Trip Insurance Dilemma

I have a small dilemma...

I was able to secure a 1 bedroom at BCV for May (on temporary hold until my deed is recorded). I had already had a trip to the Polynesian planned for the exact same nights in May. I obviously won't need that reservation anymore. I also had trip insurance with the Polynesian reservation, booked through Dreams.

My agent at Dreams tells me if I cancel the Polynesian I will lose the trip insurance ($70). Although that's not a major catastrophe, I'm wondering why the trip insurance couldn't be just transferred to my new reservation for BCV booked through DVC. Anyone know if this could be done via DVC? I'd hate to lose out on $70 in insurance when I'm going to be at BCV for the exact same nights. Plus I know that DVC will offer me insurance through the same company anyway. As much as I'd love to stay at the Polynesian, it makes no sense to pay for an entire week at what would cost a 1/4 of my total DVC membership.

Any thoughts? Thanks. :)

I don't know all the "ins & outs" of travel insurance, but the benefits of the policies are different for traveling on cash vs. points. If your Polynesian trip were to be canceled for medical reasons, you likely would have received any and all cost of canceling your hotel ressies. You do not receive your actual points back for DVC stays. Maybe the differences in these policies is why the insurance is not transferable.

The insurance you have now is also for a specific reservation. The details of the policy specify that if the trip is cancelled the premium paid is non-refundable. It sounds like you must have reserved a package to get the insurance (as it's not available for room-only ressies).

In this case, you will be making a room-only reservation thru DVC and even though the insurance may be thru the same company, it is a different type of policy. In addition, the Poly reservation was made thru Walt Disney Travel Company and the DVC reservation will be made thru Member Services and you are really asking to have a portion (the insurance) of an existing reservation transferred to a different reservation and that can't be done.

You can certainly ask MS about that, but there is no mechanism to simply transfer a component of a package reservation to a different reservation- thru a different agent- thru a different division.

Good Luck!

Before you purchase anything, you should always read the terms and conditions. If your original trip insurance "policy" does not specifically say that you can do what you are proposing, then you are out of luck.

Sometimes, companies will bend the rules, however, the way the economy is these days, many are sticking to the letter of the contracts - which is nearly always in their favor.

We never bother with trip insurance to DVC. Each to his/her own:D :D :D .....

Ironically, we NEVER get trip insurance either, but ever since 9/11/01 when we were en route to WDW actually and our trip was delayed for several days (we were forced to go back home per the FAA), we now get trip insurance if the trip is over X dollars. (Disney was very helpful during the 9/11 week and let us change all of our plans with no fees, thankfully. This is not something they would normally do though.)

Of course, when we booked this trip several months ago, I didn't even understand what the DVC was about, let alone knew I was going to buy into it in December, lol.

Oh well, live and learn! :)
