Travelling in Winter

We typically book our trips in Fall or Spring so that we don't have to worry about snow changing plans but this year it looks like December or February are going to be the easiest months for our schedule for vacation (from Halifax to Orlando). I'm wondering what happens in the event that bad weather/snow cancels a flight. Looking to hear about your experiences. Was it easy to change flights? Did you loose a lot of time from your vacation? Did you loose Disney days/tickets that you had purchased? Did insurance help at all? Thanks!

We either just catch the next one, or decide to drive down instead (beat the storm by a day last time).

When I travel in winter I am very conscious about booking direct flights and using larger airlines that have multiple flights to my destination in a day (where possible of course). It gives you more options in case your flight is impacted by winter weather.

My daughter had a mid-January trip last year that was severely impacted. On check-out day, her flight (and all other airlines) was cancelled. She ended up staying in a hotel by the airport and then renting a car the next day to drive to PA, whereupon she was able to get a flight to Detroit. AND, she got the last rental car on the lot. It swore the whole family off from ever traveling during that time again.

I’ve had over thirty flight to Florida in the winter months and never a cancelled flight, but many delayed (2-3 hours) flights. If I had a flight cancelled I would immediately book a hotel area hotel and then look at flight options.

Stratford. Was just there.
Same, we just go and deal with it. Have been lucky but we book usually just a week or two out at the most.

I regularly travel between October and March. I have had issues here and there with delays and deicing. But in general, the airlines factor that into the gate-to-gate time they report to you when booking. Nothing that makes me not want to travel during our winter. I have also been lucky to miss major snowstorms by a day or two either way.

I think it depends on where you are flying out from.

I leave out of Halifax and all of our trips have been end of Nov and early Feb with zero issues.
