Just got back Friday from our first stay at SSR. The crew includes DW, DD17 and Me as well as our traveling friends and their DS13. Our traveling friends are DVC members too.

Though I am a SSR owner this was out first stay and my impressions are mixed but mostly positive. We stayed in room 1734 in Congress Park. The room had an excellent location, third floor, very close to the bus pick up, quiet pool directly behind our building and a short walk to DTD. Our bus service was excellent except for one long wait for a MK bus, I believe though for the most part bus service is more fortunate timing on your part as to when you arrive at the stop. I also found that having the DTD bus stop avialable to be an added plus, for example our first night we walked over and caught a bus to Boardwalk. I love the night view across the water and did some senior portraits of my DD with the lights of DTD in the background.

My only negative comments about SSR would be that I found the decor to be very nice in our 1 BDR villa but the furniture seemed to be cheap. I think every drawer we used was broken and you had to work to get it to close. There are also was much less storage space in the villa compared to the other villas I've stayed in.

OK, enough of that next post we'll get into the trip itself!

Here are a few photos I did of my DD at SSR:

Great photos of your beautiful daughter! Anxious to read the rest of your report. Thanks for sharing.

We had a thankfully rather uneventful drive from home though we did drive through a very hard rain around Gainesville. We did the online check in for the first time and basically just had to walk in show my photo ID and we were off to find our room.

Once we had everything unpacked we walk to DTD and caught a bus to Boardwalk. I booked a table at Big River Brewery for 7:30 and it was looking iffy if we would make it on time. We decided to “disembark” at the Swolfin and walk over since BW was going to be the last drop.

We walked up to the check in at BRB at precisely 7:30 and were seated inside immediately. I had overheard 45 minute waits for the walkups so I was thankful that I had made an ADR. I had the meatloaf which I thought was very good, DW had chicken quesadillas which she enjoyed and DD had a chicken marinara which she also liked but said it didn’t have a great deal of chicken in it.

We decided after dinner to head to International Gate at Epcot to purchase our AP’s. We all had done the GAD promotion and used them to upgrade the one day ticket to AP’s saving $84.14 PER pass. My savings was over $250!!

Once we got all our passes we walked into Epcot right at 9 pm and walked up and watched Illuminations from the bridge that goes from UK to France and then walked right back out afterwards. We went back to Boardwalk and went to the Screen Door? Shop to purchase a few souvenirs and found several things we were looking for! We caught the DTD bus from the BW stop after about a 10 minute wait.

Couple of photos my DD took at Boardwalk:

NEXT UP: DAY 1 MK

Monday, June 28

Everyone has their theory of what day to go to what park. I am no different. We rarely do early entry days at the theme parks, mainly because we can get to a park with out too much trouble for opening at 9 am, but 8 am is another matter!

I decided to go to MK on Monday because the Extra Evening hours were the night before and early entry was the next day, seemed a logical choice to me. We arrived about 15 minutes before opening and saw the opening festivities.

We headed straight for Splash Mountain got FP and walked right on with no wait in the standby. Big Thunder Mtn had a delayed opening, but by the time we got through riding Splash it was open.

We walked straight on to Big Thunder Mtn and then some of us went back and rode it with no wait again. We decided to head towards Pirates and walk straight on with absolutely no one else in line.

Once off of Pirates I decided that it was high time that we rode Jungle Cruise. We hadn’t been on it since my first very brief visit there in 1991. It was a fifteen minute wait and the longest we’d stand in all day. It was a very enjoyable experience!

Since our traveling friends aren’t big on riding rides I decided to send my DD and their DS back to ride Splash Mtn for a couple of rides with our FP’s.

Next up it was time for another new experience, the ever-popular Dole Whip. I’ve read about them forever, even tried to get one a previous trip but arrived before the stand was open. All I can say is that I have now had one, don’t think I’ll have another. Just didn’t find the pineapple juice and ice cream to be that great of a combination. I really wanted to love it but I didn’t!

We migrated over to Liberty Square went to the Hall of Presidents and enjoyed the very well air-conditioned show. While our traveling friends headed to Main Street, Me, DW, DD and their DS went to ride Haunted Mansion which he had never ridden before.

We headed over to catch the next viewing of Mickey’s Philharmagic which we dearly love.

Since it was nearing 1:15 and we had ADR’s for 2:00 at WCC at the Wildnerness Lodge we headed to the boat taxi to head over.

NEXT UP:

DAY 1 continued:
Extra evening hours at AK!(I know that is not what it is actually called, just sounds better to me!)

We love Philharmigac too. I think we've seen Mrs. Bob and sprout Bob, but we haven't seen Bob yet.

