A general comment—the restaurants we visited this trip were all very good. We really think they’ve polished up their acts because of the new condo business they’re hoping to get (which would be more repeat business than from the folks who stay in motels).

On the other hand, whatever Boardwalk food we attempted to sample was atrocious (except for the funnel cakes and Dairy Queen). The prices charged up there are outrageous and the quality of the food is mostly poor.

So here are the restaurants we went to:

Neil’s Steak and Chowder House – We go to Neil’s almost every time we’re in Wildwood. The food is very good there. Prime rib is their specialty, and they do it right. Be sure to order the “potato cup.” You’ll have a choice of the usual fries or baked potato with your entrée as well as this potato cup thing, which is really a twice-baked potato with cheese. It’s yummy! They also serve a wonderful fresh-baked bread and salad with your meal.

The Lobster Shack -- This place has a great atmosphere, and it's close to the Boardwalk, so it's convenient. The clams casino were awesome here! Our meals were pretty good; would have been better if our waiter remembered to give us the rolls and cole slaw we were supposed to get. How he forgot, I can't imagine. We were starving when we got there and went through three bowls of oyster crackers in no time.

The Lobster House in Cape May – This place is more than a restaurant. It’s a whole dining and shopping experience. We met some of our family who were in Long Beach Island for the week and had a delightful meal. The service here is very professional, the food polished, and the atmosphere can’t be beat. It’s not inexpensive (well, it was for us because my BIL treated), but this is one of those places you have to visit at least once.

Little Italy – Excellent! We liked it so much, we ate here twice. The first visit, I ordered a rigatoni, eggplant, fresh tomato, basil, and mozzarella pasta dish that was to-die-for! The veal is outstanding here also, and the atmosphere is fantastic. They’ve redecorated it recently to look like an outdoor marketplace in Italy. It’s so pretty! Because it’s in the Crest, this is a bring-your-own-wine or beer place. Second visit, we also brought a couple of tiny bottles of Sambuca to put in our espressos.

Michael’s Restaurant and Bar – Don’t let the simple name fool you! This is no hole in the wall. We went on a Saturday night for that night’s special prime rib and seafood buffet. They offer the same special on Wednesdays. It costs $21.95 per adult and is worth it, although dessert is not included. A raw bar consisting of clams and oysters on the half-shell, cold snow crab legs and peel-and-eat shrimp IS included, though. Both the crab legs and shrimp were above average in quality compared to other buffets we’ve been. This place also offers live entertainment later in the night. A band was tuning up while we were there, and from the looks of the crowd at the bar, it seems like one rocking and fun place to hang. (If only we had a sitter that night!)

Rusty Rudder, Breakfast Buffet – Very good! Best breakfast buffet we’ve been to in the Wildwoods since the Anchor Inn closed. Coffee and juice are extra, but the food choices are plentiful and the quality of the food is quite decent. I loved the fresh fruit bar offered in addition to all the breads and hot foods.

Hawaiian Rumble Pancake House – Went here for breakfast and a game of miniature golf (a free game is included for each person who orders breakfast). The food is both delicious and plentiful here—be careful not to over order. The pancakes are huge! The atmosphere is loads of fun, the arcade quite large, and the golf course is very cute. This is a great place for a family to spend a cool weather morning.

Russo’s Market – This mini-market has a grill and serves hot sandwiches and some entrees. It also has a nice deli and sells fine butcher meats. I took Max (the dog) here three different mornings to buy bacon-and-egg sandwiches. They actually have a post outside labeled “Dog Parking.” Another day, I picked up a couple of hero sandwiches (called hoagies in WW) to bring to our beach picnic.

Munchies – This place is on Surf Avenue across the street from our motel. A great place to buy cheesesteaks, and my husband was crazy for their buffalo wings.

Sorrento’s Pizza (Boardwalk) – I am sad to report that this chain of boardwalk pizzerias has undergone huge changes. It used to sell very good pizza; now the pizza is horrible. Yuck!

Dairy Queen and Kohr’s – Hurray for soft ice cream! Both these places have a few locations on the boards and I love them. With all the walking, biking and swimming I did, I treated myself to a cone or sundae almost every night of the trip. I just wish Dairy Queen was a little closer to our motel so we could have brought Max back a kiddie cone. (He gets one whenever we go to DQ at home.)

The place to get pizza "back in the day" used to be Max's, if I remember correctly. Sorry to read that the boardwalk food is taking a turn for the worse, I wonder what the problem is? It used to be that you could run up there and eat good food relatively cheaply. (well....good by "boardwalk" standards anyway!)

