From the DVC FAQ section of this site:

"Many ask if DVC will change the point requirement for a stay at a DVC resort. While the total number of points sold at the resort is a fixed number and cannot be changed, point needs for stays can be changed. However, if points needed for some nights (or room types) are raised, other nights (or room types) must be lowered, as the total points required to stay at the resort for the year cannot be changed. This has occurred only once, in 1996 at OKW, and is likely to happen only if necessary to keep resort utilization in balance for the benefit of DVC members. At that time some nights were raised a few points, some were lowered a few points and most were not changed at all."

Can someone please explain this to me?

Also, when I use the points calculator on this site, it won't let me look beyond 2005. Does that mean, for example, that it will always take 387 points to stay in a savannah view room at AKL from Dec. 24-Dec. 31, so there's no need to look up point values for future years?

Thanks for your help! I try to understand this, but it's so confusing!

Ok, the way I understand it is this.............

It all depends on when Major Holidays like Easter and Christmas fall. When those points go up say when Easter is in March then April's points go down but when Easter ends up in April then March's points go down.

Clear as Mud?!?

As for staying at AKL, I'm sure the points will definately go up year to year. As staying on property for other than DVC is not point effective, I have not looked at the points required but on the Member Site the information is available.

The total points owned at DVC resorts is fixed and cannot be changed (by FL timeshare law). If DVC ever finds the need to change any point requirements, it may do so only by keeping the total points needed for the entire year in balance. If some nights are raised, others MUST be lowered to accomplish this. The variance can come from weekend nights, weekday nights or from various seasons or villa types.

In 1996, OKW had some readjustment of points- in general the Adventure Season points for weekdays were raised a little and some of the weekend point needs were lowered to keep everything in balance. No changes have occurred since. I don't expect any future changes, but it is always a possibility if reservation habits of members should indicate the need. (It will not be because of a vote of the members though.) Here is a listing of the original point requirements from 1991 - 1995 and the current point chart for OKW. The actual dates for Easter and Thanksgiving do change each year- thus affecting the actual dates for those seasons, but the overall effect is still the same.

Instead of the calculator, try using the DVC Point Charts at the top of the page. The charts thru 2007 are available there.

In addition, you can go to www.caskbill.com and download his free DVC Planner which has a point calculator for all present resorts thru 2054.

Enjoy!

Thank you! I think I get it now... :)

The sites WebmasterDoc posted links for are helpful; I noticed, however, that they work just to calculate points for the 7 DVC sites, not non-DVC properties like Contemporary, AKL, etc., right? Are there any to help with that other than the point calculator?

We must be strange creatures; our first trip home will be to the Contemporary, and our second will be to AKL! Oh well - we want to see them all!

Thanks again!

That information is available on the DVC Member site.

In addition, please realize that there is no guarantee or protection regarding changes in the points needed for the Disney Collection/Concierge Collection/Adventure Collection programs. Those are negotiated each year and have usually gone up , but there have been a few instances when there were downward adjustments though.

Yep its ONLY the DVC resorts that can't change in the overall points. NON DVC resorts like Poly, GF, Cont and AKL can and do change.

From 05 - 06 most stays went up anywhere from 1-3 points a night, depending on location and view. One even went up 4. I think this was one of the concierge levels of the deluxes.

Basically it means that if they make a Friday night in a studio at OKW cost 12 points instead of 10 (these figures are comepltely made up), then another night at an OKW studio has to cost 8 points instead of 10.
