Tron opening update rumors??

This makes no sense, they were testing humans on it last month.
Some imagineers have ridden it. They still need to hire and train all the CM’s needed to run it.

Spring probably means before Memorial Day. There will probably be a month of AP/DVC previews before that, and a month of CM previews before that.

I wouldn’t be surprised if they had AP/DVC previews in March and grand opening before Easter.

Its painfully obvious they are holding off opening this because they just want a new ride in 2023 and think it will drive traffic there.

They fail to realize the ride itself drives people there. You can open it tomorrow and people will still plan trips next year to try it out.

It is embarrassing though that their competition can make rides much more quickly that are new, and that Tron is a ride already made in other parks and takes half a decade.

I have to assume it's much more about when Disney wants to have the new ride for crowd distribution than the actual needed deadline. Perhaps they are hoping to get people back just after the 50th celebration ends.

Exactly what i am thinking - it could be ready for holiday season 2022 but they know that the park will be packed (due to their beloved park reso system) - they are worried about dip in the crowds in 2023 so will open it then...

They purposefully stalled construction several times. So theres that.
Well yeah they have stalled it several times, they have taken what should have been a few years and turned it into double that, they have had that area an eyesore for way longer than necessary. Universal built the Velocicoaster from foundation to open in 2 years. It was a brand new coaster - unique. Tron is a clone that was already built and sitting in a warehouse. Ridiculous.

With the long lines in Magic Kingdom it would be nice to have something open to distribute them in to. It makes sense that it would open when Splash goes down. Splash was announced 2 years ago. They could have taken Splash down last January to start demo and opened Tron. They kept dragging their legs, getting next to nothing done in 2020. They started HUMANS riding in last month and now they say it needs another 8+ months. It is all about the financial spreadsheets and when they want to take the hits.

We learned last Oct/Nov that Disney was doing nothing for the 50th except lots of merchandise. No special fireworks, show, night parade, day parade .... business as usual. I don't think it has any impact on crowds.

Not to make excuses because I don't know the details, but I do know TRON and Velocicoaster have two different manufacturers... that may account for a lot of the differences in construction speed.

I don't blame Disney for wanting to space out Cosmic Rewind and TRON and not pushing to open TRON earlier this year. No guarantees they could have gotten it open earlier this year even if they had wanted to. I think they likely could get it open for December, but would rather wait because December is going to be super busy regardless. Obviously it would be nice to have the extra attraction capacity but I can't really blame them. I am pleased they are not taking Splash down during the busy holiday season before TRON is open. In terms of capacity, it makes sense not to lose one attraction until at least closer to when the other will open.

Disney has been marketing the 50th celebration a ton, though. That marketing is one of the reasons I decided to go this year, so it worked on me and I'm sure it works on others. Even if the actual celebration is lackluster, they are absolutely still going to continue promoting it until it's done. Then they can turn their attention to promoting TRON.

Except that the tron coaster is literally done considering they were riding it this past weekend.. Another 8 months to design the inside areas? No way

Oh yeah, I agree, I was talking about why it might not have opened earlier this year or before that. They're absolutely deliberately choosing to delay the opening until next spring.

To me the "celebration" is rather lackluster.... someone did a list of things:
- Disney Enchantment... that they are already changing it, says it all.
- Harmonious... again changes are coming to it as well (both of these could use... more Disney)
- KiteTails.... heard that "show" was now more of a they do it every now and then. But highlights there is an empty stadium there.
- Remy.... cute ride that all can ride, much needed at Epcot. Solid B Ticket.
- Beacons of Light.... Epcot's Sphere is the star here, (Castle has always lighted up). Again cute enhancements, be must see?
- La Creperie de Paris.... not hard to make a reservation or walk in, as it's just not what you expect.
- Space 220..... one I was really looking forward to.... Space is rather boring when you sit there for an hour and half waiting on food. Definatley a stop to visit the bar, but beyond that?
- GotG.... really great attraction, if you waited till later in the celebration to catch it.

- TRON.... will miss the 50th celebration.
- Broadway Theater at MK... that was actually announced, but got the ax early on.

100 Years of Magic (not the new 100 Years of Wonder) was a special time for us at WDW. Really had hoped that would be able to recapture that feel.

Yeah everyone was saying it was going to open late this year but I didn't get my hopes up for my January trip. This gives me something to come back for in a few years time. :D

So.. do we think "Spring 2023" means likely before Memorial Day? I know it could technically be all the way to the first part of June. I'm planning on coming for my 40th birthday Memorial Day weekend and really want it to be open then. The thing is, I'm not planning on being there on Memorial Day itself. Hoping to leave that Sunday.

I see a lot of posts in here complaining that this is a "clone ride", and while it is taking a longer time than it should, a coaster of this scale is definitely not a clone ride. The layout is the same, but the supports have to be custom made to the plot of land, the concrete foundations all have to be engineered and poured, and any theming or interior electronics have to be built from scratch. The coaster portion of the ride is done and has had plenty of people on it, but I guarantee the theming inside isn't even close to finished. At this point the regular operating mode might not even be done, since that is usually one of the last things to be programmed along with ride faults. I worked as an engineer at a non-Disney theme park, and even when we built "clones" of another coaster it was still a massive construction project.

This is my train of thought as well. We were just there this past May and missed GOTG opening by a week or so. We will return this coming May, and I really had thought Tron would be open by then. Now seeing the "spring" opening I am assuming we'll be in the same boat again.

Something someone sent to me ...

Hagrid's AND they designed, permitted and built VELOCICOASTER AND it's over a year old.

Both new, unique custom coasters, one HIGHLY themed.

Disney's timeline is quite sad.

I never said it wasn't sad, and Disney sure is taking their time, but saying it's a copy and paste from the existing model is still wrong.

Here's a list of things I thought Disney could have done different for the 50th:

1. Start the day off with a 50th anniversary welcome
2. Every day bring in an old cast member or Imagineer to honor
3. 50th Anniversary special film at the Main Street Cinema documenting the history of the WDW resort
4. Special limited time performance of Main Street Electrical Parade or Spectromagic
5. Original long version of Tiki Room
6. Tons of old characters
7. Bring back the Mickey Mouse Marching Band
8. Special historical narrations on the Genie app.
9. Bring back the Handwich
10. Giveaways
11. Absolute shame the WDWRR is not operating during the 50th.

I’m almost positive it will be open by Memorial Day. I think it’s even possible it will open by Presidents Day, and would be surprised if it’s not open for Spring Breaks in mid March. They just asked CM’s to submit applications for transfers. I figure it will take a month to go through the applications and interview CM’s, then another month for the test and adjust team to train those CM’s, then another month for CM previews and other for AP/DVC previews.

All good ideas but Disney had no idea what 2021 was going to be like financially.
They scraped most of the celebration. Just hoping to be open.
Once the crowds were strong, no way or no need to start adding 'things'.
Now focus on Epcot and 100 years celebration.

We’ll considering the ride itself is operational right now to use, they can start training them in advance
