Travel insurance on package questions?

Not really sure where to post this, so I figured I'd start here. I called Disney a few days ago to book my package for May. (actually switched a room only to a package) I added the dining plan and tickets and ended up adding the trip insurance. I was told I could change my mind within 14 days. Should I leave it on, does anyone not get it? Also if I decide to change resorts (which I probably will) does this get affected at all?

I only ask b/c my sister had a trip in Sept. and had to change the dates and ended up having to pay for the insurance again. I believe she was only a couple weeks away from her trip though.

Sorry for all the questions, just don't want to waste money.

They now always ask you if you want trip insurance. they used to (a few years ago) automatically include it.

We always get it. It has actually paid for itself over the years.

one year DW got very ill after a ohana dinner. The trip insurance paid for a room visit from a doctor and some prescription meds (above the co-pay from our health insurance)

another year we got 'stuck" at WDW when a hurricane hit. we had to stay over two days before we could get our flight out (darn!) and went to the parks. The insurance paid for the extra days of our room, and food.

(we had to put in a claim after we returned home) we got a check within a couple of weeks.

well worth it, as we usually go during september (Hurricane season!)

You might look into what it would cost to buy travel insurance on your own first. On the cruises we have done it has been much cheaper to buy our own insurance than to use what is offered by the company.

Try insuremytrip.com-- they compare different prices to show you what you can get. But I think you do want to do quickly after booking or it doesn't cover some things like preexisting conditions.

We haven't used the insurance for WDW because we have health insurance that will cover any doctor/hospital needs there and are able to absorb any other costs if something happens like Grumpy Pirate explained. But for our cruises we aren't covered by our insurance if we have to be airlifted off the ship, or get medical help in another country, and delays or issues can be extremely costly when you are out of the country.

But if I were going to WDW during hurricane season, or had some preexisting condition that I thought could cause problems I would probably get insurance to be on the safe side. One less thing to worry about!

We have never purchased insurance. Changes to dates and resorts and that kind of thing don't incur a fee unless it is within 45 days of your trip.
