I love wind chimes when it's not windy, LOL. Just a little breeze every now and again to make them gently chime is very relaxing. It's when they're constantly banging and clanging uncontrollably that sets my nerves on edge, and unfortunately most people who own wind chimes are completely oblivious to this. I have chimes that I put out in my backyard in the summer, but I made a silencer for it that I can slip on and off. I only take it off when I'm sitting out there and it's not too windy. Otherwise it stays on.
Probably not as oblivious as you may think. Just not an easy way to stop the banging and clanging short of taking it down. I have one in my backyard that is very loud on extremely windy days. But it is also too high to easily take it down during heavy winds.
