Trip Planning help request - NY to FW

I'm planning on a 10-day to 14-day trip next summer, most likely in mid-July. We live in upstate NY and are towing a pop-up with our Mountaineer.

I would like to make frequent overnight stops as we make our way down and back the east coast, either on the coastline at oceanfront campgrounds, or at really nice rv resorts (as close to FW quality as we can reasonably expect). So, something like 2 or 3 nights on the way down, 3 to 4 nights in FT Wildeness and then 2 to 3 nights on our way back.

Tentatively, I would like to stop in Maryland, NC and maybe SC on the way down, and then SC and VA on the way back. I'm thinking about Assateague national park in MD; Newport News or VA Beach in VA; outer banks in NC; Huntington, Edisto or Hunter's Island in SC; and also maybe another FL stop or 2 (Topsail and Ft. DeSoto).

Does anyone have suggestions for a trip of this nature? Any really good campgrounds we should check out? (since we are planning to go in July, we are probably going to need places where we can run AC).

Thanks for your advice and suggestions.

on our trip this july we will go down 81 to front royal va.then across 17 or maybe 64 just to miss nyc and dc. what i did was go to mapquest and see how long between stops then went to good sam for campgrounds. first day 9-10 hours but after that only about 5 hrs each day this way about 4 days to disney. kids gotta swim. went to outer banks last year very nice and down to myrtle beach then came home by pigeon forge tn and back up 81 their are many real nice campgrounds only made res. on trip down winged it on way home that way could stop when and where we wanted. go and enjoy.good luck.

When you drive down I-81 beep and wave as you go by! You'll be coming right through good ole Winchester!

If you go down I-81 be sure to hit Skyline Drive! Beautiful, beautiful, beautiful! Great camping as well!

listen about 1 pm the 29th i'll beep no skiline going down maybe on way home lol.can't wait to much rain here in mass.

oh it's the 30th. maybe will take in the races at winchester speedway fri. night.3 am is the 30th not the 29th. had brain fade lol.

Sounds like a great trip!!!

We are not far from I-81 so we always take 81 to 83 to 95. But if you are thinking of going to Assateague National Park in MD you might want to consider jumping on the Pa Turnpike in Wilkes Barre (I 476), PA and taking that down to 95 to 113 in Delaware and 50 in Maryland. Ocean City is very close to Assateague and might be worth a visit too. We went there last summer and it is very nice. It is neat to see the horses run free on the island and have the beach right there.

We like to camp on the beach too. The best campground we have found is Pirate Land in Myrtle Beach, SC. We loved this place! It has been a few years since we have been there unfortunately.

When we travel if DH is not sure what roads to take, we use: http://www.goodsamclub.com/trip.cfm? It is set up for RV travel. It tells you have long and how many miles you have traveled and what you have left to go. It will give you a true time it will take for towing also.

Hope this helps!!
