Transportation of Dress from UK help

Right virgin have said the following measurements

56 x 36 x 23 cm and can't weigh no more than 6kg (13 lbs)

So that would mean the box is fine. Just as long as you don't have a heavy dress. I'm going to call the dress shop tomorrow to see if they will be able to use this box and how heavy my dress is.

I would much rather use the box than a suitcase so the dress is with me at all times.

I ve emailed the bridal boutique i ve brought my Ian Stuart dress from to ask if they know weight info. Have also asked their opinion to see if they think my dress will fit in the Maxi box.

Fingers crossed they ll think it ll be fine to use & that my dress does nt weigh too much:thumbsup2

The thought of putting my dress in to a case to go in the hold makes me freak out a tad  :headache:

Hurrah!

Just got to measure the dress and weigh it now then - that'll be fun!

Start practicing on crying on command.
This might come in handy, whether it's at check in or security or whatever.

And good luck!!!

I ll probably be a bag of nerves going out for both our planning session & our wedding so crying will be likely to occur frequently:laughing: .

I think if we run in to any problems i ll cry, if we dont i ll cry, getting on the plane i ll cry & so on...... :rotfl:

No problems there, i think for me it ll be a case of learning how to stop crying rather than crying on command:thumbsup2 .

My makeup on the way out theres gonna take a battering  , a big no no for someone who cant live without makeup :worried:

I'm shipping mine over to Carolyn Allen's. I can't risk the stress of sitting in the plane wondering if my dress is:

:confused3 actually on the plane
:confused3 getting whacked around

The Bridal Salon are packing and weighing it for me, and then Fedex or UPS will be shipping it as fast as humanly possible to Florida. My dress is just huge ~ I can't imagine it being packed for hand luggage :(

i was going to ship it but i didnt want to get stung for the customs charges on the way back. I must admit though i would never pack it in the hold. I'm not letting it out of my sight!

Custom charges are a major concern to me too. I ve brought things off ebay before that have nt been of much value & have had to pay more in custom fess than what i paid for the item.

My dress is really big too though so am very unsure if it ll fit in to the maxi box

I'll bring it back in a case I think, but getting over there is a different kettle of fish for me. :)

i think most dress shops will be able to get any dress in the box, they are the ones who know how to pack them etc so i wouldnt worry about it

Im picking up my dress a month before we fly out though so i cant leave my dress in the box for that long. Id want to pack it in the box the day before we leave to stay at Gatwick. In the time inbetween im gonna have it hanging up at my parents house

My dress is also quite heavy especially the train. It's a shame we can't just take it folded in half in a dress bag. That way it would be less creased. Years ago they would have hung it up for us in their cupboard but not now with all the other regulations.

I might have to get a box and sit on it to get my dress in.

Orangetigg: your have to let us know how you get on going through check in and security with the box.

Thanks for the weblink :thumbsup2

I wish i could use a dress bag too, it would make life so much simpler but i also get why they have all of the extra regulations so i cant blame airlines for being extra cautious with regard to peoples safety:thumbsup2

Im frightened that i ll be so adament to fit my dress in the box that i ll do damage to my dress. Its not something id like to have to do myself, to fold my dress up & crease it myself will be something i wont enjoy. Then again knowing i can carry it on to the plane gives me a lot more peace of mind. Just will need a good steam in the bathroom afterwards

Does anyone know the art of dress folding to get it in a box?

My bridal shop is 2 hours away, so now the dress is done we've brought it home, so will have to figures out how to pack it ourselves.

I'll have to get it out on the bed and try folding it to see if it would fit in the maxi box before I go ahead and buy one...

If you buy a box from the empty box company, they send a printed sheet with instructions on how to fit the dress in. The skirt on my dress had no train, but was very full with plenty of netting underneath and I managed to fit it into the biggest of the travel sized boxes. From what I remember, you line the box with a couple of layers of acid free tissue paper, and then start by putting the bottom of the skirt in the box first laying it so that the length of the dress goes along the length of the box. You just keep folding the dress back on itself, placing tissue between each fold, until the dress fits in.

A word of warning...Despite what it says on the website, the box doesn't fit in the overhead lockers... certainly not in PE on Virgin flights anyhow. It wasn't a problem at all though.. The cabin crew stored my dress box, and another large holdall with shoes, accessories etc for me in their wardrobe at the back of the cabin

I have just been told that my dress won't fit in the biggest box. Back to the suitcase plan :confused3

Where do you get tissue from?
I'll have to do a mock folding to see if it's worth buying the box.

However....

.... if the box doesn't fit overhead, and we don't get a nice cabin crew like you did and we're in economy so perhaps they have less space - then what happens??
Presumably we'd get through taking it as hand luggage, as the measurements fit the specification, but if it actually doesn't fit, then what?

Or am I stressing over nothing, if you're told it fits before you get on board they have to find somewhere for it, right?

But then do you have to wait until everyone gets off the plane to get it back, and then end up being stuck in the ID queue at MCO??

What is your dress like?
Mine's pretty big too, I'm wondering whether it's just going to be easier to go with the suitcase option after all.....

Was you told that by the bridal shop?? Can you post a pic of your dress so i can get an idea if i ll have the same problem. Im very doubtful the plan of using the maxi box will work for me, i hope im wrong though.

Im still waiting to hear back from my bridal boutique. Am living in hope they say "no problem".
Fingers Crossed ;)

meryll83:

I think you panic just as much as i do as before i read your last post i was thinking the exact same points  . We re flying out PE but if someones already said it wont fit in the overhead lockers & we get uptight cabin crew then what would we do?? Thats so silly that it fits the required measurements but yet does nt fit in the over head lockers. Makes no sense :confused3
