Transferring points?

So this might be a confusing question/scenario, but hoping someone can shed some light.

We have already rented points from a DVC member for a VGF 1bdrm stay week after thanksgiving. Now, after just returning from a trip to BLT 2 bdrm (rack rate), we are much more seriously considering buying (resale) DVC.

IF we were to buy DVC and close in the next few months, is there any way to transfer some of our newly obtained points to the owner who we rented points from to get a larger villa (if available)?

That is the most popular week for DVC members. There probably wouldn't be any availability by the time you closed and were able to transfer the points you needed to the member. You have to figure about 60-90 days after you get an agreement with the owner and go to ROFR for Disney's approval.

It is possible if the other owner were willing but probably not a good idea. By mentioning resale, I assume you mean buying a resort other than VGF. The points you would buy would thus not be for the same resort as the rented points, where the owner has VGF points. Your points could not be mixed with the VGF points to make a reservation at any one resort until 7 months out. Here is the rub. The time of year you want, the week after Thanksgiving, includes time in early Dec, DVC's highest demand time of the year. If you could find anything open for a week at a near park resort at 7 months out (late April) for early Dec, it would be a miracle to begin with. But if something were actually available, the odds are that between the the time you see it open and the time the transfer of points is complete, the first reservation is cancelled, and the other owner then goes to make the new reservation, there is high risk the opening you saw will already be gone, with the result that the other owner would have your rental payment plus your transferred points and you would have no reservation.

Note, what you want to do could possibly be done with far less risk if you wanted SSR and maybe OKW or AKV savanna or standard view, which have a higher chance of being open at 7 months out for that time of year. An alternative to transfer would be to have the original owner reserve some of the nights you want at one of those resorts, then you reserve the rest and then have MS link the reservations. You might have to transfer some points in that situation just to make sure the other owner uses all the points you rented (e.g., because of point differences, the other owner may have a few of the rented left over after reserving certain nights in the new reservation and thus a transfer may be needed to allow him to use those points with yours for one of the nights you want).

Probably not. A member is only allowed to transfer point once in a use year. You would need to find out if they have already done a transfer of points for their current use year.
