Triple D's February Challenge - The Wait is Finally Over!!

Sharon - I've lived half my life in Kansas the other half in Iowa both are very windy states. I think I'm down to finding a big plastic bubble somewhere perferably in a tropical location!!

Augie, I'm fortunate my cycle computer turns off after a while. I don't have one, but the fancy wireless ones can pick up interference from all kinds of sources. A friend logged 1,300 miles while the bike was sitting in his dining room. Top speed was 130 mph. Wheeee!

I got some rowing and elliptical cross training in this morning. Ready for the day!

bit of a quick drive by . . .they are doing work on our cable because soemthing got knocked out in the snow storm, so I feel like any second this message could self destruct.

Bryan: Apollo 13. C'mon, give me something challenging!

Liz: Pixie dust and positive thoughts for quick healing. Anxiously awaiting your return to the fold.

Everyone else: Good job! keep up the good work, getting those steps in.:cheer2:

Oh, and for the record . . .I am a wind/no a.c gal. My spouse likes to crank up the a.c. any time the thermometer gets above 70. This is true both in the car and the house. From May through October, one of us (whoever goes to bed last and thus loses control of the environment) ends up in the guest room because I like to sleep with the windows open and the fan set on low, so there is a gentle breeze of cool night air wafting through, while he actually bought a window a/c unit only because it had a "turbo cold" setting. Kinda like Spinal Tap -- this one goes to 11. We bought a house with central air, but my kids didn;t realize it till last summer (they are 10 and 13) because I will only turn it on if the temp is in the high 90s for several days (in my defense, our house is old with lots of shade trees and cross breezes, so it stays cool. At least, that's my story.

Funny how this wasn't such an issue when we were dating. But we realy should have discussed it more carefully before we got married.:crazy2:

Hvaer a great day all!

A plastic bubble would be nice sometimes. When we have that rare day when the wind is under 10 mph, I love to go outside just to enjoy NO WIND.

One time Dh and I were doing Bike Across Kansas (many years ago) and the first 4 days was the kind of wind where sane people stay inside. The fourth day we had head wind of 35-40 miles an hour and one stretch we were literally going 4 mph. Of course we could have sagged in, but we weren't smart enough to do that. :rotfl:

Have you ever done RAGBRAI? That's the bike across Iowa that happens late July, that's usually the one really really hot week of the year for Iowa! I've know lots of people who have done it and continue to do it year and year. Even Lance Armstrong has shown up the last couple of years.

are you Kansas teammates anywhere near Lawrence? I'll be there in June for my half Ironman. :) It was windy last year. And not flat, like everyone seemed to think it would be. I loved that bike course!

I drive by Lawrence all the time on my way to KC to see my sister and the niece and nephew! I'm actually only about 2 hours away give or take from Lawrence just depends on that lead foot thing! I used to live 30 miles south of there and worked in Lawrence for years so am familiar with the area. Not familiar with the Ironman though. That part of KS is not flat by any means it's actually quite hilly and very pretty.

Okay, I just had to tell you guys my big news. Some of you may have heard about the LastMinuteTravel.com promotion where they are giving away free hotel stays. I was able to get a room at POR for marathon weekend next year. I'm so excited! :cool1:

Okay, back to talking about running and stuff...

That's so cool. I have tried but just not having any luck. When and how did you do it? I've even stayed up way past my bed time trying to get one of those rooms!

Automatic shut off would be nice! Sometimes it is just in this weather the thick gloves do not fully push the little button. And I find out when I start to go home. Maybe I should look into wireless. 130 mph, that is pretty impressive. I adadpted a bike computer to my aforementioned summer car, and the display would start to blink at 60mph. Maybe a wireless would work better.

That is some serious wind! What is the saying, what doesn't kill you makes you stronger?

It was free! I got it for Thursday-Monday. :cool1:

I got it today around 12:30pm. I was on the site ALL DAY on Monday and had no luck. I was so frustrated. I didn't even look at it yesterday, but today I decided to give it one more shot. I just kept clicking around on the site to different pages. A lot of people were saying that if they kept refreshing the same page, they weren't having any luck. The deal came up when I clicked on the Hotels tab. So give it a try. You never know! Good luck! :)

That sounds like a cool ride to do. Is this a race or just a ride? There is a ride called the FANY ride, across upper NY state that also sonds like fun.

BTW, sorry for the multiple posts. I never mastered the multiple quote post. What is the secret?

I don't think it's a race I'm not sure about that though so don't quote me! They have designated stops in the towns on the selected route for the year. Some people are very hardcore and camp every night carrying their own gear on their bikes with them, some people camp but have a bus or truck or something that carries their gear for them, others ride town to town and stay at hotels or homes of people they know and then there are the ones who just drink their way from town to town (I'm guessing they don't finish the whole ride)! The towns really show up for this event and cater to the riders providing food, drink and places to stay such as church basements, fair grounds etc. It's kind of a cult thing up there now and is exciting.

MrsPotts...I did the Kansas 1/2 Ironman (70.3) last year...it was a very pretty bike ride. Hilly, but not too hilly! Will be there in June if anyone wants to stop by!

My bike computer has only gone up to 48 mph that I know of. That was an awesome long downhill! :goodvibes Haven't quite hit the 50 mph mark...well, not that I know of...haven't had a computer on my bike in a couple of years.

So, no one has done cool events....a shame.:sad1:

I thought the TOT 13K was cool...fun to run around the parks like that in the dark and I loved the medal. My friend and I dressed as bellhops.

I've done a swim event in Alaska....in Ketchikan. Water was 58 degrees. Good thing I brought my wetsuit! 1000 yds of coolness!

The Urban Dare race last year was fun....running, plus clue solving, plus doing little challenges like throwing darts, kicking soccer balls, etc. along the way.

And, of course, Escape from Alcatraz. That would be my all-time cool event that I'm not sure I'll ever top. :thumbsup2

Mike I totally understand your decision. It is a smart and well thought out conclusion and I can't knock you for that. I hate that we will miss you this year but I can say this: Even though I am not going Goofy, I will try to make you proud!!

Thanks, Bryan. I know it was the right decision, but I still have that pang in my gut about missing Goofy #3. And I have no doubt you will make all of us proud - same as everyday. Keep up the great work.

Hmm, I think I feel a road trip coming on! :drive:

Lisa So I am "slacking" with my 25 miles huh? I will try harder tomorrow and see if I can hit 30. Will that be ok? Just kidding. I am doing as much as I can this week because I know next week I will be in a taper mode for half of the week getting ready for another Half that I am doing on the 15th. So it won't be like this always but right now, I am energized!!

It's suddenly month end for me at work and I realize it's February already and then I realize your 1/2 is just days away! Did you get that 30 in or did you slack off again? Keep the energy going Bryan it's contagious!!!!
