearing shorts.

Karen ... where are you looking? I have my July 7 Navigator in front of me and on the first page, under the WELCOME TO COZUMEL paragraph mine clearly does not say no shorts. Is yours actually different than mine?

Looking on the back page I see where it says for the 1st and 2nd dinner seating - no shorts or jeans.

WOW..

Seems there is no right answer..

According to the Navigators, No Shorts..

But The CM's at the restaurants say Yes..

I guess I will see what my Table mates do...

Hi Mark!

I went straight to the back page, left hand column. It states the suggested dress after "DINNER" then down under the seating times. I looked at the back page because we used it so much as a reference during our cruise.

If our servers tell us the night before Tropical night that we can wear shorts - we will wear dress shorts. There 'permission' means more to me that what the Navigator says. On both our 12/01 and 12/02 cruise our servers DID tell us we could wear shorts - DH and DS's all wore dress shorts and no one said anything (nor do I remember any dagger stares).

MoranClan- I hear ya!!!

I go back and forth on this issue. Sometimes I feel that what is stated in the Navigator is what should be followed, then part of me feels "What is the big deal if I have on nice dress shorts?"

Maybe the first 3 nights of the 7 night should be more "no shorts" but the last three theme nights be more casual??????

Just a thought.

And we looked on the first page when each Navigator was delivered. But you think they would have the same information in both places, wouldn't you?

Mark-you are right, this does make it difficult to know what to follow.

But all I can say is that it would have been tricky to do the limbo after dinner in a dress! ;) ;) ;)