Here I am Rob, looking fat and happy, churro in hand! I'm usually behind the camera. Man I need to lose some lbs!

:goodvibes

Right there with you friend. I probably have a few years on you AND let me tell you the metabolism is not what it used to be. Work harder just to maintain. As much as I wish I was maintaining... it ain't happening. Just cruelty. Churro... mmmmmm :)

Monday continued:

We all ate the skillet for lunch at WCC and it was good. Liked the chicken and sausage better than the ribs. My traveling friend cooks the best ribs I’ve ever eaten and has pretty much made eating other ribs less pleasurable!
When I made ADR’s probably a month or so previous there were very few availabilities but there were quite a few empty tables and they were only using a portion of the dining room.

After lunch we headed to the WL bus stop and took the bus to DHS and the transferred to the SSR bus with very little trouble or wait time. Headed to the quiet pool after a very brief nap and a Bud Light. I go in the pool for a while and played with our friends DS throwing one of those sponge pool balls. The water in the pool was waaaay warm, felt like bath water.

My DW and my friends DW headed over to Wal-Mart while DD, DF, DFDS13 and I headed over to AK for extra evening hours. If you have never been to AK after dark it is worth doing. I did something I had not done since 1999, I DROVE to a theme park. The extra hours were from 7-10 and we weren’t leaving the resort until 7. The car being so close I decided to give it a try. I am a staunch user of WDW transportation so this is a big departure. I just felt for what we were wanting to do the car was the best option.

We arrived around 7:30 and made our way to Expedition Everest. The wait said 20 minutes but there was very few using the single rider line. We walked in and were on the ride within 1 train of each other within five-ten minutes. We then trekked over to Dinosaur and it was a walk on. Rode that jerking ride and then walked around a little. We headed back to Asia and rode kali River Rapids and got very wet!

One more single rider adventure on EE and we headed back to the resort. While on the ride we could see the finale of Illuminations when we were at the peak of the mountain! We were still in the park at 9:25 and back to the resort before 10:00. I knew we were going to be up early the next morning so the car was a good choice!

Sorry didn't take many photos that night.

Day 2 DHS

Right there with you friend. I probably have a few years on you AND let me tell you the metabolism is not what it used to be. Work harder just to maintain. As much as I wish I was maintaining... it ain't happening. Just cruelty. Churro... mmmmmm :)

I do an hour on an elliptical three or four times a week and it just makes me more hungry! I hear you on the metabolism, I remember younger days when all I had to do was think about losing weight and off it'd go. Churros don't help, but it was tasty and I did share it.

Tuesday Day 2

DHS

We arrived at DHS and were in line at the gates at 9. We decided to forego to TSM craziness and headed towards Rock N Rollercoaster and Tower of Terror. Our traveling friends won’t do ToT so went sent them with of passes to get FP for RNR. We had a five or so minute wait at ToT and we were just about to get to the elevator when our friends DS is questioning whether he wants to ride or not. I convince him to ride and later he wants to do it again.

Once we’ve done ToT we head over and our friends are exiting RNR after doing single rider. We all do the single rider and it takes no time to get on. We still had about 20 minutes before our FP time so we strolled around.

Our traveling friends decided twice was enough for them with RNR rides so the other four of us head back to RNR with six FP’s in our hand. When we got to RNR we made a young couple who was about to stand in the 70 minute standby line very happy by handing them two FP that were good immediately. They were quite thankful. So we rode RNR again. We had ridden ToT, RnR twice all within a fairly short time span. I was done with the thrill rides for a little while!

My DW talks my DD into auditioning for American Idol. My DD is an exceptionally gifted singer with classical training. She sang “On My Own” from Les Miserables. My DW went in with her. They judge was quite impressed with her voice but they were looking for more Rock and Roll type singers. He encouraged her to keep pursuing singing which she plans to do in college.

We had an early ADR for Sci-Fi. We had been to Sci-Fi once before but our friends hadn’t been. Everyone enjoyed the experience very much, such a cool atmosphere. I had the cheeseburger which was quite good and we shared onion rings for an appetizer. My daughter had the shrimp pasta which she like and DW had a Rueben that wasn’t that great. She said it would have been better if the bread had been grilled.

We decided to walk around the shops for a little while before heading back to the resort for naps, pool time and shopping at DTD.

NEXT Day Three: Epcot!

I'm sitting here loving your photo's! But more importantly, what a BEAUTIFUL FAMILY you have!

Oh we're not even going to talk about weight when we're in WDW. You look like you're really enjoying yourself and that's all that counts.

I remember you from last year when I posted a picture of the afternoon parade at the MK and you commented on the photo asking what type of camera DH used. Nice to "finally meet you". :thumbsup2 Can't wait to finish the report.

