Just back from our first stay in the DVC villas at Wilderness Lodge.

The lodge was beautiful, I'd never seen it at Christmas. We arrived at about 9am and checked in quickly and without a wait. CM was very friendly and I was suprised by the holiday gift DVC trading pin. :goodvibes I let them know that we would be going to the parks and would not need in the room until about 9pm, so there was no rush.

My family is a Disney transportation family. We  using Disney transportation instead of driving - it's part of the magic for us. We wanted to go to EPCOT on Jan. 1st, and I opted for the least efficient but most interesting route to get there. We took the boat to MK, then the monorail to EPCOT. The trip was actually quicker than I expected. I ended up very impressed by my experiences with the boat transportation from VWL.

EPCOT was a great choice for the first - it was not crowded at all and we were ecited to get to see Wonders of Life before it closed again. Dinner was at the Sci-Fi and I decided to do the boat from EPCOT to MGM (again, not efficient - but I like the boat). I ended up finding all the boat stops among the EPCOT area resorts annoying. I believe I'll always walk when we stay at BWV this summer. We took the bus back to VWL found our first experience to be very good. (FWIW- As a bus devotee - I consider anything less than 20 minutes "good" :thumbsup2 and I don't hit frustration until 30 minutes+ )

We returned to out room around 9:30 - we were in a studio 3503. Great location for us (close to the bus stop!) with a view from the side of the lake. The room was immaculately clean (and I am a clean-a-holic). I was so impressed I almost took a photo of the inside of the fridge! I've got lots of pictures that I'll post ASAP. Our bed was very comfortable. The kids were on the pull-out. We went and got the VWL tree #3 from bell services and the kids were SO excited!! Thank you jimmytammy - and thanks to the family that left us candy canes! :goodvibes :goodvibes :santa: :goodvibes
The tree was so perfect. I kept it on at night as a night light!

Jan 2nd, we took a bus to the MK early (got there almost an hour before opening). Bus transportation was good again. It ended up being a nasty day in terms of weather, so we spent some time at the lodge and then went back to the MK after we felt dry. Bus transport in the afternoon was not so good. By that night, it was really bad. DH/DS and DD and I seperated to ride different rides. I called him on the cell before we rode Small World and he was waiting for the bus. I told him we'd just meet back at the room. DD and I rode and then walked from Fantasyland to the bus (stopping to retrieve coats from the locker and buy hair clips) and DH and DS were STILL at the bus stop waiting for a bus   Umm - the poeple who had been there all that time were really, really mad.

January 3rd - took a bus to the AK in the morning. Bus transportation was pretty bad. We waited a long time for each bus, and every bus was almost full from FW before it stopped at the lodge, so only a few people could get on at a time. I was actually frustrated and I try to be really relaxed about waiting. I really wanted to just take the car but the kids said it would "ruin the magic" so we continued to wait and did, eventually, get on a bus. We hopped from AK to EPCOT for dinner. No problem with the bus return trip.

January 4th - I learned from my mistake of trying the bus and we took the beautiful boat ride to the MK! I loved that boat ride. It was beautiful weather and when DH asked what my favorite part of the trip was - my initial response was the boat rides from WL. We spent the morning in the park then took the boat back to the lodge for lunch at WCC before heading home.

I really did love the lodge and I've got bunches of pictures to share soon. It is such a artistic and peaceful setting.

I was suprised though that I felt a bit restless at night. I spent some time trying to figure it out, and I realized that after years of Disney vacations pre-DVC - I am "used to" a specific touring style and it's hard for me to break that pattern. In the end, even though I like the whole look and feel and closeness-to-the-MK of VWL, I think it will be a once-in-a-while resort choice for us.

My ideal way to do Disney is to hit a park early in the morning (at opening or pre-opening) and stay until late afternoon or early evening. Then, I like to go back to my room and change for dinner. We typically eat dinner around 7:30, and after dinner, I don't want to do more parks but I also don't want to retire to the room. What I want to do, is to go to DTD and walk around. I ended up not doing DTD at all this trip, and I did love the lodge and I loved just being there - but I missed the whole DTD/PI love after the parks close. It was a good change though, because I actually had a reason to go back to the MK to watch Wishes, and I had not seen it from inside the park in a long time. :thumbsup2

All in all, I was impressed with almost everything about VWL (except the bus). I also love WCC - it's a great restaurant - we ate there TWICE this trip and it was just great being so conveniently located for the on-site dining.

VWL owners, your home is very lovely. It was a great treat and pleasure to stay there.

Nice report. I was there with you from 12/31 to 1/4. We rode the bus twice in that time and both times it was decidedly tardy. The most irritating thing is that for some bizarre reason we share a DTD bus with the Grand Floridian! I dont get it...I thought the driver was lost the first time he went that way. And getting back from DTD we saw virtually every other bus twice before ours showed up.

I did Universal with my niece this trip...a first for me while staying at WDW. It wasn't a bad combination at all. VWL is almost as far as you can get from Universal however today I found out if I take Vista way to the end I can (with a twist and turn) wind up on Palm Parkway which becomes Turkey Lake...and goes all the way to Universal without getting on I-4.

Just an FYI...Universal has added enough extra stuff that both of there parks are now full day parks. We went 4 out of our 5 days without being bored. I can use my old Disney plan of 3 days (almost) no repeat followed by a day of highlights. They do still need to add a bit more to IOA to offset the 3 outdoor rollercoasters they have & also to offset the Toon Lagoon. One because not everyone likes coasters and the other because not everyone wants to get soaking wet.

