So the last 4 times I've traveled, I've booked my own flight directly with the carrier. However we decided today we're going to Disney in June. I went on Travelocity just to ballpark pricing. They are offering Nonstop on Jetblue for my dates at a total of $597 Roundtrip for 3 of us. I go to Jetblue and they don't even have these dates open yet. I'm wondering of Travelocity uses a flight predictor or if they have knowledge of what the airlines are going to open up. Either way the price is great for 3 rt.

Going through a middleman such as Travelocity often becomes a hassle if you need or want to change something, even when working around a schedule change by the airline. At the very best it needs more legwork by the agent and since they are not getting paid more, they sometimes beat around the bush rather than act quickly on your request with new hand picked flights in mind.

One other thing that happens is that the middleman has old data in its computer and when you try to book, it says "not available" at the very end, after you laboriously plugged in all your info. Anecdotal evidence has it that this happens a lot when the airline's or hotel's or car rental firm's own site shows no availablility, even though some middlemen actually have a stash of seats or rooms or cars they can sell even when things are sold out to the rest of the public.

I would advocate waiting for the airline to do its IPO and book directly with it.

Exactly. In my experience, it's better to book directly with the airline.
