First of all, welcome to the DIS!

Second, you might want to ask this question on the Universal resorts board to get more replies.

Third, although I really don't think you can go wrong at any of the Universal hotels, we have stayed only at the Hard Rock with my children who are much younger than yours (they were 2 and 4 that year) and we LOVED it. I will tell you why we chose it: DH and I love music of all kinds, and liked the idea of music playing all around the hotel and pool area. Also, it's the closest walk to the parks -- I mean like 5 miniutes. Third, it was middle priced, with middle sized rooms (out of the 3 onsite Universal hotels). We tend to feel deprived when we go cheapest and too extravagant when we go most expensive, so... We had a standard room, first floor garden view. It was absolutely perfect.

have a great trip!

HRH would probably be the best choice to start off with. It's the "hip" hotel, with music everywhere, and closest to the park being a 5 minute walk. This means the 14 and 11 year old can go off on their own, and stay in touch with cell phones. Then you can take the 4 year old to the kid stuff.
Next up on the list would be the RPR, it's a 7 minute walk, and has a tropical setting.

For either hotel, I suggest arriving the night before and staying in a cheap offsite hotel, then checking in at 7am. Sometimes your room will be ready. If not, then the hotel can hold your luggage while your tour a park using FOTL. In the afternoon, the check in lines can be long, and the HRH has been known to overbook and send people to other hotels. That's why I tell everyone to check in early. The RPR doesn't have this problem.
