I will be visiting Disney this July and staying at the Contemporary. My mother is a diabetic and takes insulin two times a day. Normally when traveling she carries all her needles used during the trip back with her to dispose of properly at home. I read on one of the web sites that the resort will supply a syringe disposal container if requested. Is this true and if so who would I speak with to request this service.

Guest services or the CM at the front desk when you check in.

If you want/need any more suggestions for traveling with an insulin-dependent diabetic, consider posting on the DisAbilities Forum. There are several posters there with tons of recent experience who are great about helping others.

Best wishes from another diabetic (but not yet on insulin).

Just a note: A friend of mine has two children that are diabetics. she said that since it is necessary for them to have to have refrigerated insulin, they get the refrigerator for free for the week. Didn't know if you knew this or not. Hope this helps.

This used to be the case. however due to a lot of abuse, it no longer is.

Sometimes they don't charge for medical reasons, but that's not guaranteed. So if you need it, get it, and plan on paying for it. If they do'nt charge you, you have more money to spend on souvies!

"since it is necessary for them to have to have refrigerated insulin"

The bottom line is that insulin doesn't really need to be refrigerated! You do need to protect it from extremes in temperature(ie, 100 degrees in the park unprotected!!). In your hotel room its quite safe to leave it at room temperature. You'll find most insulins in hospitals on the medication carts unrefrigerated!

The only time I refrigerate mine is when I bring it home from the pharmacy until I open it up and that is mostly because i will lose it if I don't put it in the fridge!!! I haven't refrigerated mine in 20 years. I usually ask for the refrigerator anyway and put the extra bottles in the fridge for safety - we ended up back in a room that was 115 degrees (or thereabouts - seriously!!!) in D.C. once. The maid had shut the a/c off (DUH!!) and it was 107 outside and we were on the side with the setting sun and they opened the drapes up!!! (Can you say stupid maid?) So that is my only basis - that would be an extreme heat. I also keep my juice in there for something to drink if my blood sugar gets low - if I am too loopy and someone tries to feed me warm juice I get really bXXchy!!!
