Trip from Hell. thats us...

Thanks for the heads up! My DD is older but we are going with my rather rambuctious DN whos six. I'll have to check this out upon check in. I don't want her getting hurt on vacation.

Were those Red Velvet Ants? Very Large and fuzzy? That's a nightmare I wouldn't be happy either and we are heading there in a month. They'll be moving me all over the place if I see bugs!

Those Palmetto Bug/ Huge Roaches are nasty my DD held one in her hand one time on vacation in Virginia Beach. I freaked out. She was 2 and I think she thought it was a toy. Yikes I'm wiggin now!

We are going to BCV (9/28-10/4), should we take one of those cans of bug spray that you can set off yourself and leave for a few hours. Our kids 6 & 3 will be sleeping on the sleeper sofa, my 3 y/o gets bad reaction to bug bites. I don't need this kind of problem. I wish now we'd gone w/ BWV but loved SAB for kids.

No I wouldn't fumigate with the kids coming back into an area sooner than 48 full hours, Think of it this way, there are lots of posts regarding this not being an issue. The odds are overwhlemingly in your favor that you won't be one of us! Go enjoy, and don't hesitate to call if you have a problem.

I was reading this thread and watching CNN-they said that a 3 month old girl died in Arizona after being bitten by ants.

I really think they do need to do something.

It sounds like they need to do something to the entire building rather than one unit at a time when there is a problem. Don't the ants just go to another unit when the other is sprayed?

We are having a problem with big black ants up here in MI right now and they are very hard to get rid of no matter how much you clean.

I wouldn't spray any type of fogger in a hotel room because you do have to be out of there for quite a few hours and it really is Disney's responsability to correct the problem.

Have there been problem with ants at other DVC properties? This will be our 1st trip to DVC prop. but have stayed @ ASMu, Dixie Landing & AKL and never had problems with any bugs whatsoever. It seem as though the sofa seems to be the spot for them. Here's my theory, after a long day at the parks, the kids get comfy on the sofa, watching TV and eating cookies or some of those big colorful lollipops, it falls down between the cushions and in come those pesky ants ( I'm sure my kids will do their part, too). Do they leave vaccums in the rooms? I feel that this is housekeepings responsibility to clean behind & under those things, but I realize most sleeper sofas weigh about 3 tons, so I don't know the solution, just voicing my thoughts.

Fireants are a problem as are ants in general. The problem with fire ants in the venom and he fact that some can get life threatening allergic reactions or in some cases, enough venom to directly cause a problem. I'm sure WDW fights this issue all the time but the makeup and usage of DVC makes them the more likely targets due to the design of some (OKW) and the food preparation. I just heard last week that Germany made it illegal to kill ants, I guess I'd go to jail.

As for the bench, I doubt is was defective. Likely made that way for cleaning purposes.

Germany made it illegal to kill ants

I guess I would be going to jail! We get an invasion of little black ants at our house every year with the spring thunderstorms. I can't begin to imagine how exactly that would be enforced!

I was told by the beach club manager, after he had confirmed with housekeeping, That and I quote him here, That in fact both benches were broken, and that those cushions should never come off.

I read that and I believe he told you that. I just don't believe it's accurate. When I'm down, I'll have to look at the bench more closely.

I had an allergic reaction to red ant bites about a year ago. We will be going to BCV in a few weeks and am a bit concerned!!! has anyone else experienced a problem with red ants at BCV?

You did the right thing to complain to management and send a letter. I can't believe all of the issues you had. Please keep us posted if you hear back from anyone at DVC. Annmarie

I am with all of you who do not expect to see Palmetto bugs or roaches or whatever they are in my Disney room. Sorry. That's what bug spray is for and I expect that it's been used! I'm itchy all over thinking about your experience!

We were at the BVC in March and stayed in a 2 bedroom Villa - Room 541. The room was great and we had NO problems whatsoever during our trip. We LOVED our new home at the BCV!! However, I did notice that the bench was broken. The cushion literally came right off. I noticed this while I was cleaning and wasn't too sure if they did that on purpose or not. We have a 2 year old and he spent alot of time coloring at this table. Thank goodness nothing happened..

Sorry to hear about your trip Twinsmomplus2!

HeatherAnne

So We are now up to 5 units affected. in roughly the same time period. Can You report that unit being broken as well. Thanks. Lauren
