I know this has probably been asked a hundred times, but I was wondering if anything has changed compared to older posts...
Anyways, I am looking for a tripod for my dslr (nikon d3100), my college lets me borrow tripods (but Im graduating so this option is running out) when needed and I have gotten used to Manfrottos. My problem is that I dont have the cash (considering just the heads are somewhere around 400 bucks) for one that nice. So I was wondering if anyone has an advice about tripods to get? I dont really have a set price limit, but it could be anywhere from 20 (I know, not gonna happen) to 100 or 150 (this is probably max or close to it). I really want it for long exposure shots of things like fireworks and waterfalls.

Thanks for any help.

Is this for travel (usually lighter weight) or around town, what will be your requirement? I was recently looking for a new "around town" tripod but was unable to spend the $1000 plus cost of a really, really good one. What I found that was very interesting was an Oben, specifically the AC-2320LA. Its priced slightly higher than your budget at $249.95 at B & H. They also have a carbon fiber version, which obviously costs more. I was unable to pull the trigger because my 10 year old laptop finally failed. Unless I come into a large influx of cash I will probably purchase this one in the future. For travel, I use a Cullmann Magic. I think the latest iteration is a 4.

It will mostly be used for travel. I would also prefer a video head, simply because I find them a little easier and more useful... this is a personal preference, but at the same time I do realize that a photo head is much better for what I have listed I just think I will get more use out of the tripod if it has a video head.

I will have to take a look at the cullmann magic :)
