My brief history: I recently found out I am allergic to Soy. Something I wasn't expecting as an adult. I have had a couple of months to research and learn about this, but I still end up with a reaction once a week due to hidden ingrediants that were most likely processed with soy. (thankfully I do not have anaphylaxis) I have read that many soy allergy sufferers can handle soybean oil. I haven't tried it yet to know how I will react if at all.

My question is how was it navigating in Disney? I have found many restaurants by me use soybean oil on everything b/c it is cheap. Has anyone dealt with this allergy? Do the counter services use soybean oil?

I emailed Disney special diets and was given generic allergy information and told to email back 2 weeks before my trip. That doesn't do me any good with ADRs or planning.
I appreciate any thoughts, suggestions and advice on this matter.
Thank you!!!!

To my knowledge, the oil for the allergy fryers is primarily canola oil. Sci-Fi dinein is one example using soy oil in their fryers and soy oil spray on their grills. I will say that my friend who is also allergic to soy wasn't able to have have much there, and he gambled with the burger on the grill (which the chef strongly encouraged him not to do) and I'm not sure that it didn't make him sick. Personally, I wouldn't have chanced it. Unfortunately, without the allergy reference sheets being given out by Special Diets anymore, it is harder to find out what places do have soy oil, but I will say that I'm pretty sure that the majority of them use canola oil.

Hope that helps!

Welcome to world of adult onset allergies. It's not always fun bit we do learn to live with them. Soy is a difficult allergy to avoid I'll give you that. You may want to find out if you can have soy lecithin or oils. Some people with soy allergies can have those and that will open up some options.

As you learn more about sources of hidden allergens, you realize what is more likely to be safe. I wish I could give you more advice there but soy isn't one of my allergies. I have had CMs offer to bake fries for me to avoid cross-contamination in the oil. I can't eat the fries at all anymore, but they did taste good baked when I could still eat them.

Check out the menus to see what you might like at each TS you make ressies at. Note your allergy when you make the ressie. Disney really is good with allergies. The CMs go above and beyond for allergies. You'll have a great trip. :)

Thank you for that information on the fryers. I will keep that tid bit on Sci Fi in my notes as well. :thumbsup2

Soy Lecithin is definately a problem for me as that was one of the triggers to my first reaction. I haven't tried soy oil since my diagnosis... I do like the idea of baked fries. Thank you for your input as well. I know Disney is very good about handling food allergies... It's just a new experience for me and the unknown is a little unnerving....
Have a magical day everyone!!!! pixiedust:

My friend is soy free, and I know they are really diligent about asking about soy lecithin whenever the chef talks to him. I've been with him quite a bit, and almost all of the chefs have asked that.

Good luck on your trip. :)