Years ago there used to be an Italian restaurant on the boards called Mama Leoni's, is it still around?

Supposedly, "Mack's" is the place that has the good pizza. We looked at it, but weren't impressed by its appearance. Maybe it's O.K. It's originally from Ocean City.

Yes, Mama Leone's is still there. Didn't try it, though.

Best Pizza in WW for me was Macks...I used to go there all the time for lunch...I loved the stuff....but then again I was a GREASE addict back then...

I also enjoy Sam's...Right near Moreys pier.

So did you get any Curley's Fries while you were there? Another BW classic

Yeah, Dax, I got Curley's one night and was disappointed in them. They tasted pretty "flat." Not sweet or meaty. And at $3.95 for a small serving, I don't think they're a good value either. Paul's Fries (in the Nickel's Alley foodcourt) were just as bad.

Maybe it's a bad year for potatoes? (Haven't noticed that up here, though.)

Don't judge a book by it's cover- or in this case a pizza place by the 70's era decor ;) Mack's still has the best pizza on the boards. That is all they do- pizza. DH and I have been known to drive down just for pizza- about 4 hours round trip!

Curley's fries have really dropped in quality the last few years.

Do they still fry the curley fries in peanut oil?

No idea, Blondie. All I can say is that Curley's fries didn't have much flavor and were a rip-off at over $4.00 (with tax) for a small cup.

We did get awesome funnel cakes somewhere in North Wildwood. I don't remember the name of the place, but they were fresh. Cooked them right in front of you.

The same stand sold all kinds of stuff, batter-dunked and deep fried: Milky Ways, cannolis, Oreo cookies.

We went with the basic powdered sugar funnel cakes and were very happy with them. :)

I loved going to the Lobster house. They have delicious food and the atmosphere is great to. Always drive there when I go to wildwood. I also ate at Rusty Ruders (which was so long ago) but I loved there breakfast there.

Oh, the Rusty Rudder- I remember that place! My grandparents would take us there at least once on each trip.

Anyone remember Zabers?

yes i remember zabers and the lobster house has some great food havent been ther in a year ill have to go next weekend for dinner.

I love Wildwood. It sounds like you had a great time. :)

Last time I went, I stayed at the Starlux (??). It was with my ex, unfortunately, so he kind of sucked the joy out of being there.

But anyway...I sooo want to go back! I love Morey's Piers and the rides are great. Do they still have the petting zoo on the boardwalk? I remember spending an hour there one day feeding a llama? How about that weird Aquarium?

The Lobster Shack is my favorite place to eat there! :) I was never fond of the Hawaiin Rumble's food, but I've gone a few times for the atmosphere and the mini golf!

Reading your reports, I want to go back NOW!

What ever happened to Neil's steak and lobster house? Is it still around? It was located on Schellenger Ave. They used to have the neatest matches. (I used to collect matches, why, I have no idea!) I still have them, it's shaped like an oyster shell, on one side it says "This is An Oyster", on the other side it says "We'll Steak our Name on It!"

Blondie, that's the same Neil's we went to; it's called Neil's Steak and Chowder House now. Yes, it's on Schellenger Avenue.

Next time we're there, I'll make it a point to check out their matches. I don't smoke anymore, so I never notice matches anywhere these days.

I've never seen a petting zoo on the boards, Sheri. I don't doubt there was (is?) one, but we haven't encountered it. Have you ever been to the Cape May County Zoo? Beautiful zoo! Very nice! I wanted to go this trip, but couldn't get my son away from ocean swimming long enough

And yes, the motel you're talking about is called the Starlux, one of the newest places down there. Haven't stayed there myself, but it looks beautiful. :)

Never been to the zoo. :) I will have to visit the next time I go. :) There was also a dinner theater on Cape May, some sort of ghost story Victorian type mystery dinner theater thing (whew! that was a mouthful!) I wanted to see.

The petting zoo was sort of right in the center of the boardwalk. Or maybe it was just llamas. :) I don't remember and my ex has all the photos  . I just remember being able to buy carrots to feed to the llamas.

They were cute.

During senior week, our favorite bar (club) was the Stardust! Can't remember what street it was on, but that was the place to be after 10PM!

Oh my, senior week in Wildwood! A Philly tradition. I have so many memories (and some I would like to forget) from senior week. And yes, I remember clubbing at the Stardust- I think it was on Surf in N Wildwood?

I remember it being more in central WW than North Wildwood. It was down a side street somewhere! It's amazing I can remember anything at all from senior week!:o