I'm glad you enjoyed your VWL stay. I, too, enjoy the boat transportation around Bay Lake.

Glad to hear that you enjoyed your stay. I can see where it wouldn't be a perfect fit for your touring style...sounds like SSR would work much better especially for your evenings.

I guess the bus thing is just hit or miss. We were at VWL the week before you and I have to say that it was by far the best bus service we've had at any WDW or DVC resort.

Thanks for sharing your impressions and comments. :)

It's sad to me that VWL was not a more perfect fit in terms of touring style, because it really is absolutely my favorite resort in ambience.:( I honestly did not realize just how much I gravitate towards DTD after dinner until I was away from a quick way to get there - but I probably end up at DTD from 9-11pm about 40-60% of my trip. I think I'd like to try it again someday in the summer and plan to spend some more evening time outside and at FW.

My overall impression of the bus system was that it was just as you said - hit or miss. It was honestly either really quick or really slow - more unpredictable than "bad". I think that it would be perfect to stay at VWL and use a car part of the time. I really did love:love: the boat, I thought it was very predictable and suprisingly efficient. :goodvibes

I just don't think there is any place prettier than VWL.

Ohh, those pictures make me wish we were there! We had a studio right in that vicinity for our very first trip home.

Thanks for the report and pics starbox ! Looks like u had a great room :thumbsup2

Great pictures! Looks like you had a nice view.:thumbsup2

Can I ask, how long does the boat ride take to get to the MK from the WL (or the other way around)?

As you can tell from what the tag-fairy left me - I'm a big fan of the boat from WL to MK. When we stay at VWL, we do have a car and use it for AK and DTD. AK is just too far with too many stops for us and the same thing has happened to us with the bus being nearly full when it arrives at WL. Also, when BB is open and it stops there too - that's an additional aggravation. As for DTD, I can't remember a time that I had good bus service to or from DTD - regardless of where I was staying. So several years ago, we decided to just drive there. But other than those two circumstances - I agree - the busses are a part of the experience and we generally love them too!

starbox....thanks for posting the pix. That view looking down at the VWL atrium is a great one, isn't it? I spent several quiet moments at that railing on our recent trip, listening to the music and taking it all in.

That's quite a nice zoom on your camera to get that "closeup" of the lake from your balcony! Very nice!

And I agree with the boat being a very nice part of the experience. We consider it one of our favorite attractions! :)

It's definitely not a "fast" boat. I've never timed it but I guess it takes about 10-15 minutes from the time it leaves the dock to the dock at MK?

I always enjoy gliding past the Contemporary with the monorails emerging from that resort and the MK coming into view as we come around the corner. And just as nice on the way back as WL comes into view in all its majesty. :)

Thankyou for sharing your trip with all of us.

Great pictures, and now I am homesick!!!!

We are tossing around the idea of staying at SSR for a few days in September After reading your post, it sounds good. We won't have our AP, so DD will be great.

Glad you enjoyed "Our Beloved Wilderness Lodge".

You know - in terms of DVC's - I've stayed at OKW, SSR and VWL so far but the one thing that was interesting to see at VWL was the number of people using the community areas. The Iron Spike room was always occupied and I saw more than one person reading next to the fireplace in the lobby of the villas. :cloud9:

As for the camera, we're big fans of the Canon Digital Elph's. We've had 3 so far - I keep upgrading to higher megapixels. This was my first Disney trip with the newer camera.

I'm still waiting for DH to get the room pictures to me - he sems to be having trouble. I think he saved the pictures in the wrong format that day. :(

Glad you enjoyed "Our Beloved Wilderness Lodge".

You ought to give SSR a try. It's not nearly as "transformative" as VWL - but it has some nice detailing and artistic touches and the pool/spa area is very pretty.

I am a walker - I just enjoy recreational walking in the evening, so DTD has become a destination that I look forward too. I really like the atmosphere at night - it's exciting without being as crowded as the parks & it's nice to have a late-night option. (We like th Adventurer's Club)

It's also a nice early morning walk to DTD for breakfast at Earl of Sandwich - and I found their breakfast to be suprisingly affordable and very delicious!

I honestly did not see much YOMD action around the parks (more at the MK than at the other parks). We saw a handful of Dream Fastpasses and I did not see any lanyards or ears the whole trip. Most of the dreams seemed very strictly outlined and random in their distribution - I do think there is a strict protocol that the dream team must follow. We saw a child win a shopping spree with Princess Aurora in Tinkerbell's Shop in Fantasyland - problem was that it was awarded to a small boy (maybe 3/4) and he was not that into it. I think the Dream Team must have had orders to pick the 6th child that entered or something like that, and the assumption was that it would be a girl and she'd get all princess-dressed out.:cloud9: Unfortunately, it started raining and the place got swarmed with people that normally would not hang out in a tinkerbell girl store so a tired and wet preschool boy ended up shopping with a pink princess in a dress store! :rotfl: It was still cute.

Anyway, we did run into a Dream Team member on our first day in the MK. He stoped DH and I to sing "Happy Anniversary" and then started talking to our kids and asked them Disney Trivia questions. When they got the right answer, he gave them buttons that made them "Honorary Citizens" of Disney World. :goodvibes

And finally, my favorite picture of the trip. To me, this just captures what it's like to be at Disney:

Okay, that's it. Now I just have to wait four months till HHI for Spring Break!