Lovin' your TR. Can't wait for more.

It doesn't look like the crowds were too bad when you were there. We are leaving in 5 days for our first July trip and are getting prepared for the typically large crowds this time of year.

Great job! Can't wait to read more. We will be staying for an extended weekend in October at SSR so this is great!

Day Three: Epcot

Epcot continues to be our favorite park, particularly for DW and me. We arrived at Epcot a few minutes before opening and coming from the buses to bag check (see photo) there were only two people checking bags so the back up was pretty long. This is an awfully busy time of the year for only two people to be manning that post. The line move a little more quickly than I thought it would though.

My friend and I did the speed walk towards Soarin’ to get FPs while the rest of the group headed to Test Track. Once we got the FPs we headed to Test track and walk through the single rider line and got on a car a few minutes before our families got on theirs. Once we all rode we went back through and rode via single rider again. The stand by wait was just 20 minutes but single rider was walk-on.

IMG_0190.jpg

We walked over to Mousegears to enjoy the air conditioning and look around until our fastpass time.

IMG_0186.jpg

We arrived at Soarin’ a couple of minutes after our FP time and headed straight in. Once we went in to pre-flight area I requested that we be able to wait for front row seats and they honored that request. The last time I rode there were a lot of spots on the film that look like dust or debris? which bugged me. That has apparently been rectified because it was flawless this time. I really like this attraction.

We decided it was time for a snack after riding Soarin’ so we went to the Sunshine Food Fair and had some pastries, very good! It is a shame that this counter service isn’t somewhere else on property, it seems to be a great place but we are ALWAYS going to eat at one of the countries when at Epcot.

We went on the Living with the Land attraction after our snak which posted a 20 minute wait which was probably about accurate. We never did anything during our stay that was longer than a twenty minute wait, not that there weren’t longer waits than that, if it were longer we just did fastpass or didn’t do those attractions! I like this attraction as well.

We exited The Land Pavillion and headed to World Showcase. On the way it looked like Captian EO may have had a soft opening but I’m not really sure and didn’t really have an interest in seeing it. Our lunch ADR’s were for 12:30 at Teppan Edo, I had eaten there in 1999 well before the refurb and our friends had never eaten there. We arrived at 12:00 just in time to see the servers and chefs do there welcome which is pretty neat. We were seated at precisely 12:30 which was our reservation time. The only negative thing about the experience is that the exhaust fans above the grills are so loud it is very difficult to communicate with the server, cook and one another.

We split a sushi sampler appetizer which was good. DW isn’t a big sushi fan but liked it none the less. Our cook was very entertaining and knew very little English, just enough to be able to make sure he knew what everyone had ordered! I had shrimp, my wife had chicken and shrimp, DD had chicken and our friends had steak and two of them had swordfish. Everyone really enjoyed the food and it was a great experience. I have been to Japanese restaurants at home and the food is comparable but the atmosphere is much better at Teppan Edo and the place is very clean and fresh looking.

IMG_0248.jpg

We walked through the gift shop at Japan and bought a few souvenirs and sampled some plum wine and sake. I didn’t have any but my wife and friends enjoyed the drinks which were about 25% alcohol, fairly stout! As we walked past the American Adventure the show was about to start so we all headed in. Ten minutes into the show my DW’s head was resting on my shoulder, I guess a full belly and a little wine combined with a dark theater took it’s toll!

Next we stopped at Germany and I bought my friend and me a Spaten beer, very good! It was staring to get quite hot outside, apparently there had been a shower while we had lunch and now the sun was beating down hard. We headed to Norway and go to Maelstrom as a heat diversion. While in line we noticed someone with a t-shirt that had the name of a hometown department store and struck up a conversation and find out that our friends and my DW both knew them.

We ambled our way around World Showcase and my friend stopped for another beer and his DW stopped for a margarita. I stopped at a stand at Mexico for a churro. We checked out a few stores and headed towards the fountain where I gave my camera to a Photopass photographer and she took a group photo of all of us.

IMG_0252.jpg

We made a brief stop at Club Cool for some soft drink samples and to see if we could talk anyone into have some Beverly!

One of the things we had been looking forward to was going to Base 21, a private lounge owned by Siemans at Spaceship Earth. A friend of my DW’s son works there and had sent us a pin code to enter the VIP lounge, unfortunately I didn’t notice that it closed at 4 and it was currently 4:30! (No problem though we were able to make it back the next day and I’ll tell you about that tomorrow!)

IMG_0257.jpg

IMG_0259.jpg

We ride Spaceship Earth, a first for our friends and then headed to the buses back to the resort. Naps ensued, my daughter fixed pasta salad for everyone and then we did the senior portraits of her.

Day three was a great day!!
